According to the Bioenergy Technologies Office (BETO), creating a robust next-generation domestic bioenergy industry is an essential pathway for providing sustainable renewable energy alternatives. Using non-food feedstocks, like corn-stover and forest residue, in the biorefineries doesn't affect the food supply chain. In the commercial-scale bioenergy operations, a significant development in the technological advancements is required to determine the biomass feedstock quality at the preprocessing stage. The penetrating ability of the x-rays helps study the big biomass bales, but the feedstock heterogeneity—physical size, shape, and chemical composition—poses a significant challenge during milling, conveyance, feeding, and biofuel conversion processes. The inherent complexity …

Machine Learning And Image Processing For Noise Removal And Robust Edge Detection In The Presence Of Mixed Noise, Mehdi Mafi Oct 2019

Machine Learning And Image Processing For Noise Removal And Robust Edge Detection In The Presence Of Mixed Noise, Mehdi Mafi

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The central goal of this dissertation is to design and model a smoothing filter based on the random single and mixed noise distribution that would attenuate the effect of noise while preserving edge details. Only then could robust, integrated and resilient edge detection methods be deployed to overcome the ubiquitous presence of random noise in images. Random noise effects are modeled as those that could emanate from impulse noise, Gaussian noise and speckle noise.

In the first step, evaluation of methods is performed based on an exhaustive review on the different types of denoising methods which focus on impulse noise, …

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications

Computer vision systems have the potential to provide automated, non-invasive monitoring of livestock animals, however, the lack of public datasets with well-defined targets and evaluation metrics presents a significant challenge for researchers. Consequently, existing solutions often focus on achieving task-specific objectives using relatively small, private datasets. This work introduces a new dataset and method for instance-level detection of multiple pigs in group-housed environments. The method uses a single fully-convolutional neural network to detect the location and orientation of each animal, where both body part locations and pairwise associations are represented in the image space. Accompanying this method is a new …

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications

Railyards are one of the most challenging and complex workplace environments in any industry. Railyard workers are constantly surrounded by dangerous moving objects, in a noisy environment where distractions can easily result in accidents or casualties. Throughout the years, yards have been contributing 20–30% of the total accidents that happen in railroads. Monitoring the railyard workspace to keep personnel safe from falls, slips, being struck by large object, etc. and preventing fatal accidents can be particularly challenging due to the sheer number of factors involved, such as the need to protect a large geographical space, the inherent dynamicity of the …

Convolutional Neural Network Based Localized Classification Of Uterine Cervical Cancer Digital Histology Images, Haidar A. Almubarak, R. Joe Stanley, Rodney Long, Sameer Antani, George Thoma, Rosemary Zuna, Shelliane R. Frazier

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In previous research, we introduced an automated localized, fusion-based algorithm to classify squamous epithelium into Normal, CIN1, CIN2, and CIN3 grades of cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN). The approach partitioned the epithelium into 10 segments. Image processing and machine vision algorithms were used to extract features from each segment. The features were then used to classify the segment and the result was fused to classify the whole epithelium. This research extends the previous research by dividing each of the 10 segments into 3 parts and uses a convolutional neural network to classify the 3 parts. The result is then fused to …

Image Processing With Dipole-Coupled Nanomagnets: Noise Suppression And Edge Enhancement Detection, Md Ahsanul Abeed, Ayan Kumar Biswas, Mamun Al-Rashid, Jayasimha Atulasimha, Supriyo Bandyopadhyay

Electrical and Computer Engineering Publications

Hardware-based image processing offers speed and convenience not found in software-centric approaches. Here, we show theoretically that a 2-D periodic array of dipole-coupled elliptical nanomagnets, delineated on a piezoelectric substrate, can act as a dynamical system for specific image processing functions. Each nanomagnet has two stable magnetization states that encode pixel color (black or white). An image containing black and white pixels is first converted to voltage states and then mapped into the magnetization states of a nanomagnet array with magneto-tunneling junctions (MTJs). The same MTJs are employed to read out the processed pixel colors later. Dipole interaction between the …

Unequal A Priori Probability Multiple Hypothesis Testing In Space Domain Awareness With The Space Surveillance Telescope, Tyler J. Hardy, Stephen C. Cain, Travis F. Blake Jan 2016

Unequal A Priori Probability Multiple Hypothesis Testing In Space Domain Awareness With The Space Surveillance Telescope, Tyler J. Hardy, Stephen C. Cain, Travis F. Blake

Faculty Publications

This paper investigates the ability to improve Space Domain Awareness (SDA) by increasing the number of detectable Resident Space Objects (RSOs) from space surveillance sensors. With matched filter based techniques, the expected impulse response, or Point Spread Function (PSF), is compared against the received data. In the situation where the images are spatially undersampled, the modeled PSF may not match the received data if the RSO does not fall in the center of the pixel. This aliasing can be accounted for with a Multiple Hypothesis Test (MHT). Previously, proposed MHTs have implemented a test with an equal a priori prior …

Filters And Matrix Factorization, Myung-Sin Song, Palle E. T. Jorgensen

SIUE Faculty Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity

We give a number of explicit matrix-algorithms for analysis/synthesis

in multi-phase filtering; i.e., the operation on discrete-time signals which

allow a separation into frequency-band components, one for each of the

ranges of bands, say N , starting with low-pass, and then corresponding

filtering in the other band-ranges. If there are N bands, the individual

filters will be combined into a single matrix action; so a representation of

the combined operation on all N bands by an N x N matrix, where the

corresponding matrix-entries are periodic functions; or their extensions to

functions of a complex variable. Hence our setting entails …

Graphical Image Classification Combining An Evolutionary Algorithm And Binary Particle Swarm Optimization, Beibei Cheng, Renzhong Wang, Sameer K. Antani, R. Joe Stanley, George R. Thoma

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Biomedical journal articles contain a variety of image types that can be broadly classified into two categories: regular images, and graphical images. Graphical images can be further classified into four classes: diagrams, statistical figures, flow charts, and tables. Automatic figure type identification is an important step toward improved multimodal (text + image) information retrieval and clinical decision support applications. This paper describes a feature-based learning approach to automatically identify these four graphical figure types. We apply Evolutionary Algorithm (EA), Binary Particle Swarm Optimization (BPSO) and a hybrid of EA and BPSO (EABPSO) methods to select an optimal subset of extracted …

Mathematical Model Development Of Super-Resolution Image Wiener Restoration, Amr H. Yousef, Jiang Li, Mohammad A. Karim

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

In super-resolution (SR), a set of degraded low-resolution (LR) images are used to reconstruct a higher-resolution image that suffers from acquisition degradations. One way to boost SR images visual quality is to use restoration filters to remove reconstructed images artifacts. We propose an efficient method to optimally allocate the LR pixels on the high-resolution grid and introduce a mathematical derivation of a stochastic Wiener filter. It relies on the continuous-discrete-continuous model and is constrained by the periodic and nonperiodic interrelationships between the different frequency components of the proposed SR system. We analyze an end-to-end model and formulate the Wiener filter …

Fast Stochastic Wiener Filter For Super-Resolution Image Restoration With Information Theoretic Visual Quality Assessment, Amr Hussein Yousef, Jiang Li, Mohammad Karim, Mark Allen Neifeld (Ed.), Amit Ashok (Ed.)

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

Super-resolution (SR) refers to reconstructing a single high resolution (HR) image from a set of subsampled, blurred and noisy low resolution (LR) images. The reconstructed image suffers from degradations such as blur, aliasing, photo-detector noise and registration and fusion error. Wiener filter can be used to remove artifacts and enhance the visual quality of the reconstructed images. In this paper, we introduce a new fast stochastic Wiener filter for SR reconstruction and restoration that can be implemented efficiently in the frequency domain. Our derivation depends on the continuous-discrete-continuous (CDC) model that represents most of the degradations encountered during the image-gathering …

Enhancement Of Historical Printed Document Images By Combining Total Variation Regularization And Non-Local Means Filtering, Laurence Likforman-Sulem, Jérôme Darbon, Elisa H. Barney Smith Apr 2011

Enhancement Of Historical Printed Document Images By Combining Total Variation Regularization And Non-Local Means Filtering, Laurence Likforman-Sulem, Jérôme Darbon, Elisa H. Barney Smith

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

This paper proposes a novel method for document enhancement which combines two recent powerful noise-reduction steps. The first step is based on the total variation framework. It flattens background grey-levels and produces an intermediate image where background noise is considerably reduced. This image is used as a mask to produce an image with a cleaner background while keeping character details. The second step is applied to the cleaner image and consists of a filter based on non-local means: character edges are smoothed by searching for similar patch images in pixel neighborhoods. The document images to be enhanced are real historical …

A Mask-Based Enhancement Method For Historical Documents, Elisa H. Barney Smith, Jerôme Darbon, Laurence Likforman-Sulem

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

This paper proposes a novel method for document enhancement. The method is based on the combination of two state-of-the-art filters through the construction of a mask. The mask is applied to a TV (Total Variation) -regularized image where background noise has been reduced. The masked image is then filtered by NLmeans (Non-Local Means) which reduces the noise in the text areas located by the mask. The document images to be enhanced are real historical documents from several periods which include several defects in their background. These defects result from scanning, paper aging and bleed-through. We observe the improvement of this …

Novel Wavelength Diversity Technique For High-Speed Atmospheric Turbulence Compensation, William W. Arrasmith, Sean F. Sullivan

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Faculty Publications

The defense, intelligence, and homeland security communities are driving a need for software dominant, real-time or near-real time atmospheric turbulence compensated imagery. The development of parallel processing capabilities are finding application in diverse areas including image processing, target tracking, pattern recognition, and image fusion to name a few. A novel approach to the computationally intensive case of software dominant optical and near infrared imaging through atmospheric turbulence is addressed in this paper. Previously, the somewhat conventional wavelength diversity method has been used to compensate for atmospheric turbulence with great success. We apply a new correlation based approach to the wavelength …

Live Wire Segmentation Tool For Osteophyte Detection In Lumbar Spine X-Ray Images, Santosh Seetharaman, R. Joe Stanley, Soumya De, Sameer Antani, L. Rodney Long, George R. Thoma

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Computer-assisted vertebra segmentation in x-ray images is a challenging problem. Inter-subject variability and the generally poor contrast of digitized radiograph images contribute to the segmentation difficulty. In this paper, a semi-automated live wire approach is investigated for vertebrae segmentation. The live wire approach integrates initially selected user points with dynamic programming to generate a closed vertebra boundary. In order to assess the degree to which vertebra features are conserved using the live wire technique, convex hull-based features to characterize anterior osteophytes in lumbar vertebrae are determined for live wire and manually segmented vertebrae. Anterior osteophyte discrimination was performed over 405 …

Parallel Implementation Of High-Speed, Phase Diverse Atmospheric Turbulence Compensation Method On A Neural Network-Based Architecture, William W. Arrasmith, Sean F. Sullivan

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Faculty Publications

Phase diversity imaging methods work well in removing atmospheric turbulence and some system effects from predominantly near-field imaging systems. However, phase diversity approaches can be computationally intensive and slow. We present a recently adapted, high-speed phase diversity method using a conventional, software-based neural network paradigm. This phase-diversity method has the advantage of eliminating many time consuming, computationally heavy calculations and directly estimates the optical transfer function from the entrance pupil phases or phase differences. Additionally, this method is more accurate than conventional Zernike-based, phase diversity approaches and lends itself to implementation on parallel software or hardware architectures. We use computer …

Direct, Object Brightness Estimation From Atmospheric Turbulence Degraded Images Using A New, High-Speed, Modified Phase Diversity Method, William W. Arrasmith

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Faculty Publications

The well known phase diversity technique has long been used as a premier passive imaging method to mitigate the degrading effects of atmospheric turbulence on incoherent optical imagery. Typically, an iterative, slow method is applied that uses the Zernike basis set and 2-D Fourier transforms in the reconstruction process. In this paper, we demonstrate a direct method for estimating the un-aberrated object brightness from phase or phase difference estimates that 1) does not require the use of the Zernike basis set or the intermediate determination of the generalized pupil function, 2) directly determines the optical transfer function without the requirement …

Unconventional Optical Imaging Using A High Speed, Neural Network Based Smart Sensor, William W. Arrasmith

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Faculty Publications

The advancement of neural network methods and technologies is finding applications in many fields and disciplines of interest to the defense, intelligence, and homeland security communities. Rapidly reconfigurable sensors for real or near-real time signal or image processing can be used for multi-functional purposes such as image compression, target tracking, image fusion, edge detection, thresholding, pattern recognition, and atmospheric turbulence compensation to name a few. A neural network based smart sensor is described that can accomplish these tasks individually or in combination, in real-time or near real-time. As a computationally intensive example, the case of optical imaging through volume turbulence …

Data Smoothing And Interpolation Using Eighth-Order Algebraic Splines, Daniel J. Simon Apr 2004

Data Smoothing And Interpolation Using Eighth-Order Algebraic Splines, Daniel J. Simon

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

A new type of algebraic spline is used to derive a filter for smoothing or interpolating discrete data points. The spline is dependent on control parameters that specify the relative importance of data fitting and the derivatives of the spline. A general spline of arbitrary order is first formulated using matrix equations. We then focus on eighth-order splines because of the continuity of their first three derivatives (desirable for motor and robotics applications). The spline's matrix equations are rewritten to give a recursive filter that can be implemented in real time for lengthy data sequences. The filter is lowpass with …

Virtual laboratory experiments can be cost effective, convenient instructional resources that have appeal to a wide range of learning styles. Expensive, time-consuming laboratory tests can be experienced repeatedly and remotely using interactive simulations and original video footage or animations. A virtual experiment can incorporate meaningful exercises, procedural options, and background hyperlinks to create a comprehensive "hands on" environment. Also, it may be used as preliminary training for the actual experiment.

An interactive LabVIEW-based laboratory for a load test simulation of an existing demonstration bridge was created. This smart truss bridge is instrumented with fiber optic strain sensors situated on the …

Neural Networks Versus Nonparametric Neighbor-Based Classifiers For Semisupervised Classification Of Landsat Thematic Mapper Imagery, Perry J. Hardin Jul 2000

Neural Networks Versus Nonparametric Neighbor-Based Classifiers For Semisupervised Classification Of Landsat Thematic Mapper Imagery, Perry J. Hardin

Faculty Publications

Semisupervised classification is one approach to converting multiband optical and infrared imagery into landcover maps. First, a sample of image pixels is extracted and clustered into several classes. The analyst next combines the clusters by hand to create a smaller set of groups that correspond to a useful landcover classification. The remaining image pixels are then assigned to one of the aggregated cluster groups by use of a per-pixel classifier. Since the cluster aggregation process frequently creates groups with multivariate shapes ill suited for parametric classifiers, there has been renewed interest in nonparametric methods for the task. This research reports …

Joint-Transform Correlator Architecture For Wavelet Feature Extraction, Samuel Peter Kozaitis, Mark A. Getbehead, Wesley E. Foor

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Faculty Publications

A version of an image consisting of multiple wavelet scales allows for more flexible feature extraction when compared to the use of one wavelet scale. We proposed an imaging system based on a multiple-input joint-transform correlator, that could be used for multiple wavelet-scale analysis of an input image. Given a single input image and wavelet, for m wavelet scales, m versions of the wavelet and m copies of the input image were generated using conventional optics that are used as inputs to a joint wavelet-transform correlator. The output consisted of 4 m - 1 correlation results, one of which is …
