Instrumentation For Dynamic Nuclear Polarization And Application Of Electron Decoupling For Electron Relaxation Measurement, Nicholas Howard Alaniva
Instrumentation For Dynamic Nuclear Polarization And Application Of Electron Decoupling For Electron Relaxation Measurement, Nicholas Howard Alaniva
Arts & Sciences Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Dynamic nuclear polarization nuclear magnetic resonance (DNP NMR) exploits internal electron spin and nuclear spin interactions to increase sensitivity and uncover valuable information regarding structure and dynamics of a system. To manipulate these interactions, instrumentation is developed to combine high-power microwave and radiofrequency irradiation with the ability to spin samples at the magic angle (MAS) at temperatures from 90 K to 4.2 K. Electron decoupling uses frequency-modulated microwaves to mitigate the electron-nuclear dipolar interaction, improving signal intensity and resolution in DNP NMR experiments. Electron decoupling is combined with short DNP periods to encode electron spin information in polarized nuclear signal. …
Performance Enhancement And Characterization Of An Electromagnetic Railgun, Paul M. Gilles
Performance Enhancement And Characterization Of An Electromagnetic Railgun, Paul M. Gilles
Master's Theses
Collision with orbital debris poses a serious threat to spacecraft and astronauts. Hypervelocity impacts resulting from collisions mean that objects with a mass less than 1g can cause mission-ending damage to spacecraft. A means of shielding spacecraft against collisions is necessary. A means of testing candidate shielding methods for their efficacy in mitigating hypervelocity impacts is therefore also necessary. Cal Poly’s Electromagnetic Railgun was designed with the goal of creating a laboratory system capable of simulating hypervelocity (≥ 3 km/s) impacts. Due to several factors, the system was not previously capable of high-velocity (≥ 1 km/s) tests. A deficient projectile …
High Frequency Ltcc Based Planar Transformer, Adithya Venkatanarayanan
High Frequency Ltcc Based Planar Transformer, Adithya Venkatanarayanan
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
As we move towards high power and higher frequency related technology, conventional wire-wound magnetics have their own limitations which has led path to the development of planar based magnetic materials. Nowadays more planar magnetic technology has been employed because it is easier to fabricate them. The planar magnetic is a transformer or an inductor that replaces the wire-wound transformer or inductors which generally uses copper wires. One of the main reasons why we move to planar magnetic technology is its operation at higher frequency which provides higher power density. This study explains in detail about the design and fabrication of …

Interfacial Contact With Noble Metal - Noble Metal And Noble Metal - 2d Semiconductor Nanostructures Enhance Optical Activity, Ricardo Raphael Lopez Romo
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Noble metal nanoparticles and two-dimensional (2D) transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) crystals offer unique optical and electronic properties that include strong exciton binding, spin-orbital coupling, and localized surface plasmon resonance. Controlling these properties at high spatiotemporal resolution can support emerging optoelectronic coupling and enhanced optical features. Excitation dynamics of these optical properties on physicochemically bonded mono- and few-layer TMD crystals with metal nanocrystals and two overlapping spherical metal nanocrystals were examined by concurrently (i) DDA simulations and (ii) far-field optical transmission UV-vis spectroscopic measurements. Initially, a novel and scalable method to unsettle van der Waals bonds in bulk TMDs to prepare …

Exploring Convergence Of Snake Skin-Inspired Texture Designs And Additive Manufacturing For Mechanical Traction, Catherine Sue Tiner
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This research focuses on the understanding, development, and additive manufacture of a 3D printed snake skin-inspired texture pattern. The design functionalities of snake skin were determined through the study of the snake species Python Regius otherwise known as the ball python. Each scale of a snake has hierarchical texture with hexagonal macro-patterns aligned on the ventral surface of the skin with overriding anisotropic micro textured patterns such as denticulations and fibrils. Using a laser-powder bed fusion (L-PBF) process, 420 stainless steel samples were 3D printed which closely resemble the above described directional texture of natural snake skin. This printed surface …
Synthesis Of Cellulose Nanocrystal-Gold Nanoparticle Hybrid System For Surface Plasmon-Enhanced Property, Mahshid Iraniparast
Synthesis Of Cellulose Nanocrystal-Gold Nanoparticle Hybrid System For Surface Plasmon-Enhanced Property, Mahshid Iraniparast
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) have been brought to the forefront of various applications, ranging from theranostics, to organic photovoltaics, to biosensing owing to their localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) property. However, this property needs to be improved in order to allow for high sensitivity and quantitative detection of biomolecules. Hybrids of AuNPs with low-dielectric cellulose nanocrystal (CNCs) would yield enhancement of the LSPR property, which is driven by the confinement of electron oscillation at their interfaces. This study proposed a seed-mediated growth method to synthesize hybrids of CNCs-AuNPs. Sulfate groups on the surface of CNCs served as the sites for the …

Development Of A Comsol Microdialysis Model, Towards Creation Of Microdialysis On A Chip With Improved Geometries And Recovery, Patrick Pysz
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Microdialysis (µD) sampling is a diffusion-limited sampling method that has been widely used in different biomedical fields for greater than 35 years. Device calibration for in vivo studies is difficult for current non-steady state analytes of interest correlated with both inflammatory response and microbial signaling molecules (QS); which exist in low ng/mL to pg/mL with molecular weights over a wide range of 170 Da to 70 kDa. The primary performance metric, relative recovery (RR), relating the collected sample to the extracellular space concentration varies from 10% to 60% per analyte even under controlled bench-top conditions. Innovations in microdialysis device design …

Light is both analyzed and detected in a single, completely monolithic component which enables realizing a high-resolution portable spectrometer with an extremely compact footprint. The structure is comprised of a SiO2/Si3N4/SiO2 waveguide on top of a silicon wafer. Grating regions are fabricated on the top cladding of the waveguide. The input light is incident on a chirped grating …
The Challenges Of Low-Energy Secondary Electron Emission Measurement, Matthew J. Vincie
The Challenges Of Low-Energy Secondary Electron Emission Measurement, Matthew J. Vincie
Theses and Dissertations
The phenomena known as secondary electron emission was discovered over a century ago. Yet it remains very difficult to model accurately due to the limited availability of reliable experimental data. With the growing use of computer simulations in hardware development, the need for accurate models has increased. This research focused on determining what factors may be causing measurement discrepancies and methods for increasing the accuracy of measurements. It was found that several assumptions are commonly invoked when these measurements are performed that may not always be consistent with reality. The violation of these assumptions leads to measurement bias that is …

Unidirectional And Nonreciprocal Nanophotonic Devices Based On Graphene And Magneto-Optical Materials, Vahid Foroughi Nezhad
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
In this dissertation, we first introduce compact tunable spatial mode converters for graphene parallel plate (GPP) waveguides. The converters are reciprocal and based on spatial modulation of graphene’s conductivity. The wavelength of operation of the mode converters is tunable in the mid-infrared wavelength range by adjusting the chemical potential of a strip on one of the graphene layers of the GPP waveguides. We also introduce optical diodes for GPP waveguides based on a spatial mode converter and a coupler, which consists of a single layer of graphene placed in the middle between the two plates of two GPP waveguides. \par …
Nondestructive Electromagnetic Characterization Of Perfect-Electric-Conductor-Backed Uniaxial Materials, Adam L. Brooks
Nondestructive Electromagnetic Characterization Of Perfect-Electric-Conductor-Backed Uniaxial Materials, Adam L. Brooks
Theses and Dissertations
As the use of anisotropic materials in electromagnetic applications continues to proliferate, it becomes increasingly important to develop non-destructive evaluation methods for those materials in their installed configuration. In many applications, these materials are permanently affixed onto conducting bodies to reduce unwanted reflections, making it impossible to collect S21 or S12 transmission measurements as used in many techniques based on the well-known Nicolson-Ross-Weir algorithm. It also makes it impractical to reorient the sample to collect orthogonal measurements aligned with the optical axes of the anisotropic material. The goal of this research is to develop a two-reflection coefficient measurement …

Microscale beams of germanium ions were used to target different locations of aluminum galliumnitride/gallium nitride (AlGaN/GaN) high electron mobility transistors (HEMTs) to determine location dependent radiation effects. 1.7 MeV Ge ions were targeted at the gap between the gate and the drain to observe displacement damage effects while 47 MeV Ge ions were targeted at the gate to observe ionization damage effects. Electrical data was taken pre, during, and post irradiation. To separate transient from permanent degradation, the devices were characterized after a room temperature anneal for at least 30 days. Optical images were also analyzed pre and post irradiation. …
Design And Analysis Of Modular Axial Flux Switched Reluctance Motor, Rochak Shiwakoti
Design And Analysis Of Modular Axial Flux Switched Reluctance Motor, Rochak Shiwakoti
University of New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
This thesis presents a new modular structure of the axial flux Switched Reluctance Motor (SRM). The design consists of four stator disks with each adjacent disk rotated 30 degrees apart and four rotor disks connected to a common shaft. The proposed design aims to reduce the unwanted radial force, mitigate the torque ripple, and improve the efficiency. The modular structure distributes the radial force and torque strokes along the axial length of the motor, potentially damping the torque pulsation. In addition, the modular structure would deliver the rating power at a lower current level, reducing the overall ohmic loss. Moreover, …

Triple-Junction Solar Cells : In Parallel., Levi C Mays
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This paper looks into the current inefficiency of solar cells and attempts a few alternative solar cell structures in order to provide a more effective source of renewable energy. Currently, multi-junction solar cells are being developed to capture the sun’s light more efficiently. One of the ideas in this paper is to add a window to see if the addition of such a layer into a junction will increase the voltage while maintaining nearly the same current output. Central to this paper is the rearranging of the conducting layers of the multi-junction cell so that the junctions can be connected …
Polarization Properties Of Airy And Ince-Gaussian Laser Beams, Sean Michael Nomoto
Polarization Properties Of Airy And Ince-Gaussian Laser Beams, Sean Michael Nomoto
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The description of polarization states of laser light as linear, circular polarization within the paraxial scalar wave approximation is adequate for most applications. However, this description falls short when considering laser light as an electromagnetic wave satisfying Maxwell's equations. An electric field with a constant unit vector for direction of the field and a space dependent complex scalar amplitude in the paraxial wave approximation does not satisfy Maxwell equations which, in general, requires all three Cartesian components of electric and magnetic fields associated for a nonzero laser beam to be nonzero.
Physical observation of passing a linearly polarized laser through …

The Design Of Passive Networks With Full-Wave Component Models, Eric Valentino
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
In this thesis, the design of passive networks with the aid of full-wave simulation software and geometry-based models of lumped elements is investigated. This is done by examining the results of a number of simulation examples, as well as measured data from manufactured designs to compare against simulated equivalents. One such example is a chip antenna evaluation board design, in which the PCB, antenna, matching components and connector are all modeled. When measured, the simulation agreed with the board’s best matched frequency of 5.5 GHz to within 20 MHz. In another, a new antenna layout is generated from an existing …
Designing A Simulator For An Electrically-Pumped Organic Laser Diode, Robert Hulbert
Designing A Simulator For An Electrically-Pumped Organic Laser Diode, Robert Hulbert
Master's Theses
Organic semiconductors provide an alternative set of basis materials to fabricate electronic devices like PN Junctions, LEDs, and FETs. These materials have several benefits over traditional inorganic semiconductors including their mechanical flexibility, reliance on renewable resources, and inexpensive large-scale manufacturability. Despite the contemporary device implementations with organic semiconductors, a solid-state electrically-pumped organic laser diode does not exist. However, organically-based lasers do exist by utilizing the organic material strictly for optical gain. The challenge occurs when charge carriers appear in the organic material. The charge carriers must reach a concentration such that population inversion occurs producing optical gain. However, between the …

Dc-Dc Converter For Electric Vehicle, Jason Y. Zhou, Nicholas James Mah
Electrical Engineering
In this work, a DC-DC converter is designed for an electric vehicle. The DC-DC converter is designed to provide 500W with a 200-400V input and a 12-15V adjustable output. Electric vehicle sales are beginning to increase in popularity and the need for DC-DC converters to siphon power from the tractive system is not yet fully satisfied, especially for single-seater class vehicles. Additionally, improving performance in efficiency without sacrificing wide input voltage range can benefit future DC-DC converter designs. In the end, a forward active clamp DC-DC converter is designed and tested. Additionally, spreadsheet calculators, LTSpice simulations, and Matlab scripts were …

Algorithmic Multi-Color Cmos Avalanche Photodiodes For Smart-Lighting Applications, Md Mottaleb Hossain
Optical Science and Engineering ETDs
Future smart-lighting systems are expected to deliver adaptively color-tunable and high-quality lighting that is energy efficient while also offering integrated visible-light wireless communication services. To enable these systems at a commercial level, inexpensive and fast sensors with spectral-sensing capability are required. CMOS-compatible silicon avalanche photodiodes (APDs) can be an excellent fit to this problem due to their excellent sensitivity, high speeds and cost effectiveness; however, color sensing is a challenge without resorting to expensive spectral filters, as done in commercially. To address this challenge, we have recently designed and modeled a novel CMOS-compatible dual-junction APD. The device outputs two photocurrents …

Optical Response Analysis Of Thz Photoconductive Antenna Using Comsol Multiphysics, Jose Isaac Santos Batista
Optical Response Analysis Of Thz Photoconductive Antenna Using Comsol Multiphysics, Jose Isaac Santos Batista
Electrical Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses
A THz photoconductive antenna consists of antenna pads laid over a photoconductive substrate. These types of antennas are excited through the application of an optical pump (laser), which generates carriers inside the semiconductor. The acceleration and recombination of these carriers produce photocurrent that excites the antenna and generates THz pulse. This thesis focuses on analyzing the optical response of a photoconductive antenna, which consist of the interaction of the incident electric field of a laser pump with the radiating device. It develops the amplitude modulation process of a plane wave of light into a laser pump. It also takes into …

However, so far there is no publications about another important property, the electro-optical (EO) effect which is related to important applications in photolithography. This thesis is mainly mean to calculate the EO constants of one kind of organic perovskite material, CH3NH3PbI3, which has been reported to have good capability of forming film by spin-coating, through the way of putting the film of CH3NH3PbI3 between two layers of metal mirrors to build a Fabry-Perot interferometer and …
Characterization Of Hydride Vapor Phase Epitaxy Grown Gan Substrates For Future Iii-Nitride Growth, Alaa Ahmad Kawagy
Characterization Of Hydride Vapor Phase Epitaxy Grown Gan Substrates For Future Iii-Nitride Growth, Alaa Ahmad Kawagy
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The aim of this research is to investigate and characterize the quality of commercially obtained gallium nitride (GaN) on sapphire substrates that have been grown using hydride vapor phase epitaxy (HVPE). GaN substrates are the best choice for optoelectronic applications because of their physical and electrical properties. Even though HVPE GaN substrates are available at low-cost and create the opportunities for growth and production, these substrates suffer from large macro-scale defects on the surface of the substrate.
In this research, four GaN on sapphire substrates were investigated in order to characterize the surface defects and, subsequently, understand their influence on …
Investigation Of Critical Technologies Of Chemical Vapor Deposition For Advanced (Si)Gesn Materials, Joshua Matthew Grant
Investigation Of Critical Technologies Of Chemical Vapor Deposition For Advanced (Si)Gesn Materials, Joshua Matthew Grant
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The development of new materials for efficient optoelectronic devices from Group IV elements is the heart of Group IV photonics. This has direct ties to modern technology as the foundation for the electronics industry is silicon. This has driven the development of silicon-based optoelectronics using these other Group IV materials as silicon is a poor optical material due to its indirect band gap when compared to the III-V semiconductors that are used by most of the optoelectronics industry. While efforts have been made to integrate III-V materials onto silicon substrates, the incompatibility with the complementary metal oxide semiconductor process has …

Design And Performance Evaluation Of Linear And Axial-Flux Magnetic Gears, Mojtaba Bahrami Kouhshahi
Dissertations and Theses
The conversion from low speed to high speed and vice versa in various forms, including rotary and linear motion, is a requirement for a wide range of applications. For example, wind power generation requires a conversion of low speed rotation of turbine blades to high speed generator rotation, and ocean wave power generation is achievable by conversion of low speed linear motion to either high speed rotation or high speed linear motion. Mechanical gearboxes, hydraulic and pneumatic actuators are commonly used to achieve these conversions. However, these systems suffer from reliability issues, high maintenance requirements, noise, and lack of overload …
Designing Liquid Crystal For Optoacoustic Detection, Michael T. Dela Cruz
Designing Liquid Crystal For Optoacoustic Detection, Michael T. Dela Cruz
Theses and Dissertations
This research impacts the development of a cost-saving, on-chip device that can replace a wide range of costly, bulky sensors for commercial and defense applications. In particular, the goals of this work were to design and test a sensor that uses the optical properties of liquid crystal (LC) to detect acoustic waves. This began with developing a method to fine-tune the optical features of the liquid crystal. Statistical analysis of select experimental variables, or factors, lead to ideal settings of those variables when creating the sensor. A two-factor and three-factor experiment were separately conducted and analyzed as a preliminary demonstration …
