Makara Journal of Technology

Drift forces caused by sea waves and currents are an important aspect that needs to be studied in planning moored floating structures, especially Floating Production Units (FPU) type ships which are operated for oil and gas exploration. This study describes the drift forces on the FPU which is subjected to environmental loads in the form of waves. The slow-drift movement that occurs in a moored FPU, and experiencing irregular waves is a very important problem. The complexity of determining drift forces analytically and numerically requires the use of hydrodynamics model test. In the model test on a certain model scale …

The Effect Of Parameters In Cryogenic Treatment On Mechanical Properties Of Tool Steel: A Review, Ronaldus Caesariano Ekaputra, Myrna Ariati Mochtar

Journal of Materials Exploration and Findings

Tool steel is classified as special alloy steel which proposed as dies or mold materials as their high mechanical properties and dimensional stability. In order to improve tool steel’s mechanical properties, heat treatment process, especially, cryogenic treatment is conducted. Cryogenic treatment is done by exposing tool steel material at sub-zero liquid/gas media after heated at austenite temperature. This process significantly affects the martensite phase transformation increase and avoids retained austenite emersion. In particular, the higher martensite volume fraction, the higher hardness and wear resistance value of tool steel. It had been proven that adjusting critical process parameters of cryogenic treatment …

Pipeline Risk Analysis Optimization With Monte Carlo Method Using Gamma Distribution, Farhan Rama Digita, Jaka Fajar Fatriansyah, Abdul Rahim Ridzuan, Hanna Ovelia, Imam Abdillah Mas'ud, Irma Hartia Tihara, Baiq Diffa Pakarti Linuwih

Journal of Materials Exploration and Findings

The inspection process of piping components in the oil and gas industry is one of the most crucial things, given the high risk posed by pipeline system failures, which have a huge impact on losses, both from environmental and financial aspects. Risk-based inspection with the Monte Carlo method is one of the efforts that can be made to minimize failures in piping systems, by involving data distribution to calculate the probability of component failure. Although the normal distribution is commonly used for generating random variables, its use in corrosion rate calculation can lead to overestimation due to negative corrosion rate …

Heat Transfer Enhancement In Nanofluid Flows Augmented By Magnetic Flux, Kozhikkatil Sunil Arjun, Rakesh Kumar

Makara Journal of Technology

Heat transfer enhancement could be realized using magnetohydrodynamics together with nanofluids specifically in flow micro-convection in a microtube, flow past a vertical porous plate, and square duct flow with discrete heat sources numerically. A critical value for the Rayleigh number, a maximum value for the magnetic field strength, a low Reynolds number, and volume concentrations exists for thermal enhancement to simulate nanofluid flow in a microtube. Heat transfer enhancement is observed with a reduction in the magnetic field strength in a flow past a heated porous vertical plate. Alumina nanofluid subjected to Hartmann number 10 can boost 81% enhancement in …

Makara Journal of Technology

The study explores axisymmetric endwall contouring with emphasis on the design of novel endwalls capable of heat load reduction. Optimizations with parameterization numerically determined by the endwall of flat shape led to the endwall of the contoured shape with substantial depletion of heat transfer in the passage of the vane. Heat transfer attributes for the generated contoured endwalls were analyzed for the exit Reynolds number of 2 × 106 . Endwall three-dimensional contouring resulted in remarkable changes in secondary flow vortices, jet-to-secondary flow interaction, and film cooling effectiveness on the flat endwall. The results pointed out that the axisymmetric convergent …

Journal of Materials Exploration and Findings

The application of WPC is not only limited to indoor applications but has been extended to exterior applications where properties of WPC could compromise during service life. WPC was derived from wood fiber of various sizes to reinforce polymers. Wood fiber has the advantage of a cheaper price, being abundantly available, and ease of processing, however, the critical factor is its hydrophilic nature, where moisture absorption is likely to occur. Thus, treatments for reducing the hydrophilicity of wood fibers are applied. By treatment of wood fiber, the surface impurities were removed, leaving the roughened surface of fibers, thus providing a …

Multi-Mode Total Focusing Method (Mtfm) To Detect High-Temperature Hydrogen Attack (Htha) – A Review, Anjar Oktikawati, Rini Riastuti, Nursidi Yuanto

Journal of Materials Exploration and Findings

High temperature hydrogen attack (HTHA) is a commonly observed harm component in carbon steels exposed to high temperature and pressure in a hydrogen-rich environment. Hydrogen together with carbon responds to produce methane. The formation of methane bubbles in steel can lead to loss of fracture toughness and lead to intergranular cracking. The main challenge of this problem lies in early warning systems that can detect these bubble clusters before they reach the advanced stage. Several advanced ultrasonic inspections have been developed over the years due to the challenges of inspecting materials for defects and discontinuities. These cover time-of-flight diffraction (ToFD), …

Freespan Analysis For Subsea Pipeline Integrity Management Strategy, Nurul Hadi, Muhammad Helmi, Edo Cathaputra, Dedi Priadi, Donanta Dhaneswara Jan 2023

Freespan Analysis For Subsea Pipeline Integrity Management Strategy, Nurul Hadi, Muhammad Helmi, Edo Cathaputra, Dedi Priadi, Donanta Dhaneswara

Journal of Materials Exploration and Findings

Abstract. Over a rough seabed or on seabed subject to scour, freespans can occur when contact between a subsea pipeline and the seabed is lost over an acceptable distance. When this exceeds the allowable freespan length, design stresses can be exceeded, and a vortex induced vibration (VIV) response can be initiated, resulting in the risk of fatigue failure. If this is not predicted and controlled properly, it will affect pipeline integrity, leading to expensive rectification and intervention work. Freespan analysis consisted primarily of a screening check in which the as-found freespans from Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) or multibeam Side …
