Design And Operation Of A Microwave Flow Cytometer For Single Cell Detection And Identification, Jeffrey A. Osterberg Aug 2022

Design And Operation Of A Microwave Flow Cytometer For Single Cell Detection And Identification, Jeffrey A. Osterberg

All Dissertations

Microwave dielectric sensing has become a popular technique in biological cell sensing for its potential in online, label-free, and real-time sensing. At microwave frequencies probing signals are sensitive to intracellular properties since they are able to penetrate cell membranes, making microwave flow cytometry a promising technology for label-free biosensing. In this dissertation a microwave flow cytometer is designed and used to measure single biological cells and micro particles. A radio frequency (RF)/microwave interferometer serves as the measurement system for its high sensitivity and tunability and we show that a two-stage interferometer can achieve up to 20 times higher sensitivity than …

Application Of Embedded Frequency Selective Surfaces For Structural Health Monitoring, Dustin Franklin Pieper Jan 2016

Application Of Embedded Frequency Selective Surfaces For Structural Health Monitoring, Dustin Franklin Pieper

Masters Theses

"This thesis proposes the use of Frequency Selective Surfaces (FSSs) as an embedded structural health monitoring (SHM) sensor. FSSs are periodic arrays of conductive elements that filter certain frequencies of incident electromagnetic radiation. The behavior of this filter is heavily dependent on the geometry of the FSS and local environment. Therefore, by monitoring how this filtering response changes when the geometric or environmental changes take place, information about those changes may be determined. In previous works, FSS-based sensing has shown promise for sensing normal strain (a stretching or compressing geometrical deformation). This concept is extended in this thesis by investigating …

The Impact Of Growth Conditions On Cubic Znmgo Ultraviolet Sensors, Ryan Boutwell Jan 2013

The Impact Of Growth Conditions On Cubic Znmgo Ultraviolet Sensors, Ryan Boutwell

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Cubic Zn1-xMgxO (c-Zn1-xMgxO) thin films have opened the deep ultraviolet (DUV) spectrum to exploration by oxide optoelectronic devices. These extraordinary films are readily wet-etch-able, have inversion symmetric lattices, and are made of common and safe constituents. They also host a number of new exciting experimental and theoretical challenges. Here, the relation between growth conditions of the c-Zn1-xMgxO film and performance of fabricated ultraviolet (UV) sensors is investigated. Plasma-Enhanced Molecular Beam Epitaxy was used to grow Zn1-xMgxO thin films and formation conditions were explored by varying the growth temperature, Mg source flux, oxygen flow rate, and radio-frequency (RF) power coupled into …
