Hemiarthroplasty, where one side of a joint is replaced, is a minimally invasive procedure. It allows for the preservation of native tissue, though a significant ramification is accelerated cartilage wear when articulating with high stiffness materials that do not mimic the mechanical stiffness of the native tissue. An implant that employs a lattice design can significantly lower the stiffness of a solid structure whilst maintaining strength. Knee Osteoarthritis (KOA) is a degenerative joint disease and a leading cause of disability worldwide. Lower limb malalignment was a risky factor leading to KOA, altering the load distributions. This study aimed to study the influence of knee deformities on knee contact mechanics and knee kinematics during squatting. A full-leg squat FE model was developed based on general open-source models and validated with in vivo studies to investigate the outputs under frontal malalignment (valgus 8° to varus 8°) and axial malalignment (miserable malalignment 30°). One of the main drawbacks of hemiarthroplasty is that it involves the articulation of a foreign material against the native cartilage, and hence the native cartilage experiences accelerated wear. It is hypothesized that lowering the stiffness of hemiarthroplasty implants will decrease contact pressure and increase contact area, thus decrease wear. Lowering the stiffness was done using finite element analysis to lower the stiffness of the implant materials, and then to change the internal structure of the implants to increase their compliance. Scapular notching is a common complication of reverse total shoulder arthroplasty (RTSA) wherein the predominant focus of current literature has been on changes in osseous anatomy. However, the implications on RTSA performance from the damaged humeral cup is largely unknown. Therefore the present work describes the effects of the initiation and propagation of the humeral cup defect resulting from scapular notching through the use of finite element modeling and wear simulation, in order to assess changes in RTSA contact mechanics and tribological properties.
