Multivariate Analysis For The Quantification Of Transdermal Volatile Organic Compounds In Humans By Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell System, Ahmed Hasnain Jalal

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In this research, a proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) sensor was investigated for specific detection of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) for point-of-care (POC) diagnosis of the physiological conditions of humans. A PEMFC is an electrochemical transducer that converts chemical energy into electrical energy. A Redox reaction takes place at its electrodes whereas the volatile biomolecules (e.g. ethanol) are oxidized at the anode and ambient oxygen is reduced at the cathode. The compounds which were the focus of this investigation were ethanol (C2H5OH) and isoflurane (C3H2ClF5O), but theoretically, the sensor …

Electrochemical Behaviors Of The Electrodes For Proton Conducting Intermediate Temperature Solid Oxide Fuel Cells (It-Sofc), Shichen Sun

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Proton conducting intermediate temperature (600oC-400oC) solid oxide fuel cells (IT-SOFC) have many potential advantages for clean and efficient power generation from readily available hydrocarbon fuels. However, it still has many unsolved problems, especially on the anode where the fuel got oxidized and the cathode where oxygen got reduced. In this study, for the anode, the effects of hydrogen sulfite (H2S) and carbon dioxide (CO2) as fuel contaminants were studied on the nickel (Ni) based cermet anode of proton conducting IT-SOFC using proton conducting electrolyte of BaZr0.1Ce0.7Y0.1Yb0.1O3 (BZCYYb). Both low-ppm level H2S and low-percentage level CO2 caused similar poisoning effects on …

The Catalytic Performance Of Lithium Oxygen Battery Cathodes, Neha Chawla May 2018

The Catalytic Performance Of Lithium Oxygen Battery Cathodes, Neha Chawla

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

High energy density batteries have garnered much attention in recent years due to their demand in electric vehicles. Lithium-oxygen (Li-O2) batteries are becoming some of the most promising energy storage and conversion technologies due to their ultra-high energy density. They are still in the infancy stage of development and there are many challenges needing to be overcome before their practical commercial application. Some of these challenges include low round-trip efficiency, lower than theoretical capacity, and poor rechargeability. Most of these issued stem from the poor catalytic performance of the cathode that leads to a high overpotential of the battery. In …

Poly (Ionic Liquid) Based Electrolyte For Lithium Battery Application, Meer N. Safa May 2018

Poly (Ionic Liquid) Based Electrolyte For Lithium Battery Application, Meer N. Safa

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The demand for electric vehicles is increasing rapidly as the world is preparing for a fossil fuel-free future in the automotive field. Lithium battery technologies are the most effective options to replace fossil fuels due to their higher energy densities. However, safety remains a major concern in using lithium as the anode, and the development of non-volatile, non-flammable, high conductivity electrolytes is of great importance. In this dissertation, a gel polymer electrolyte (GPE) consisting of ionic liquid, lithium salt, and a polymer has been developed for their application in lithium batteries. A comparative study between GPE and ionic liquid electrolyte …

Thermodynamic Evaluation And Modeling Of Grade 91 Alloy And Its Secondary Phases Through Calphad Approach, Andrew Logan Smith Mr. May 2018

Thermodynamic Evaluation And Modeling Of Grade 91 Alloy And Its Secondary Phases Through Calphad Approach, Andrew Logan Smith Mr.

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Grade 91 (Gr.91) is a common structural material used in boiler applications and is favored due to its high temperature creep strength and oxidation resistance. Under cyclic stresses, the material will experience creep deformation eventually causing the propagation of type IV cracks within its heat-affected-zone (HAZ) which can be a major problem under short-term and long-term applications. In this study, we aim to improve this premature failure by performing a computational thermodynamic study through the Calculation of Phase Diagram (CALPHAD) approach. Under this approach, we have provided a baseline study as well as simulations based on additional alloying elements such …

Synthesis & Fundamental Formation Mechanism Study Of High Temperature & Ultrahigh Temperature Ceramics, Paniz Foroughi Apr 2018

Synthesis & Fundamental Formation Mechanism Study Of High Temperature & Ultrahigh Temperature Ceramics, Paniz Foroughi

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Borides and carbides of tantalum and hafnium are of great interest due to their ultrahigh temperature applications. Properties of these ceramics including oxidation resistance and mechanical properties might be further improved through solid solution/composite formation. Synthesis of single-phase TaxHf1-xC and TaxHf1-xB2 solid solution powders including nanopowders via carbothermal reduction (CTR) is complicated due to noticeable difference in reactivity of parent oxides with carbon, and also the low solubility of those oxides in each other. Moreover, for TaC-HfC system the solid solution may go through phase separation due to the presence of …

Reconfigurable Antennas Using Liquid Crystalline Elastomers, John Gibson Mar 2018

Reconfigurable Antennas Using Liquid Crystalline Elastomers, John Gibson

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation demonstrates the design of reversibly self-morphing novel liquid crystalline elastomer (LCE) antennas that can dynamically change electromagnetic performance in response to temperature. This change in performance can be achieved by programming the shape change of stimuli-responsive (i.e., temperature-responsive) LCEs, and using these materials as substrates for reconfigurable antennas. Existing reconfigurable antennas rely on external circuitry such as Micro-Electro-Mechanical-Systems (MEMS) switches, pin diodes, and shape memory alloys (SMAs) to reconfigure their performance. Antennas using MEMS or diodes exhibit low efficiency due to the losses from these components. Also, antennas based on SMAs can change their performance only once as …

Hybrid Electrochemical Capacitors: Materials, Optimization, And Miniaturization, Richa Agrawal

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

With the ever-advancing technology, there is an incessant need for reliable electrochemical energy storage (EES) components that can provide desired energy and power. At the forefront of EES systems are electrochemical capacitors (ECs), also known as supercapacitors that typically have higher power and superior cycle longevity but lower energy densities than their battery counterparts. One of the routes to achieve higher energy density for ECs is using the hybrid EC configuration, which typically utilizes a redox electrode coupled with a counter double-layer type electrode.

In this dissertation, both scale-up (coin-cell type) as well as scale-down (on-chip miniaturized) hybrid ECs were …
