A Mechanism Of Qos Differentiation Based On Offset Time And Adjusted Burstlength In Obs Networks, Viet Minh Nhat Vo, Trung Duc Pham, Thanh Chuong Dang, Van Hoa Le

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Quality of service (QoS) differentiation is an integral component of any networking system, particularly, with the current and future great diversity of users? applications and their manifold requirements. In optical burst switching (OBS) networks, there are two approaches for QoS differentiation: one is based on offset time and the other is based on burst length. This paper presents a mechanism of QoS differentiation based on both offset time and burst length, in which the offset times are calculated to achieve a complete isolation of data loss between priority classes and the burst length is adaptively adjusted according to the feedbacked …

A Priority-Based Queuing Model Approach Using Destination Parameters Forreal-Time Applications On Ipv6 Networks, Sadetti̇n Demi̇r, İbrahi̇m Özçeli̇k

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

In the early days of the Internet architecture, the most important aim is to transmit data over packet switched networks. The traditional Internet architecture used in these networks lacks quality of service. However, today, as realtime applications increase, it is needed. There are approaches to improving the quality of service using the flow label field in the Internet Protocol version 6 header. In this study, a novel algorithm that uses destination network parameters to reduce queuing and end-to-end delay is created. A round-robin-based time-aware priority queue new model is used within this algorithm. Data packets using this proposed queue are …

A Distributed Measurement Architecture For Inferring Tcp Round-Trip Times Through Passive Measurements, Fatih Abut Jan 2019

A Distributed Measurement Architecture For Inferring Tcp Round-Trip Times Through Passive Measurements, Fatih Abut

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

The round-trip time (RTT), defined as the time elapsed for transmission of a data packet to travel from one endpoint to the other and back again, is an important parameter for Internet quality. This paper proposes an extended version of the well-known SYN/ACK (SA) methodology for passively measuring the RTTs over Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) connections. Differently from the original version of the SA methodology and the rest of studies in the related literature, the proposed passive methodology measures not only the total RTT of an end-to-end connection but also the proportion of the existing connection sections on this entire …

Qoe Enhancement In Next Generation Wireless Ecosystems: A Machine Learning Approach, Eva Ibarrola, Mark Davis, Camille Voisin, Ciara Close, Leire Cristobo

Articles

Next-generation wireless ecosystems are expected to comprise heterogeneous technologies and diverse deployment scenarios. Ensuring quality of service (QoS) will be one of the major challenges on account of a variety of factors that are beyond the control of network and service providers in these environments. In this context, ITU-T is working on defining new Recommendations related to QoS and users' quality of experience (QoE) for the 5G era. Considering the new ITU-T QoS framework, we propose a methodology to develop a global QoS management model for next generation wireless ecosystems taking advantage of big data and machine learning (ML). The …

Antenna Selection And Transmission Power For Energy Efficiency In Downlink Massive Mimo Systems, Adeeb Salh, Lukman Audah, Nor Shahida Mohd Shah, Shipun Anuar Hamzah, Hasan Saeed Mir Jan 2019

Antenna Selection And Transmission Power For Energy Efficiency In Downlink Massive Mimo Systems, Adeeb Salh, Lukman Audah, Nor Shahida Mohd Shah, Shipun Anuar Hamzah, Hasan Saeed Mir

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Massive multiinput-multioutput (M-MIMO) systems are crucial for maximizing energy efficiency (EE) in fifth-generation (5G) wireless networks. A M-MIMO system's achievable high data rate is highly related to the number of antennas, but increasing the number of antennas the system raises energy consumption. In this paper, we derive ergodic EE based on the optimal transmit power and joint optimization antenna selection (AS) with impact pilot reuse sequences (PRSs). We apply Newton's method and the Lagrange multiplier to derive jointly optimized AS and optimal transmission power under the effect of PRSs. The proposed algorithm prevents repeated searching for joint optimal AS and …

A Machine Learning Approach For Power Allocation In Hetnets Considering Qos, Roohollah Amiri, Hani Mehrpouyan, Lex Fridman, Ranjan K. Mallik, Arumugam Nallanathan, David Matolak

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

There is an increase in usage of smaller cells or femtocells to improve performance and coverage of next-generation heterogeneous wireless networks (HetNets). However, the interference caused by femtocells to neighboring cells is a limiting performance factor in dense HetNets. This interference is being managed via distributed resource allocation methods. However, as the density of the network increases so does the complexity of such resource allocation methods. Yet, unplanned deployment of femtocells requires an adaptable and self-organizing algorithm to make HetNets viable. As such, we propose to use a machine learning approach based on Q-learning to solve the resource allocation …

Self-Organizing Mmwave Networks: A Power Allocation Scheme Based On Machine Learning, Roohollah Amiri, Hani Mehrpouyan

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Millimeter-wave (mmWave) communication is anticipated to provide significant throughout gains in urban scenarios. To this end, network densification is a necessity to meet the high traffic volume generated by smart phones, tablets, and sensory devices while overcoming large pathloss and high blockages at mmWaves frequencies. These denser networks are created with users deploying small mmWave base stations (BSs) in a plug-and-play fashion. Although, this deployment method provides the required density, the amorphous deployment of BSs needs distributed management. To address this difficulty, we propose a self-organizing method to allocate power to mmWave BSs in an ultra dense network. The proposed …

Novel Scheduling Algorithm For Optimizing Real-Time Multimedia Performance In Long Term Evolution-Advanced, Huda Adibah Mohd Ramli, Zairi Ismael Rizman

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Real-time multimedia applications are becoming increasingly popular among mobile cellular users. Given that Long Term Evolution-Advanced (LTE-A), which is an emerging mobile cellular standard, needs to support these multimedia applications, packet scheduling is of paramount importance in LTE-A. This paper proposes a packet scheduling algorithm known as novel scheduling for usage in the downlink of LTE-A. It takes channel quality, average throughput, and packet delay into account when determining the priority of each user. Simulation results demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed algorithm in optimizing real-time multimedia performance for more mobile cellular users.

Dynamic Slot-Based Carrier Scheduling Scheme For Downlink Multimedia Traffic Over Lte Advanced Networks With Carrier Aggregation, Ramachandran Vijayarani, Lakshmanan Nithyanandan

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Carrier aggregation (CA) in long-term evolution advanced (LTE-A) networks is a promising tool for providing bandwidth extension for high data rate communication. In CA, the efficient scheduling of carriers has imposed a new challenge in the design of delay-sensitive carrier scheduling for mobile multimedia applications. In this paper, a new dynamic slot-based carrier scheduling scheme has been proposed for efficient resource allocation to support the quality of service (QoS) of mobile traffic over CA transmission. The key idea of this scheduling is the allocation of slots for each component carrier based on the queue state information, taking into consideration the …

Bandwidth Allocation For Multiple Iptv Users Sharing The Same Link: A Case Study Of Telecom Of Kosovo, Arianit Maraj, Adrian Shehu, Dardan Maraj, Ruzhdi Sefa

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Almost all operators today are facing constant requests for multiple video services in a single household. In these situations, video services have to compete for finite network bandwidth and other equipment resources. Each of them requires different bandwidth capacities. This dynamic behavior can jeopardize both quality of service and quality of experience. One should keep in mind that some video channels require more bandwidth than others. Telecom of Kosovo (TK) is facing the same issues. The encoders at TK are not scalable and they treat all video streams equally, without taking into consideration the fact that some video streams require …

to the different services in mobile broadband networks (WiMAX, LTE). A new connection is admitted only when the network can support the QoS needs of the connection without degrading the QoS for existing connections. An efficient call admission control algorithm ensures higher throughput and fewer delays for the admitted connections. In this paper a graded priority-based call admission control algorithm is proposed for LTE and WiMAX networks. The number of permissible connections shall be segregated into two classes. The new connection shall be graded, prioritized, and admitted based on the device requesting the connection. Simulation results show that graded priority-based …

Replication is one of the main techniques aiming to improve Web services’ (WS) quality of service (QoS) in distributed environments, including clouds and mobile devices. Service replication is a way of improving WS performance and availability by creating several copies or replicas of Web services which work in parallel or sequentially under defined circumstances. In this paper, a generalized replication process for distributed environments is discussed based on established replication studies. The generalized replication process consists of three main steps: sensing the environment characteristics, determining the replication strategy, and implementing the selected replication strategy. To demonstrate application of the generalized …

Load Management In A Distributed Multimedia Streaming Environment Using A Fault-Tolerant Hierarchical System, Hadi̇ Işik Aybay, Mohammad Ahmed Shah

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

In contrast to text-only forms of communications, multimedia uses a combination of audiovisual means alongside textual modes of communication. Streaming multimedia is such multimedia that is constantly delivered by a provider of the multimedia to a client. In streaming multimedia the streamed content is continually presented to and received by the end user. Distributed multimedia systems (DMSs) deliver multimedia content to end-users by means of distributed multimedia databases and distributed information servers. These DMSs are designed to deliver multimedia content over a network. A fault-tolerant redundant hierarchy (Red-HI)-based load management policy for a distributed multimedia streaming system is proposed in …

Embedded Virtual Machines For Robust Wireless Control Systems, Rahul Mangharam, Miroslav Pajic Oct 2012

Embedded Virtual Machines For Robust Wireless Control Systems, Rahul Mangharam, Miroslav Pajic

Rahul Mangharam

Embedded wireless networks have largely focused on open loop sensing and monitoring. To address actuation in closed loop wireless control systems there is a strong need to re-think the communication architectures and protocols for reliability, coordination and control. As the links, nodes and topology of wireless systems are inherently unreliable, such time-critical and safety-critical applications require programming abstractions where the tasks are assigned to the sensors, actuators and controllers as a single component rather than statically mapping a set of tasks to a specific physical node at design time. To this end, we introduce the Embedded Virtual Machine (EVM), a …

Energy Efficiency In Multiaccess Fading Channels Under Qos Constraints, Deli Qiao, Mustafa Cenk Gursoy, Senem Velipasalar Jan 2012

Energy Efficiency In Multiaccess Fading Channels Under Qos Constraints, Deli Qiao, Mustafa Cenk Gursoy, Senem Velipasalar

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications

In this article, transmission over multiaccess fading channels under quality-of-service (QoS) constraints is studied in the low-power and wideband regimes. QoS constraints are imposed as limitations on the buffer violation probability. The effective capacity, which characterizes the maximum constant arrival rates in the presence of such statistical QoS constraints, is employed as the performance metric. A two-user multiaccess channel model is considered, and the minimum bit energy levels and wideband slope regions are characterized for different transmission and reception strategies, namely time-division multiple-access (TDMA), superposition coding with fixed decoding order, and superposition coding with variable decoding order. It is shown …

Queue Length Based Pacing Of Internet Traffic, Cai Yan Sep 2011

Queue Length Based Pacing Of Internet Traffic, Cai Yan

Open Access Dissertations

As the Internet evolves, there is a continued demand for high Internet bandwidth. This demand is driven partly by the widely spreading real-time video applications, such as on-line gaming, teleconference, high-definition video streaming. All-optical switches and routers have long been studied as a promising solution to the rapidly growing demand. Nevertheless, buffer sizes in all-optical switches and routers are very limited due to the challenges in manufacturing larger optical buffers. On the other hand, Internet traffic is bursty. The existence of burstiness in network traffic has been shown at all time scales, from tens of milliseconds to thousands of seconds. …

Mechanisms For Quality-Of-Service Provisioning In Networks With Extended Services, Zhen Qin May 2010

Mechanisms For Quality-Of-Service Provisioning In Networks With Extended Services, Zhen Qin

Dissertations

The emerging network traffic with various Quality-of-Service (QoS) requirements creates a demand for QoS service provisioning beyond the best effort service that Internet currently provides. QoS provisioning requires a framework that satisfies users' QoS and cost demand while maximizes benefits for network service providers. It is considered that QoS provisioning involves three issues: a) estimations of the network QoS performance, which can be achieved by performing network measurement; b) dissemination of the measured QoS states throughout the network with states exchanged among different network routers; and c) QoS routing. In this dissertation, these three issues are addressed.

In QoS networks, …

The Changing Patterns Of Internet Usage, Christopher S. Yoo

All Faculty Scholarship

The Internet unquestionably represents one of the most important technological developments in recent history. It has revolutionized the way people communicate with one another and obtain information and created an unimaginable variety of commercial and leisure activities. Interestingly, many members of the engineering community often observe that the current network is ill-suited to handle the demands that end users are placing on it. Indeed, engineering researchers often describe the network as ossified and impervious to significant architectural change. As a result, both the U.S. and the European Commission are sponsoring “clean slate” projects to study how the Internet might be …

Probability Density Functions For Snir In Ds-Cdma, David W. Matolak

Faculty Publications

Analytical expressions for the probability density function of block-wise signal-to-noise-plus-interference ratio for both synchronous and asynchronous direct-sequence spread spectrum code-division multiple access systems are developed, for equal average energy signals on the Gaussian and Rayleigh flat fading channels. Using the standard Gaussian approximation for multi-user interference, accurate density approximations are obtained, which agree very well with computer simulation results.

An Experimental Investigation Of Real-Time Video Transmission Over Ieee 802.11e Wlan Networks Using Txop, Nicola Cranley, Mark Davis

Conference papers

Real-time multimedia streaming applications require a strict bounded end-to-end delay and are considered to be bursty as each video frame is typically transmitted as a burst of packets. In this paper we show how the distribution of video frame sizes can be used to efficiently dimension the IEEE 802.11e TXOP limit parameter to efficiently deal with this burstiness in order to enhance the transmission of real-time video streaming services. Through experimental investigation, we show that by using the mean video frame size to dimension the TXOP limit parameter, the transmission delay for the video frame is reduced by 67% under …

An Experimental Investigation Of Parallel Multimedia Streams Over Ieee 802.11e Wlan Networks Using Txop, Nicola Cranley, Tanmoy Debnath, Mark Davis

Conference papers

In this paper we perform an experimental investigation of the IEEE 802.11 TXOP facility to enhance the transmission of parallel multimedia streaming sessions through efficient bandwidth reservation and explicitly consider both the audio and video streams. The delay constraints associated with the audio and video streams that comprise a multimedia session pose the greatest challenge since real-time multimedia is particularly sensitive to delay as the packets require a strict bounded end-to-end delay. We show how the TXOPlimit parameter can be efficiently dimensioned to reduce the tranmission delay for the video frames. Due to tis frame-based nature, video applications are considered …

Dynamic Bandwidth Management With Service Differentiation Over Ethernet Passive Optical Networks, Yuanqiu Luo May 2006

Dynamic Bandwidth Management With Service Differentiation Over Ethernet Passive Optical Networks, Yuanqiu Luo

Dissertations

Ethernet passive optical networks (EPONs) address the first mile of the communication infrastructure between the service provider central offices and the customer sites. As a low-cost, high speed technology, EPONs are deemed as the solution to the bottleneck problem of the broadband access network.

A major feature of EPONs is the utility of a shared upstream channel among the end users. Only a single optical network unit (GNU) may transmit during a timeslot to avoid data collisions. In order to provide diverse quality of service (QoS), the bandwidth management of the upstream channel is essential for the successful implementation of …

Medium Access Control And Networking Protocols For The Intra-Body Network, Eric Thomas Stucki Mar 2006

Medium Access Control And Networking Protocols For The Intra-Body Network, Eric Thomas Stucki

Theses and Dissertations

Biomedical applications offer an exciting growth opportunity for wireless sensor networks. However, radio frequency communication is problematic in hospital environments that are susceptible to interference in the industrial, scientific, and medical (ISM) bands. Also, RF is inherently insecure as eavesdroppers can easily pick up signals. The Intra-Body Network (IBNet) proposes a novel communication model for biomedical sensor networks. It seeks the convenience of wireless communication while avoiding interference and privacy concerns associated with RF. IBNet's solution is to utilize a subject's own body tissue as a transmission medium. Assuming that transmissions are contained within the body, IBNet solves otherwise complex …

Quality-Of-Service Provisioning In High Speed Networks : Routing Perspectives, Gang Cheng May 2005

Quality-Of-Service Provisioning In High Speed Networks : Routing Perspectives, Gang Cheng

Dissertations

The continuous growth in both commercial and public network traffic with various quality-of-service (QoS) requirements is calling for better service than the current Internet's best effort mechanism. One of the challenging issues is to select feasible paths that satisfy the different requirements of various applications. This problem is known as QoS routing. In general, two issues are related to QoS routing: state distribution and routing strategy. Routing strategy is used to find a feasible path that meets the QoS requirements. State distribution addresses the issue of exchanging the state information throughout the network, and can be further divided into two …

Performance Analysis Of Network-Level Qos With Encoding Configuration For Unicast Video Streaming Over Ieee 802.11 Wlan Networks, Nicola Cranley, Mark Davis Jan 2005

Performance Analysis Of Network-Level Qos With Encoding Configuration For Unicast Video Streaming Over Ieee 802.11 Wlan Networks, Nicola Cranley, Mark Davis

Conference papers

Video streaming has a large impact on the resource requirements of the WLAN. However, there are many variables involved in video streaming, such as the video content being streamed, how the video is encoded and how it is sent. This makes the role of radio resource management extremely difficult. In this paper we investigate the effect that video encoding configurations has on the network resource requirements for unicast video streaming in a WLAN environment. We compare the network resource requirements of several content types encoded at various encoding configurations with varying I-frame frequencies, target encoding bit rates and hint track …
