Economic Valuation Of Florida Sea Turtles In Face Of Sea Level Rise, Ahmed Hamed Jan 2013

Economic Valuation Of Florida Sea Turtles In Face Of Sea Level Rise, Ahmed Hamed

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Sea level rise (SLR) is posing a great risk of flooding and inundation to coastal areas in Florida. Some coastal nesting species, including sea turtle species, have experienced diminished habitat from SLR. In an effort to assess the economic and ecosystem service loss to coastal areas with respect to sea turtles Contingent Valuation Method (CVM) and Habitat Equivalency Analysis (HEA) were used. The CVM was used to measure the economic impacts of SLR on sea turtles. Open-ended and dichotomous choice CVM was used to obtain the willingness to pay (WTP) values of Florida residents to implement certain mitigation strategies which …

Mixing Effects On Shallow Water Bodies, Kim Robin Powell Jan 1975

Mixing Effects On Shallow Water Bodies, Kim Robin Powell

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

This report is intended to examine the ecological changes due to mixing in shallow water bodies. Physical, chemical, and biological changes are reported in literature. A literature search revealed the range of mixing nodes or processes. Assessment of ecological changes due to mixing by boating activities had been evaluated in a research project supported by the environmental Protection Agency and conducted at Florida Technological University. The examination of changes due to mechanical mixing on lake ecology simulated in fifty-five gallon drums indicated the sensitivity of such parameters as total Kjeldahl nitrogen, conductivity, pH, temperature, and dissolved oxygen. Problems of reproducibility …

Planning Programming Budgeting Study Of The City Of Winter Park, Alfred T. Sawicki Jan 1973

Planning Programming Budgeting Study Of The City Of Winter Park, Alfred T. Sawicki

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The report examines the applicability of Planning, Programming, and Budgeting System to the City of Winter Park. After briefly describing the character of the city, the goals are identified, the means by which they may be achieved and measure of evaluating progress toward them are given. To show how such an effort might be implemented, specific programs, objectives and effectiveness criteria are provided. These are followed by three examples in which the existing system is described and from which problems are revealed. Next, a brief analysis is performed to pinpoint the difficulty and a solution is proposed. The examples are …

Removal Of Color From Surface Water In Central Florida, Joseph R. Wanielista Jan 1973

Removal Of Color From Surface Water In Central Florida, Joseph R. Wanielista

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The USPHS limits color in water to 15 color units. However, it is desirable to remove all the color. Color in surface water is mainly due to humic substances and was found in concentrations varying up to 450 color units. Removal of color by coagulation and flocculation has been practiced over the years. The mechanisms involved have not yet been fully understood. During the course of this investigation, a literature survey, studying the nature of color, mechanisms or color removal, and optimum color removal conditions, has been conducted. Samples have been obtained from surface waters in Central Florida; namely Big …
