Lifetime Estimation Of Igbts In A Grid-Connected Statcom, Lakshmi Reddy Gopi Reddy Dec 2014

Lifetime Estimation Of Igbts In A Grid-Connected Statcom, Lakshmi Reddy Gopi Reddy

Doctoral Dissertations

Lifetime estimation of power semiconductor devices, and IGBT devices in particular, used in the power electronics integrated with power systems has gained technical importance in recent times with increased scope of distributed generation, renewable energy systems and FACTS. Since most of the common failures (wire bond and solder fatigue) are caused by thermo-mechanical stresses, the methodology of lifetime estimation starts with temperature estimation, cycle counting based on rainflow algorithm, and finally degradation calculation based on linear accumulation model.

Different number of RC cells for each packaging layer in the module for the thermal model, including the influence of encapsulant is …

Adaptive Control For Power System Voltage And Frequency Regulation, Yao Xu Dec 2014

Adaptive Control For Power System Voltage And Frequency Regulation, Yao Xu

Doctoral Dissertations

Variable and uncertain wind power output introduces new challenges to power system voltage and frequency stability. To guarantee the safe and stable operation of power systems, the control for voltage and frequency regulation is studied in this work.

Static Synchronous Compensator (STATCOM) can provide fast and efficient reactive power support to regulate system voltage. In the literature, various STATCOM control methods have been discussed, including many applications of proportional–integral (PI) controllers. However, these previous works obtain the PI gains via a trial and error approach or extensive studies with a tradeoff of performance and applicability. Hence, control parameters for the …

Comprehensive Statcom Control For Distribution And Transmission System Applications, Shubham Gupta Aug 2014

Comprehensive Statcom Control For Distribution And Transmission System Applications, Shubham Gupta

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

This thesis presents the development of a comprehensive STATCOM controller for load compensation, voltage regulation and voltage balancing in electric power distribution and transmission networks. The behavior of this controller is first validated with published results. Subsequently, the performance of this STATCOM controller is examined in a realistic Hydro One distribution feeder for accomplishing the compensation of both mildly and grossly unbalanced loads, and balancing of network voltages using PSCAD/EMTDC software. The STATCOM voltage control function is utilized for increasing the connectivity of wind plants in the same distribution feeder. The thesis further presents a frequency scanning technique for simple …

Modeling And Simulation Of Parallel D-Statcoms With Full-Wave Rectifiers, Jason Brinsfield May 2014

Modeling And Simulation Of Parallel D-Statcoms With Full-Wave Rectifiers, Jason Brinsfield

Master's Theses

In recent years, both a significant increase in electrical demand and a large influx of intermittent renewable energy sources have put a considerable stress on the nation’s electrical grid. Conventional power flow control techniques such as capacitor banks and tap-changing transformers are incapable of adequately handling the rapid fluctuations in power supply and demand that today’s grid experiences. Flexible AC Transmission System (FACTS) controllers are a practical way to compensate for such rapid power fluctuations. One type of shunt FACTS controller is the Static Synchronous Compensator (STATCOM), which uses fully controllable switches to source or sink reactive power to a …
