Charging-Induced Asymmetry In Molecular Conductors, Eric Polizzi, S. Datta, A. Ghosh, M. Paullson, F. Zahhid Dec 2004

Charging-Induced Asymmetry In Molecular Conductors, Eric Polizzi, S. Datta, A. Ghosh, M. Paullson, F. Zahhid

Eric Polizzi

We investigate the origin of asymmetry in various measured current-voltage (I-V) characteristics of molecules with no inherent spatial asymmetry, with particular focus on a recent break junction measurement. We argue that such asymmetry arises due to unequal coupling with the contacts and a consequent difference in charging effects, which can only be captured in a self-consistent model for molecular conduction. The direction of the asymmetry depends on the sign of the majority carriers in the molecule. For conduction through highest occupied molecular orbitals (i.e., HOMO or p-type conduction), the current is smaller for positive voltage on the stronger contact, while …

A Method Of Minimizing The Power Losses In An Induction Motor With A Squirrel-Cage With Vector Control, Boukhemis Chetate, Aissa Kheldoun

Boukhemis Chetate

An approach to optimizing the flux linkage of the rotor of an induction motor is considered when the motor operates in a vector control mode with indirect orientation in the direction of the field. In this system, the expression for the frequency of the rotor e.m.f. contains the rotor winding impedance; this impedance must therefore be precisely estimated in real time. It is proposed that this should be done using a fuzzy-logic adaptation mechanism. The results of using such a mechanism in a physical model confirm its effectiveness. Key words: induction motor, rotor, vector control, fuzzy logic.

Pulse Multiplication In Forced-Commutated Current Source Converters By Dc Ripple Reinjection, J. Arrillaga, N. R. Watson, Lasantha B. Perera, Y. H. Liu Sep 2004

Pulse Multiplication In Forced-Commutated Current Source Converters By Dc Ripple Reinjection, J. Arrillaga, N. R. Watson, Lasantha B. Perera, Y. H. Liu

Lasantha Bernard Perera

A dc-ripple reinjection scheme is described that doubles the number of pulses of the forcecommutated current source converter. The reinjection circuit includes a feedback converter in series with the dc output which provides automatic adjustment of the reinjected current as the dc side current changes. The reinjection concept is also generalised to produce pulse multiplication.

Most signal processing involves processing a signal without concern for the quality or information content of that signal. In speech processing, speech is processed on a frame-by-frame basis, usually only with concern that the frame is either speech or silence. However, knowing how reliable the information is in a frame of speech can be very important and useful. This is where usable speech detection and extraction can play a very important role. The usable speech frames can be defined as frames of speech that contain higher information content compared to unusable frames with reference to a particular application. We have …

Robust Speaker Verification With Principal Pitch Components, Robert M. Nickel, Sachin P. Oswal, Ananth N. Iyer Sep 2004

Robust Speaker Verification With Principal Pitch Components, Robert M. Nickel, Sachin P. Oswal, Ananth N. Iyer

Ananth N Iyer

We are presenting a new method that improves the accuracy of text dependent speaker identification systems. The new method exploits a set of novel speech features that is derived from a principal component analysis (PC) of voiced speech segments. The new PC features are only weakly correlated with the corresponding cepstral features. A distance measure that combines both, cepstral and PC pitch features provides a discriminative power that cannot be achieved with cepstral features alone. It is well known that the discriminative power of cepstral features declines if the dimensionality of the feature space is increased beyond its optimal value. …

Sequential K-Nn Pattern Recognition For Usable Speech Classification, Jashmin K. Shah, Brett Y. Smolenski, Robert E. Yantorno, Ananth N. Iyer

Ananth N Iyer

The accuracy of speech processing techniques degrades when operating in a co-channel environment. Co-channel speech occurs when more than one person is talking at the same time. The idea of usable speech segmentation is to identify and extract those portions of co-channel speech that are minimally degraded but still useful for speech processing application such as speaker identification. Usable speech measures are features that are extracted from the co-channel signal to distinguish between usable and unusable speech. In this paper, a new usable speech extraction technique is presented. The new method extracts features recursively and variable length segmentation is performed …

A Generalized Neuron Based Pss In A Multi-Machine Power System, D. K. Chaturvedi, O. P. Malik, P. K. Kalra

D. K. Chaturvedi Dr.

An artificial neural network can work as an intelligent controller for nonlinear dynamic systems through learning, as it can easily accommodate the nonlinearities and time dependencies. In dealing with complex problems, most common neural networks have some drawbacks of large training time, large number of neurons and hidden layers. These drawbacks can be overcome by a nonlinear controller based on a generalized neuron (GN) which retains the quick response of neural net. Results of studies with a GN-based power system stabilizer on a five-machine power system show that it can provide good damping over a wide operating range and significantly …

Applications Of Generalised Neural Network For Aircraft Landing Control System, D. K. Chaturvedi, R. Chauhan, P. K. Kalra

D. K. Chaturvedi Dr.

It is observed that landing performance is the most typical phase of an aircraft perfromance. During landing operation the stability and controllability are the major considerations. To achieve safe landing, an aircraft has to be controlled in such a way that its wheels touch the ground comfortably and gently within the paved surface of the runway. The conventional control theory found very successful in solving well defined problems, which are described precisely with definite and clearly mentioned boundaries. In real life systems the boundaries can't be defined clearly and conventional controller does not give satisfactory results. Whenever, an aircraft deviates …

Irregular Repeat-Accumulate Codes For Volume Holographic Memory Systems, Hossein Pishro-Nik, Faramarz Fekri Sep 2004

Irregular Repeat-Accumulate Codes For Volume Holographic Memory Systems, Hossein Pishro-Nik, Faramarz Fekri

Hossein Pishro-Nik

We investigate the application of irregular repeat-accumulate (IRA) codes in volume holographic memory (VHM) systems. We introduce methodologies to design efficient IRA codes. We show that a judiciously designed IRA code for a typical VHM can be as good as the optimized irregular low-density-parity-check codes while having the additional advantage of lower encoding complexity. Moreover, we present a method to reduce the error-floor effect of the IRA codes in the VHM systems. This method explores the structure of the noise pattern in holographic memories. Finally, we explain why IRA codes are good candidates for the VHM systems.

Multidimensional Digital Signal Estimation Using Kalman's Theory For Computer-Aided Applications, Ivan E. Villalon-Turrubiates, Jose A. Andrade-Lucio, Oscar G. Ibarra-Manzano Jul 2004

Multidimensional Digital Signal Estimation Using Kalman's Theory For Computer-Aided Applications, Ivan E. Villalon-Turrubiates, Jose A. Andrade-Lucio, Oscar G. Ibarra-Manzano

Iván Esteban Villalón Turrubiates

In this paper, we analyze the Multidimensional Kalman Algorithm to estimate a signal corrupted by white Gaussian noise. Because the theory provide a good solution to the problem with a large number of signals, we developed an algorithm for three-dimensional Kalman filtering applied to the positioning problem (latitude, altitude and longitude) of a stationary object based on GPS signals. This application was selected because the incoming signals of the GPS encounters some noise on its way to the receiver, which is originated from different types of sources, the consequences are that the received signals are noisy, therefore inaccurate. The signals …

Experimental Studies Of Generalized Neuron Based Power System Stabilizer, D. K. Chaturvedi, O. P. Malik, P. K. Kalra

D. K. Chaturvedi Dr.

Artificial neural networks (ANNs) can be used as intelligent controllers to control nonlinear, dynamic systems through learning, which can easily accommodate the nonlinearities and time dependencies. However, they require large training time and large number of neurons to deal with complex problems. To overcome these drawbacks, a generalized neuron (GN) has been developed that requires much smaller training data and shorter training time. Taking benefit of these characteristics of the GN, a new power system stabilizer (PSS) is proposed. Results show that the proposed GN-based PSS can provide a consistently good dynamic performance of the system over a wide range …

Scatterer Size Estimation In Pulse-Echo Ultrasound Using Focused Sources: Calibration Measurements And Phantom Experiments, Timothy A. Bigelow, William D. O'Brien Jul 2004

Scatterer Size Estimation In Pulse-Echo Ultrasound Using Focused Sources: Calibration Measurements And Phantom Experiments, Timothy A. Bigelow, William D. O'Brien

Timothy A. Bigelow

In a companion paper [T. A. Bigelow and W. D. O'Brien Jr., J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 116, 578 (2004)], theory, supported by simulations, showed that accurate scatterer size estimates could be obtained using highly focused sources provided that the derived generalized attenuation-compensation function was used and the velocity potential field near the focus could be approximated as a three-dimensional Gaussian. Herein, the theory is further evaluated via experimental studies. A calibration technique is developed to find the necessary equivalent Gaussian dimensions for a focused source using reflections obtained from a rigid plane scanned through the focus. Then, the theoretical analysis …

Scatterer Size Estimation In Pulse-Echo Ultrasound Using Focused Sources: Theoretical Approximations And Simulation Analysis, Timothy A. Bigelow, William D. O'Brien Jul 2004

Scatterer Size Estimation In Pulse-Echo Ultrasound Using Focused Sources: Theoretical Approximations And Simulation Analysis, Timothy A. Bigelow, William D. O'Brien

Timothy A. Bigelow

The speckle in ultrasound images has long been thought to contain information related to the tissue microstructure. Many different investigators have analyzed the frequency characteristics of the backscattered signals to estimate the scatterer acoustic concentration and size. Previous work has been mostly restricted to unfocused or weakly focused ultrasound sources, thus limiting its implementation with diagnostically relevant fields. Herein, we derive equations capable of estimating the size of a-scatterer for any reasonably focused source provided that the velocity potential field in the focal region can be approximated as a three-dimensional Gaussian beam, scatterers are a sufficient distance from the source, …

Latching On The Wire And Pipelining In Nanoscale Designs, C. Andras Moritz, Teng Wang Jun 2004

Latching On The Wire And Pipelining In Nanoscale Designs, C. Andras Moritz, Teng Wang

C. Andras Moritz

In contrast to general-purpose programmable fabrics, such as PLAs, we develop nano-fabrics that, while also programmable and hierarchical, are more tuned towards an application domain. Our goal is to achieve denser designs with better fabric utilization and efficient cascading of circuits. We call these designs NASICs: Nanoscale Application-Specific Integrated Circuits. We believe NASICs are a more natural fit to implement microprocessors, out of semiconductor nanowires and crossed carbon nanotubes, than PLA style designs. A key challenge in nanoscale designs in general is to preserve the density advantages of the fabric once topological, interconnect, and faulttolerance constraints are considered. In this …

The Technical Requirements For Multichannel Qam Rf Modulators, Ron D. Katznelson May 2004

The Technical Requirements For Multichannel Qam Rf Modulators, Ron D. Katznelson

Ron D. Katznelson

This paper addresses the technical requirements and implications for multichannel QAM RF modulators and upconverters and the factors that affect their proposed RF specifications. RF output power levels per channel, adjacent channel noise and broadband noise levels of such a class of multichannel modulators will be discussed. A spectral noise specification mask that is equivalent to that obtained from a combination of multiple identical masks of a standard single channel noise specifications based on power addition will be presented. The power back-off required for maintaining the proposed distortion mask levels as a function of the number of adjacent channels supported …

Usable Speech Detection Using A Context Dependent Gaussian Mixture Model Classifier, Robert E. Yantorno, Brett Y. Smolenski, Ananth N. Iyer, Jashmin K. Shah May 2004

Usable Speech Detection Using A Context Dependent Gaussian Mixture Model Classifier, Robert E. Yantorno, Brett Y. Smolenski, Ananth N. Iyer, Jashmin K. Shah

Ananth N Iyer

Speech that is corrupted by nonstationary interference, but contains segments that are still usable for applications such as speaker identification or speech recognition, is referred to as "usable" speech. A common example of nonstationary interference occurs when there is more than one person talking at the same time, which is known as co-channel speech. In general the above speech processing applications do not work in co-channel environments; however, they can work on the extracted usable segments. Unfortunately, currently available usable speech measures only detect about 75% of the total available usable speech. The first reason for this high error stems …

A Three-Dimensional Quantum Simulation Of Silicon Nanowire Transistors With The Effective Mass Approximation, Eric Polizzi, J. Wang, M. Lundstrom May 2004

A Three-Dimensional Quantum Simulation Of Silicon Nanowire Transistors With The Effective Mass Approximation, Eric Polizzi, J. Wang, M. Lundstrom

Eric Polizzi

The silicon nanowire transistor (SNWT) is a promising device structure for future integrated circuits, and simulations will be important for understanding its device physics and assessing its ultimate performance limits. In this work, we present a three-dimensional (3D) quantum mechanical simulation approach to treat various SNWTs within the effective-mass approximation. We begin by assuming ballistic transport, which gives the upper performance limit of the devices. The use of a mode space approach (either coupled or uncoupled) produces high computational efficiency that makes our 3D quantum simulator practical for extensive device simulation and design. Scattering in SNWTs is then treated by …

A Case For Including Harmonic Distortion Components In Docsis’ Rf Specifications For Non Aggregating Spurious Components, Ron D. Katznelson

Ron D. Katznelson

This note is submitted in support of a change in DOCSIS specifications for spurious performance. It shows that the impact of a proposed change is negligible and that the advantages far outweigh the perceived disadvantages of adopting such a change.

Improved Generalized Neuron Model For Short Term Load Forecasting, D. K. Chaturvedi, Ravindra Kumar, P. K. Kalra

D. K. Chaturvedi Dr.

The conventional neural networks consisting of simple neuron models have various drawbacks like large training time for complex problems, huge data requirement to train non linear complex problems, unknown ANN structure, the relatively larger number of hidden nodes required, problem of local minima etc. To make the Artificial Neural Network more efficient and to overcome the above-mentioned problems the new improved generalized neuron model is proposed in this work. The proposed neuron models have both summation and product as aggregation function. The generalized neuron models have flexibility at both the aggregation and activation function level to cope with the non-linearity …

Ultra-Wideband (Uwb) Communications: New Paradigms And Opportunities, Robert H. Morelos-Zaragoza

Robert Henry Morelos-Zaragoza

In this talk, the unique characteristics of ultra wideband (UWB) communications systems are introduced. Receiver design considerations are presented. Focus is on the relation between the symbol duration and the delay spread of the channel. This determines whether the receiver should use a Rake receiver (Spread-spectrum system) or an equalizer (multiple carrier or OFDM system).

Design Of Multiple Facts Controllers For Damping Inter-Area Oscillations: A Decentralized Control Approach, Arturo Roman Messina

A. R. Messina

In this paper, a frequency-domain methodology based on decentralised control theory is proposed to co-ordinate multiple FACTS controllers as well as to minimise the potential for adverse interaction between control loops. First, the concept of dynamic loop interaction in multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) control systems is introduced. Using the notion of a generalised dynamic relative gain in decentralised control systems, a method is then proposed to determine the best pairing of inputs and outputs for the design of MIMO systems. Finally, a residue-based method is adopted to tune system controllers. The design methodology is tested on a 6-area, 130-machine and 351- …
