Mechanical And Electro-Mechanical Properties Of Crystalline Organic Semiconductors, Marcos A. Reyes-Martinez Aug 2015

Mechanical And Electro-Mechanical Properties Of Crystalline Organic Semiconductors, Marcos A. Reyes-Martinez

Doctoral Dissertations

The study of the physical properties of organic crystalline semiconductors has allowed the advent of a new generation of high-performance organic electronic devices. Exceptional charge-transport properties and recent developments in large-area patterning techniques make organic single crystals (OSCs) excellent candidates for their utilization in the next-generation of electronic technologies, including flexible and conformable organic thin-film devices. In spite of the profound knowledge of the structural and electrical properties of OSCs, knowledge of the mechanical properties and the effects of mechanical strain is almost non-existent. This dissertation aims to bring new understanding of the intrinsic mechanical properties and the effect of …

Studies On The Wrinkling Of Thin Polymer Films Floating On Liquid, Kamil B. Toga Nov 2014

Studies On The Wrinkling Of Thin Polymer Films Floating On Liquid, Kamil B. Toga

Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation aims to broaden our understanding on wrinkling instabilities occurring on floating polymeric sheets, and tries to establish innovative methods that exploit these patterns in studies on material behavior and interfacial phenomena. We will address three major topics in this thesis including, i) characterization of the conditions required to buckle an annular disc, ii) characterization of wrinkles occurring around a droplet/bubble placed on a membrane that is kept taut at the liquid-air interface, and iii) using wrinkling patterns as a probe to understand the interfacial behavior and dynamics of ultrathin films. The first project in this thesis is about …

Controlling Morphology In Swelling-Induced Wrinkled Surfaces, Derek Breid Feb 2012

Controlling Morphology In Swelling-Induced Wrinkled Surfaces, Derek Breid

Open Access Dissertations

Wrinkles represent a pathway towards the spontaneous generation of ordered surface microstructure for applications in numerous fields. Examples of highly complex ordered wrinkle structures abound in Nature, but the ability to harness this potential for advanced material applications remains limited. This work focuses on understanding the relationship between the patterns on a wrinkled surface and the experimental conditions under which they form. Because wrinkles form in response to applied stresses, particular attention is given to the nature of the stresses in a wrinkling surface. The fundamental insight gained was then utilized to account for observed wrinkle formation phenomena within more …
