Poor outcomes of peripheral arterial disease stenting are often attributed to the inability of stents to accommodate the complex biomechanics of the flexed lower limb. Abrasion damage caused by rubbing of the stent against the artery wall during limb movement plays a significant role in reconstruction failure but has not been characterized. Our goals were to develop a method of assessing the abrasiveness of peripheral nitinol stents and apply it to several commercial devices. Misago, AbsolutePro, Innova, Zilver, SmartControl, SmartFlex, and Supera stents were deployed inside electrospun nanofibrillar tubes with femoropopliteal artery-mimicking mechanical properties and subjected to cyclic axial compression …

Pulsed Laser Cutting Of Magnesium-Calcium For Biodegradable Stents, M. P. Sealy, Y. B. Guo, J. F. Liu, C. Li Jan 2016

Pulsed Laser Cutting Of Magnesium-Calcium For Biodegradable Stents, M. P. Sealy, Y. B. Guo, J. F. Liu, C. Li

There is growing interests in the use of biodegradable magnesium implants for cardiovascular and pulmonary applications such as stents. Magnesium is a metal that has the ability to gradually dissolve and absorb into the human body after implantation. There is very little work discussing the relationship between process parameters and cut quality of magnesium stents by laser cutting. The objective of this research is to determine the effect of laser cutting conditions including peak laser power and cutting speed of a millisecond range pulsed laser on kerf geometry, surface topography, surface roughness, and microstructure. An assessment on the experimental work …

Clinical trials have reported different restenosis rates for various stent designs . It is speculated that stentinduced strain concentrations on the arterial wall lead to tissue injury, which initiates restenosis . This hypothesis needs further investigations including better quantifications of non-uniform strain distribution on the artery following stent implantation. A non-contact surface strain measurement method for the stented artery is presented in this work. ARAMIS stereo optical surface strain measurement system uses two optical high speed cameras to capture the motion of each reference point, and resolve three dimensional strains over the deforming surface. As a mesh stent is deployed …

Two commercially available stents (the Palmaz–Schatz (PS) and S670 stents) with reported high and low restenosis rates, respectively, have been investigated in this paper. Finite element models simulating the stent, plaque, and artery interactions in 3 mm stenosed right coronary arteries were developed. These models were used to determine the stress field in artery walls after stent implantation. The material properties of porcine arteries were measured and implemented in the numerical models. The stress concentration induced in the artery by the PS stent was found to be more than double that of the S670 stent. It demonstrated a good correlation …
