An Improved Particle Swarm Optimization Based Maximum Power Point Tracking Strategy With Variable Sampling Time Jan 2015

An Improved Particle Swarm Optimization Based Maximum Power Point Tracking Strategy With Variable Sampling Time

Faculty of Engineering University of Malaya

This paper presents an improved maximum power point tracking (MPPT) strategy for photovoltaic (PV) systems based on particle swarm optimization (PSO). The capability of the PSO algorithm to cope with partially shaded conditions (PSCs) is the primary motivation of this research. Unlike conventional PSO-based MPPT systems, a variable sampling time strategy (VSTS) based on the investigation of the dynamic behavior of converter current is deployed to increase system tracking time. The performance of the proposed system is evaluated using MATLAB simulation and experimentation, in which a digital signal controller is used to implement the proposed algorithm on a real boost …

A Review Of Safety, Health And Environmental (She) Issues Of Solar Energy System Jan 2015

A Review Of Safety, Health And Environmental (She) Issues Of Solar Energy System

Faculty of Engineering University of Malaya

Solar energy is one of the cleanest forms of energy sources and considered as a green source of energy. Solar energy benefit ranges from low carbon emission, no fossil fuel requirement, long term solar resources, less payback time and other. However like other power generation sources, solar energy has also some Safety, Health and Environmental (SHE) concerns. This paper presents the overview of solar energy technologies and addresses the SHE impact of solar energy technologies to the sustainability of human activities. This paper will also recommend the possible ways to reduce the effect of potential hazards of widespread use of …

A Shade Tolerant Panel Design For Thin Film Photovoltaics, Sourabh Dongaonkar, Muhammad Alam Mar 2013

A Shade Tolerant Panel Design For Thin Film Photovoltaics, Sourabh Dongaonkar, Muhammad Alam

Sourabh Dongaonkar

We analyze the problem of partial shading of thin film photovoltaic (TFPV) panels, using full two dimensional circuit simulations. By accounting for the panel structure and typical array configurations, we can accurately account for the effect of various shading configurations at the cell and panel level. We demonstrate the limitation of external bypass diodes in protecting shaded cells from reverse breakdown, and explore the whole range of shading scenarios and their impact on reverse stress experienced by shaded cells. Based on the analysis, we identify the key aspects of shading problem, and formulate design rules for shadow aware geometrical design …

Optimal Control Of A Grid Connected Photovoltaic System With Constant Switching Frequency, Djamila Rekioua Pr Feb 2013

Optimal Control Of A Grid Connected Photovoltaic System With Constant Switching Frequency, Djamila Rekioua Pr

REKIOUA Djamila Dr

This paper presents maximum power point tracking (MPPT) algorithms for grid connected photovoltaic system. Due to the instantaneous changing of solar irradiance and temperature, it is desirable to determine the optimal voltage that ensures maximum energy yield. In order to optimize the photovoltaic energy generation, the MPPT is integrated in the inverter control. Perturb & Observ (P&O), Incremental Conductance (Inc Cond) techniques and fuzzy logic controller (FLC) are applied. A comparison shows the effectiveness of the FLC. The maximum power generated by the photovoltaic system is sent to the power grid to be consumed by the nearest customers. A constant …

Point Of Common Coupling (Pcc) Voltage Control Of A Grid-Connected Solar Photovoltaic (Pv) System, Brian Perera, Philip Ciufo, Sarath Perera Dec 2012

Point Of Common Coupling (Pcc) Voltage Control Of A Grid-Connected Solar Photovoltaic (Pv) System, Brian Perera, Philip Ciufo, Sarath Perera

Dr Philip Ciufo

In future low voltage grids, with multiple inverter interfaced sources connected, voltage regulation may become a necessary task. The potential exists for inverter interfaced sources to be deployed to regulate the voltage at the point of common coupling (PCC) of each inverter interfaced sources. The PCC voltage regulation is attainable with inverter interfaced sources by dynamically controlling the amount of reactive power injected to the power distribution grid by individual systems. In the current research, a closed-loop controller is proposed to regulate the PCC voltage of a solar photovoltaic (PV) system that is connected to a single-phase power distribution feeder …
