Smart cities are an important concept for urban development. This concept addresses many current critical urban problems including traffic and environmental pollution. As utilization of the Internet of things and technology in smart cities increases, large volumes of big data are generated and collected by sensors embedded at different places in the city, which present a real-time display of what is happening throughout the city at all times. Neuro Emission Controller For Minimizing Cyclic Dispersion In Spark Ignition Engines, Pingan He, Jagannathan Sarangapani

A novel neural network (NN) controller is developed to control spark ignition (SI) engines at extreme lean conditions. The purpose of neurocontroller is to reduce the cyclic dispersion at lean operation even when the engine dynamics are unknown. The stability analysis of the closed-loop control system is given and the boundedness of all signals is ensured. Results demonstrate that the cyclic dispersion is reduced significantly using the proposed controller. The neuro controller can also be extended to minimize engine emissions with high EGR levels, where similar complex cyclic dynamics are observed. Coke Oven Emissions: A Case Study Of Technology-Based Regulation, John D. Graham, David R. Holtgrave

After examining and analyzing the experience with coke ovens, the authors conclude that attempts to force technology beyond its demonstrated competence can be both expensive and ineffective in controlling hazards. They also suggest implications for pending proposals to further control air pollution.
