Low Cost Infrared And Near Infrared Sensors For Uavs, Samuel T. Aden, James P. Bialas, Zachary Champion, Eugene Levin, Jessica L. Mccarty

Michigan Tech Research Institute Publications

Thermal remote sensing has a wide range of applications, though the extent of its use is inhibited by cost. Robotic and computer components are now widely available to consumers on a scale that makes thermal data a readily accessible resource. In this project, thermal imagery collected via a lightweight remote sensing Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) was used to create a surface temperature map for the purpose of providing wildland firefighting crews with a cost-effective and time-saving resource. The UAV system proved to be flexible, allowing for customized sensor packages to be designed that could include visible or infrared cameras, GPS, …

Fabrication And Comparison Of Electrospun Cobalt Oxide-Antimony Doped Tin Oxide (Coo-Ato) Nanofibers Made With Ps: D-Limonene And Ps: Toluene, Manopriya Devisetty Subramanyam Nov 2014

Fabrication And Comparison Of Electrospun Cobalt Oxide-Antimony Doped Tin Oxide (Coo-Ato) Nanofibers Made With Ps: D-Limonene And Ps: Toluene, Manopriya Devisetty Subramanyam

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This work investigates the fabrication, process optimization, and characterization of cobalt oxide-antimony doped tin oxide (CoO-ATO) nanofibersusing polystyrene (PS) solutions with toluene orD-limonene as solvents. These nanofibers are produced by anelectrospinning process. Nanofibers are fabricated using polymeric solutions of CoO doped ATO and mixtures of PS: D-limonene and PS:toluene. PSis a base aromatic organic polymer, a non-toxic material, and a versatile catalyst for fiber formation. PSsolutions are made by mixing polystyrene beads and D-limonene or toluene at specific weight percentages. These polymeric solutions of PS: D-limonene and PS:toluene are then mixed with CoO-ATO at various weight percentages. The two solutions …

Circular Polarized Leaky Wave Surface, Franklin Muriuki Manene, Brian A. Lail, Edward C. Kinzel Aug 2014

Circular Polarized Leaky Wave Surface, Franklin Muriuki Manene, Brian A. Lail, Edward C. Kinzel

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Faculty Publications

A circular polarized (CP) infrared (IR) leaky wave surface design is presented. The metasurface consists of an array of rectangular patches connected by microstrip and operating over the long-wave infrared (LWIR) spectrum with directional wave emission and absorption. The surface is composed of periodically aligned arrays of sub-wavelength metal patches separated from a ground plane by a dielectric slab. The design combines the features of the conventional patch and leaky wave antenna leading to a metasurface that preferentially emits CP IR radiation by use of axial asymmetrical unit cells. This is a deviation from reported structures that mainly employ a …

Large Area Conformal Infrared Frequency Selective Surfaces, Jeffrey D'Archangel Jan 2014

Large Area Conformal Infrared Frequency Selective Surfaces, Jeffrey D'Archangel

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Frequency selective surfaces (FSS) were originally developed for electromagnetic filtering applications at microwave frequencies. Electron-beam lithography has enabled the extension of FSS to infrared frequencies; however, these techniques create sample sizes that are seldom appropriate for real world applications due to the size and rigidity of the substrate. A new method of fabricating large area conformal infrared FSS is introduced, which involves releasing miniature FSS arrays from a substrate for implementation in a coating. A selective etching process is proposed and executed to create FSS particles from crossed-dipole and square-loop FSS arrays. When the fill-factor of the particles in the …

Broad Bandwidth, All-Fiber, Thulium-Doped Photonic Crystal Fiber Amplifier For Potential Use In Scaling Ultrashort Pulse Peak Powers, Alex Sincore Jan 2014

Broad Bandwidth, All-Fiber, Thulium-Doped Photonic Crystal Fiber Amplifier For Potential Use In Scaling Ultrashort Pulse Peak Powers, Alex Sincore

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Fiber based ultrashort pulse laser sources are desirable for many applications; however generating high peak powers in fiber lasers is primarily limited by the onset of nonlinear effects such as self-phase modulation, stimulated Raman scattering, and self-focusing. Increasing the fiber core diameter mitigates the onset of these nonlinear effects, but also allows unwanted higher-order transverse spatial modes to propagate. Both large core diameters and single-mode propagation can be simultaneously attained using photonic crystal fibers. Thulium-doped fiber lasers are attractive for high peak power ultrashort pulse systems. They offer a broad gain bandwidth, capable of amplifying sub-100 femtosecond pulses. The longer …
