Development Of Rear-End Collision Avoidance In Automobiles, Uttamkumar Dravidam Dec 1999

Development Of Rear-End Collision Avoidance In Automobiles, Uttamkumar Dravidam

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The goal of this work is to develop a Rear-End Collision Avoidance System for automobiles. In order to develop the Rear-end Collision Avoidance System, it is stated that the most important difference from the old practice is the fact that new design approach attempts to completely avoid collision instead of minimizing the damage by over-designing cars. Rear-end collisions are the third highest cause of multiple vehicle fatalities in the U.S. Their cause seems to be a result of poor driver awareness and communication. For example, car brake lights illuminate exactly the same whether the car is slowing, stopping or the …

Development Of A Near-Perfect Lens Surface Generation Advisor (Nplsga), Victor De Rossi Nov 1999

Development Of A Near-Perfect Lens Surface Generation Advisor (Nplsga), Victor De Rossi

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The Near-Perfect Lens Surface Generation Advisor is a software program designed to optimize manufacturing conditions of acrylic lenses. The program numerically minimizes the total manufacturing cost of machining and hand polishing by choosing the optimal feed rate, tool diameter and step size. Derivations of mathematical equations plus neural networks estimations were used to calculate the total cost as a function of these given variables. Machining time was found from values obtained from feed rate and tool displacement. Polishing time was estimated based on the scallop height, and the total polished surface area. Scallop height was calculated from geometrical expressions depending …

Tool Cutting Force Modeling And Wear Estimation Of Micro-End-Milling Operations, Wei-Yu Bao Mar 1999

Tool Cutting Force Modeling And Wear Estimation Of Micro-End-Milling Operations, Wei-Yu Bao

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The applications of micro-end-milling operations have increased recently. A Micro-End-Milling Operation Guide and Research Tool (MOGART) package has been developed for the study and monitoring of micro-end-milling operations. It includes an analytical cutting force model, neural network based data mapping and forecasting processes, and genetic algorithms based optimization routines. MOGART uses neural networks to estimate tool machinability and forecast tool wear from the experimental cutting force data, and genetic algorithms with the analytical model to monitor tool wear, breakage, run-out, cutting conditions from the cutting force profiles.

The performance of MOGART has been tested on the experimental data of over …

Analysis Of Dual-Gripper Manipulators And Finite Element Analysis Of The Flexible Laminated Hose For Underground Storage Tank Cleanup, Badrinath Srikanth Eluri Feb 1999

Analysis Of Dual-Gripper Manipulators And Finite Element Analysis Of The Flexible Laminated Hose For Underground Storage Tank Cleanup, Badrinath Srikanth Eluri

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The second generation long-reach manipulator - the dual-gripper Phase 3 Remote Tool Delivery (RTD) system has been developed to retrieve radioactive waste from underground storage tanks with internal structural members. The RTD is equipped with two grippers, one at each end of the system, to grasp the structural member. A vertical translation mechanism is also added to the system that enables the vertical motion inside the tank. This special feature provides greater dexterity and flexibility. Two operating open-chain configurations are considered and modeled. The first configuration is that gripper 1 grasps the structural member and gripper 2 is free to …
