Mechanistic Mixed-Mode Failure Criterion For Continuous Fiber-Polymer Composites, Thomas P. Bruce
Mechanistic Mixed-Mode Failure Criterion For Continuous Fiber-Polymer Composites, Thomas P. Bruce
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
Design of continuous fiber-polymer composite components with optimized and predictable energy dissipation requires a failure criterion able to predict the fracture energy of CFP composites for all mixed-mode loading conditions. Existing mixed-mode failure criteria are empirical and show poor correlation for a range of CFP composites. Therefore, a universally applicable criterion based on constituent material properties and operative failure mechanisms is required. A novel mechanistic failure criterion for CFP composites is proposed. The criterion considers resin fracture strength, hackle formation, interfacial debonding, the crack tip plastic zone and interply vs interyarn delamination. Experimental data obtained by mixed-mode testing of continuous …
Electronic And Magnetic Excitations In Graphene And Magnetic Nano-Ribbons, Maher Zakaria Ahmed Selim
Electronic And Magnetic Excitations In Graphene And Magnetic Nano-Ribbons, Maher Zakaria Ahmed Selim
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
The discovery of graphene - a 2D material with superior physical properties - in 2004 was important for the intensive global research to find alternatives to three-dimensional (3D) semiconductor materials in industry. At the same time there have been exciting advances for 2D magnetic materials on the nanometer scale. The superior properties of graphene are mainly attributed to its crystal structure and its relatively short-range interactions. These properties show that natural and artificial 2D materials are promising for new applications.
In this thesis we have carried out a comprehensive investigation of the effects of the 2D lattice structures, the roles …
On Developing Novel Energy-Relates Nanostructured Materials By Atomic Layer Deposition, Xiangbo Meng
On Developing Novel Energy-Relates Nanostructured Materials By Atomic Layer Deposition, Xiangbo Meng
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
ABSTRACT
This thesis presents the fabrication of a series of novel nanostructured materials using atomic layer deposition (ALD). In contrast to traditional methods including chemical vapor deposition (CVD), physical vapor deposition (PVD), and solution-based processes, ALD benefits the synthesis processes of nanostructures with many unrivalled advantages such as atomic-scale control, low temperature, excellent uniformity and conformality. Depending on the employed precursors, substrates, and temperatures, the ALD processes exhibited different characteristics. In particular, ALD has capabilities in fine-tuning compositions and structural phases. In return, the synthesis and the resultant nanostructured materials show many novelties.
This thesis covers ALD processes of four …
The Effect Of The Environment On The Corrosion Products And Corrosion Rates On Gas Transmission Pipelines, Brent Sherar
The Effect Of The Environment On The Corrosion Products And Corrosion Rates On Gas Transmission Pipelines, Brent Sherar
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
This thesis reports a series of investigations examining external corrosion processes along gas transmission pipelines. TransCanada PipeLines Ltd. (TCPL) has developed six proposed corrosion scenarios to describe external pipeline corrosion, based primarily on corrosion products and corrosion rates (CRs) observed at field sites. The six proposed corrosion scenarios can be divided into two groups: abiotic and biotic. The three abiotic corrosion scenarios are (1) anaerobic corrosion, (2) aerobic corrosion, and (3) anaerobic corrosion turning aerobic; while (4) anaerobic corrosion with microbial effects, (5) aerobic corrosion turning anaerobic with microbial effects, and (6) anaerobic corrosion with microbial effects turning aerobic comprise …
Early-Age Shrinkage Of Ultra High-Performance Concrete: Mitigation And Compensating Mechanisms, Ahmed Mohammed Soliman
Early-Age Shrinkage Of Ultra High-Performance Concrete: Mitigation And Compensating Mechanisms, Ahmed Mohammed Soliman
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
The very high mechanical strength and enhanced durability of ultra high-performance concrete (UHPC) make it a strong contender for several concrete applications. However, UHPC has a very low water-to-cement ratio, which increases its tendency to undergo early-age shrinkage cracking with a risk of decreasing its long-term durability. To reduce the magnitude of early-age shrinkage and cracking potential, several mitigation strategies have been proposed including the use of shrinkage reducing admixtures, internal curing methods (e.g. superabsorbent polymers), expansive cements and extended moist curing durations. To appropriately utilize these strategies, it is important to have a complete understanding of the driving forces …

Synthesis Of One-Dimensional And Two-Dimensional Carbon Based Nanomaterials, Mihnea Ioan Ionescu
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
Particular physical and chemical properties of carbon based nanomaterials (CBNs) have promised and exhibited great applications in manufacturing various nanodevices such as electron field emitters, sensors, one-dimensional conductors, supercapacitors, reinforcing fibres, hydrogen storage devices, and catalyst support for fuel cells electrodes. Despite these amazing technical progresses, many challenges still remain in the development of synthesis methods suitable for commercial applications and fabricating novel functional nanostructures with complex architecture.
In this Ph.D. thesis, one-dimensional (1D), two-dimensional (2D) carbon nanostructures, and 1D/2D hybrid of carbon nanostructures have been synthesized using various chemical vapour deposition (CVD) methods. The objective of this work is …
