Heuristic Algorithms For Solving Convex And Nonconvex Economic Dispatch, Yusuf Yare, Ganesh K. Venayagamoorthy, Ahmed Yousuf Saber

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Economic dispatch (ED) is a power system optimization problem, and its objective is to reduce the total generation cost of units while satisfying constraints. the presence of nonlinearities in practical generator operation makes solving the ED problem more challenging. These generator nonlinearities are modeled as constraints to be met in the form of ramp-rate limits and prohibited operating zones. This paper proposes three heuristic algorithms, namely, the genetic algorithm (GA), differential evolution (DE) and modified particle swarm optimization (MPSO) to solve this ED problem for two test systems. Simulation, numerical results and convergence performances of these three algorithms are presented …

A New Framework For Power System Identification Based On An Improved Genetic Algorithm, Lin Gao

Lin Gao

Accuracy parameters of power system model are of great importance in stability and security evaluation or simulation. Some of the conventional methods may have inadequate adaptability or effectiveness for identification of different power systems. A general framework for power system identification is proposed based on an improved genetic algorithm with a logarithmic fitness function and an adaptive searching space. It can be used for most power system models (linear or nonlinear) and can readily be performed on different models just by rebuilt corresponding map lists between the parameters and the coefficients of the general model. The numerical experiment and practical …

A multiobjective genetic algorithm is designed to optimize a computer-aided detection (CAD) system for identifying colonic polyps. Colonic polyps appear as elliptical protrusions on the inner surface of the colon. Curvature-based features for colonic polyp detection have proved to be successful in several CT colonography (CTC) CAD systems. Our CTC CAD program uses a sequential classifier to form initial polyp detections on the colon surface. The classifier utilizes a set of thresholds on curvature-based features to cluster suspicious colon surface regions into polyp candidates. The thresholds were previously chosen experimentally by using feature histograms. The chosen thresholds were effective for …
