Tantalum silicide (TaSi2) thin films were sputter deposited on p- type and n- type silicon substrates using VARIAN 3125 magnetron DC sputtering system with TaSi2 target. The thicknesses of TaSi2 thin films considered in this study are 200Å, 600Å and 1000Å, respectively. The TaSi2/Si wafers were annealed at temperatures in the range of 400 to 900°T. The sheet resistances of TaSi2 thin films with various thicknesses were measured by four-point probe before and after annealing. Porous Vycor tubes with 40Å initial pore diameter were modified using low pressure chemical vapor deposition (LPCVD) of silicon dioxide N02). Diethylsilane (DES) in conjunction with nitrous oxide (N2O) was used as a precursor to synthesize these SiO2 films. The aim of this study was to obtain a considerable selectivity between species of comparable size and hence N2O was used. The use of N2O was believed to make the process self-limiting. This study has investigated the interrelationships governing the growth kinetics, resulting compositions, and properties of boron nitride (B-C-N-H) and titanium nitride (Ti-N-Cl) films synthesized by low pressure chemical vapor deposition (LPCVD) using ammonia (NH3)/triethylamine-borane and NH3/titanium tetrachloride as reactants, respectively.Several analytical methods such as the FTIR, UVNisible spectroscopy, XPS, AES, RBS, SEM, and XRD were used to study the stoichiometry and structure of the deposited films.

The B-N-C-H films were synthesized over a temperature range of 300 to 8500C at various flow rate ratios of the reactants and total pressure range of 50 to 150 mTorr. …

Three-dimensional laser chemical vapor deposition (3D-LCVD) has been used to grow rods of carbon, tungsten, titanium, and hafnium from a variety of hydrocarbons and metal halide-based precursors. A novel computerized 3D-LCVD system was designed and successfully used in the experiments. A focused Nd:Yag laser beam (λ = 1.06 μm) was utilized to locally heat up a substrate to deposition temperature. The rods, which grew along the axis of the laser beam, had a typical diameter of 30–80 μm and a length of about 1 mm. Optoacoustic techniques are widely used to probe and characterize target materials including solids, liquids and gases. Included in such applications are diagnoses of thin films and semiconductor materials. The need to obtain greater spatial resolution requires the generation of shorter optoacoustic pulses. For such pulses, non-thermal effects may be quite important. On the other hand, even when an optoacoustic pulse is generated by an initially non-thermal technique, the thermal aspects become important in its evolution and propagation. Functionally-graded Titanium Matrix Composites, (F/G TMCs) combine the ideal properties of titanium matrix composites with the more practical machining qualities of monolithic (unreinforced) alloy. This material shows great promise in application to aerospace structural components - even in parts whose design requirements have defied the use of composite materials in the past. Successful implementation of such a material would lead to enhanced aircraft performance. However, the basic properties of a functionally-graded titanium matrix composite need to be investigated. Scratch free surfaces are required for substrates used in epitaxial growth. Silicon carbide (SiC) is a substrate material that is used in the epitaxial growth of SiC, GaN, and InGaN electronic devices. Preliminary chemical mechanical polishing (CMP) studies of 1 3/8" 4H-SiC wafers were performed in an attempt to identify the polishing parameter values that result in a maximum material removal rate and thus reduce substrate polishing time. The purpose of this research was to determine the quality of AIGaN samples with various mole fractions of aluminum doped with silicon. The samples utilized for this study were composed of an AIN buffer layer sandwiched between the sapphire substrate and AIGaN epilayer grown by molecular beam epitaxy (MBE). Cathodoluminescence (CL) and photoluminescence (PL) were employed to determine the mole fraction of aluminum in each sample. These techniques also gave insight into the material's nonuniformity, defects, and impurities. This dissertation describes a comparative study conducted on GaAs MSM photodetectors to assess the importance of surface effects on the optical and frequency response characteristics of MSM photodetectors. MSM photodetectors on III-V compound semiconductors are technologically important because of their applications to fiber optic communication systems. While surface effects have been previously ignored, they must be considered in assessing the ultimate performance limits of such devices, especially if nanoscale MSM photodetectors are to be used. Field emission and breakdown characteristics of high voltage, large area electrodes determine the performance of many vacuum-based electron sources. A corroborative project with the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility involves studying the behavior of such electrodes after nitrogen ion implantation. A Plasma Source Ion Implantation (PSII) facility is designed and constructed at William and Mary, and used to treat stainless steel electrodes. An RFI plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) system and a large-scale RF plasma source immersion ion implantation (PSII) system were designed and built to study two forms of 3-D surface processing, PECVD and PSII. This thesis presents a study on the effects of antioxidants on the oxidative induction time (OIT), thermal behavior, and hardness property of ultra high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE). The antioxidants were dissolved into methanol alcohol before the solution was mixed with UHMWPE powder. The mixture was degassed under vacuum, and then compression-molded into disks 1.25 in. in diameter.

Different antioxidants were evaluated at concentrations up to 0.6 percent. A 0.6 percent concentration was used to screen the effectiveness of various antioxidants. Effect of antioxidant concentration was investigated in the range between 0 and 0.6 percent. OIT was evaluated on UHMWPE …

The aerospace industry is beginning to use advanced composite materials for primary load bearing structures and their failure mechanisms must be better understood to predict their behavior in service. The Combined Loads Tests (COLTS) facility is being constructed at the NASA Langley Research Center to characterize these failure mechanisms. Laser based ultrasonic NDE can monitor the samples during dynamic loading without interfering with the structural tests. However, the constraints of implementing laser ultrasound in a structures laboratory reduces the efficiency of the technique. The objective of this research was to develop an in-situ sensing technique that monitors the molecular-level response of ions and dipoles to an applied electric field in order to characterize the changes in state of a polymer resin during chemical processing.
