Demonstration Of Visible And Near Infrared Raman Spectrometers And Improved Matched Filter Model For Analysis Of Combined Raman Signals, Alexander Matthew Atkinson

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Raman spectroscopy is a powerful analysis technique that has found applications in fields such as analytical chemistry, planetary sciences, and medical diagnostics. Recent studies have shown that analysis of Raman spectral profiles can be greatly assisted by use of computational models with achievements including high accuracy pure sample classification with imbalanced data sets and detection of ideal sample deviations for pharmaceutical quality control. The adoption of automated methods is a necessary step in streamlining the analysis process as Raman hardware becomes more advanced. Due to limits in the architectures of current machine learning based Raman classification models, transfer from pure …

Enhanced Sensing Performance Of Novel Nanostructured Zno Gas Sensors In Ethanol Vapor Concentration Detection Applications, Pengtao Lin Oct 2019

Enhanced Sensing Performance Of Novel Nanostructured Zno Gas Sensors In Ethanol Vapor Concentration Detection Applications, Pengtao Lin

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Sensors are devices which have been commonly used to measure the functional dependence and the variability of physical parameters like temperature, pressure, pH, voltage, current, concentration, and others. Among the numerous kinds of sensors in different areas, gas sensors have been widely used and investigated for gas monitoring. Gas sensors are of crucial importance for the detection of hazardous atmospheres, because toxic gases are frequently odorless, colorless, invisible, rapidly evaporating, and flammable, and would otherwise go unnoticed. Gas sensors have been used in a variety of applications among others for the detection of specific gas species and the detection of …

A Dual Nanostructured Approach To Sers Amenable To Large-Scale Production, Kory Brian Castro Apr 2019

A Dual Nanostructured Approach To Sers Amenable To Large-Scale Production, Kory Brian Castro

Chemistry & Biochemistry Theses & Dissertations

A SERS device was made using a dual-nanostructured surface comprised of silver nanoparticle and silver nanowires. The ability of each nanostructure to produce a uniform surface was characterized and the surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) response of the resulting surfaces were examined using the reporter molecule 4-aminothiolphenol (ATP) and a 638 nm excitation laser.

A synthetic method was developed to produce silver nanowires with lengths of ~20 μm and diameters of ~100 nm with a narrow size distribution. The method utilized a simple, one-pot synthesis that is amenable to large-scale production. A selective precipitation method was used to the isolate the …

Off Axis Compressive Response Of Ice-Templated Ceramics, Rahul Kumar Jujjavarapu Apr 2019

Off Axis Compressive Response Of Ice-Templated Ceramics, Rahul Kumar Jujjavarapu

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

The off-axis compressive behavior of ice-templated ceramic was analyzed using experimental results and micro-mechanical model simulation. Ice-templated ceramics is a versatile processing technique used to manufacture anisotropic ceramic foam by exploiting the anisotropic growth characteristics and lamellar morphology. The ice-templating process results in processing-structure-property relationships determined by the microstructure. The processed alumina samples which were later manufactured by water jet machine from the freeze casting were tested under quasi-static off-axis loading conditions and were used to determine the mechanical properties of the material. Digital image correlation (DIC) was used to measure the strain response of ice-templated ceramic under off-axis loading. …

Effect Of Alkali On The Efficiency And Reliability Of Cu(In,Ga)Se2 Solar Cells, Shankar Karki Apr 2019

Effect Of Alkali On The Efficiency And Reliability Of Cu(In,Ga)Se2 Solar Cells, Shankar Karki

Physics Theses & Dissertations

The incorporation of alkali metal has contributed tremendously in a bid to realize greater than 20% efficient Cu(In,Ga)Se2(CIGS) solar cells. Achieving high efficiency is one key parameter for the success of a photovoltaic technology but so is its long-term stability. In this thesis, the relationship between the performance of alkali treated Cu(In,Ga)Se2 solar cells and their physicochemical, electronic and structural properties are explored through a comparative study between standard devices and alkali (K, Rb) treated devices. The alkali treated devices tend to have a lower concentration of Ev+0.98 eV trap, higher majority carrier concentration and …

A Review: Thermal Stability Of Methylammonium Lead Halide Based Perovskite Solar Cells, Tanzila Tasnim Ava, Abdullah Al Mamun, Sylvain Marsillac, Gon Namkoong Jan 2019

A Review: Thermal Stability Of Methylammonium Lead Halide Based Perovskite Solar Cells, Tanzila Tasnim Ava, Abdullah Al Mamun, Sylvain Marsillac, Gon Namkoong

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

Perovskite solar cells have achieved photo-conversion efficiencies greater than 20%, making them a promising candidate as an emerging solar cell technology. While perovskite solar cells are expected to eventually compete with existing silicon-based solar cells on the market, their long-term stability has become a major bottleneck. In particular, perovskite films are found to be very sensitive to external factors such as air, UV light, light soaking, thermal stress and others. Among these stressors, light, oxygen and moisture-induced degradation can be slowed by integrating barrier or interface layers within the device architecture. However, the most representative perovskite absorber material, CH3 …

N-I-P Nanocrystalline Hydrogenated Silicon Solar Cells With Rf-Magnetron Sputtered Absorbers, Dipendra Adhikari, Maxwell M. Junda, Corey R. Grice, Sylvain X. Marsillac, Robert W. Collins, Nikolas J. Podraza

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

Nanocrystalline hydrogenated silicon (nc-Si:H) substrate configuration n-i-p solar cells have been fabricated on soda lime glass substrates with active absorber layers prepared by plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) and radio frequency magnetron sputtering. The cells with nanocrystalline PECVD absorbers and an untextured back reflector serve as a baseline for comparison and have power conversion efficiency near 6%. By comparison, cells with sputtered absorbers achieved efficiencies of about 1%. Simulations of external quantum efficiency (EQE) are compared to experimental EQE to determine a carrier collection probability gradient with depth for the device with the sputtered i-layer absorber. This incomplete …

Ignition Of A Plasma Discharge Inside An Electrodeless Chamber: Methods And Characteristics, Mounir Laroussi

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

In this paper the generation and diagnostics of a reduced pressure (300 mTorr to 3 Torr) plasma generated inside an electrodeless containment vessel/chamber are presented. The plasma is ignited by a guided ionization wave emitted by a low temperature pulsed plasma jet. The diagnostics techniques include Intensified Charge Coupled Device (ICCD) imaging, emission spectroscopy, and Langmuir probe. The reduced-pressure discharge parameters measured are the magnitude of the electric field, the plasma electron number density and temperature, and discharge expansion speed.
