Thin absorbing layers containing magnetic alloy or ferrite inclusions can be effectively used for attenuating common-mode currents on extended structures, such as power cords, cables, or edge-coupled microstrip lines. An analytical model to evaluate attenuation on the coaxial line with the central conductor coated with a magneto-dielectric layer is proposed and validated by the experiments and numerical modeling. The analytical model is validated using available magneto-dielectric samples of different thicknesses. This model can serve for comparing and predicting the absorptive properties of different samples of magneto-dielectric materials, whose compositions may be unknown, but dielectric and magnetic properties can be determined …

A Stabilizing, High-Performance Controller For Input Series-Output Parallel Converters, Jonathan W. Kimball, Joseph T. Mossoba, Philip T. Krein

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A form of sensorless current mode (SCM) control stabilizes sharing in multiphase input-series-output-parallel (ISOP) dc-dc converter topologies. Previously, ISOP converters have been proposed to reduce the voltage and current ratings of switching devices. Since the inputs are all connected in series, each phase need only be rated for a fraction of the total input voltage. Voltage and current sharing are key - if there is any phase-to-phase imbalance, the system benefits are substantially reduced. In the present work, a simple SCM controller is shown to guarantee stable sharing. Each phase acts independently on the same output reference and desired input …

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper proposes a new precise macro-modeling for leakage current in BSIM4 65nm technology considering subthreshold leakage, gate tunneling leakage, stack effect, and fanout effect. Using the accurate macro-model, a heuristic algorithm is developed to estimate the leakage power and generate input test pattern for minimum leakage. The algorithm applies to ISCAS85 benchmark circuits, and the results are compared with the results of Hspice. The experimental result shows that the leakage power estimation using our macro-model is within 5% difference when comparing to Hspice results.

A numerical technique to analyze shielding effectiveness of sandwiched FSS-composite structures is proposed. This technique is based on using a dispersive FDTD method in conjuncture with a novel periodic boundary condition to model sandwiched FSS-composite elements. Results show that by inserting single or multilayered FSS elements into composite materials, better shielding effectiveness can be achieved.

A statistical cable harness model is developed to account for the random disturbance of the wire positions along hand-assembled bundles. The non-uniform random bundles are modeled as n-cascaded segments of uniform multi-conductor transmission line. At each section, all wire positions are disturbed with random numbers obeying a Gaussian distribution. In addition, a spline interpolation function is used to improve the smoothness of wires winding along the bundle. The common-mode current distribution along the bundle calculated with SPICE is injected into a full-wave tool, e.g., FDTD, as impressed current sources. Thus, the full-vehicle electromagnetic emissions from the automotive harness can …

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Space Shuttle Columbia's catastrophic failure, the separation of a piece of spray-on-foam insulation (SOFI) from the external tank (ET) in the Space Shuttle Discovery's flight in 2005 and crack detected in its ET foam prior to its successful launch in 2006 emphasize the need for effective nondestructive methods for inspecting the shuttle ET SOFI. Millimeter wave nondestructive testing methods have been considered as potential and effective inspection tools for evaluating the integrity of the SOFI. This paper presents recent results of an investigation for the purpose of detecting vertical cracks in SOFI panels using a focused millimeter wave (150 GHz) …

When the performances of the electronic technology increase (higher frequencies, more power, lover power supply, faster transistors, reduced chip dimensions), designing electronic equipment becomes more challenging for the electronic engineers. Signal and power integrity on board become of paramount importance. One of the main causes of board malfunctions and electromagnetic radiation is the simultaneous switching noise (SSN) due to the integrated circuits soldered on the board. The paper proposes two simple procedures to model the SSN, so to evaluate its effects in any point of the board.

Detection of chloride ingress and evaluation of its distribution and temporal movement in reinforced concrete structures is an important practical issue. Steel reinforcing bars embedded in good quality concrete are normally protected from corrosion. However, the presence of a sufficient concentration of free chloride ions in the region of the reinforcing steel can initiate the process of corrosion. Therefore, it is important to be able to detect ingress of chloride ions and their distribution in cement-based materials. Moreover, it is important to obtain this information nondestructively. In recent years, near-field microwave nondestructive evaluation methods, using open-ended rectangular waveguide probes, have …

A Three-Dimensional Fdtd Subgridding Method With Separate Spatial And Temporal Subgridding Interfaces, Kai Xiao, David Pommerenke, James L. Drewniak

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The idea of separating the spatial and temporal subgridding interfaces is introduced in this paper. Based on this idea, the spatial and temporal subgridding algorithms can be developed and analyzed separately. The spatial algorithm was given in the previous paper. In this paper, the temporal subgridding algorithm is described and the stability is illustrated by the analytical formulation of a one-dimensional model. An FDTD code that combines the spatial and temporal subgridding algorithms is implemented. Numerical test models are calculated to show the stability and accuracy of the proposed method.

This paper considers the case of a wide-band Lorentzian (WBL) algorithm in the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) modeling of dispersive media. It is shown herein that the WBL model is a physically meaningful and practically useful case of the frequency behavior of materials along with the Debye and narrow-band Lorentzian (NBL). The recursive convolution algorithms for the finite-difference time-domain technique for NBL and WBL models differ. The Debye model, which is suitable for comparatively low-frequency dispersive materials, may not have sufficient number of parameters for describing the wide-band material, especially if this material exhibits pronounced absorption at higher frequencies. It is …

Static And Quasi-Dynamic Load Balancing In Parallel Fdtd Codes For Signal Integrity, Power Integrity, And Packaging Applications, Sarah A. Seguin, Michael A. Cracraft, James L. Drewniak

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The Finite-Difference Time-Domain (FDTD) method is a robust technique for calculating electromagnetic fields, but practical problems, involving complex or large geometries, can require a long time to calculate on any one single-processor computer. One computer with many processors or many single-processor computers can reduce the computation time. However, some FDTD cell types, e.g., PML cells, require more computation time than others. Thus, the size and shape of the individual process allocations can significantly influence the computation time. This paper addresses these load balancing issues with static and quasi-dynamic approaches. The Message-Passing Interface (MPI) library is applied to a three-dimensional (3D) …

The EMC and signal integrity impact of printed circuit board (PCB) trace discontinuities, such as vias, where the signal is transitioned from one layer to another in the PCB stackup, have become significant recently with the use of very high speed signals in today''s systems. If these discontinuities are ignored, significant distortion of the high speed signal can occur, and in many cases, cause data errors. A fast and accurate technique to include the effect of via discontinuities in the typical design process is needed to ensure this distortion is considered if significant. Therefore, a simple equivalent circuit for the …

A Three-Dimensional Fdtd Subgridding Algorithm Based On Interpolation Of Current Density, Kai Xiao, David Pommerenke, James L. Drewniak

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A three-dimensional subgridding algorithm for the finite difference time domain (FDTD) method is proposed in this paper. The method is based on interpolation of electric and magnetic current densities. The coarse-fine mesh ratio can be either 1:2 or 1:3. Results of a test model utilizing a lossless cavity excited with a dipole show no tendency of instability after 500000 time steps. The reflection in time domain at the subgridding interface was calculated to test the accuracy of the subgridding algorithm.

A simple method of approximating frequency characteristics of composites in a form convenient for time-domain numerical modeling is proposed. The frequency characteristics can be obtained from experiment or calculations based on the Maxwell Garnett mixing formalism. The resultant frequency characteristic might be of a complex shape corresponding to a combination of a number of absorption peaks. The approximation is made by a series of Debye-like terms using a genetic algorithm (GA). This leads to the necessity of taking a number of terms in the approximating series. Every term corresponds to its pole, i.e., the frequency where the maximum loss occurs. …

Common-Mode Current Due To A Trace Near A Pcb Edge And Its Suppression By A Guard Band, Yoshiki Kayano, Motoshi Tanaka, James L. Drewniak, Hiroshi Inoue

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The common-mode (CM) current due to a trace near a printed circuit board (PCB) edge, and its suppression by a guard band have been studied experimentally and with finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) modeling. As the guard band, copper tape is connected along the entire edge of the ground plane. First, a PCB electromagnetic interference (EMI) coupling path that results from the nonzero impedance of the PCB ground plane is discussed. As the trace is moved closer to the PCB edge, the CM current increases. Then, the effect of the guard band on the CM current is detailed. A guard band parallel …

An integrated converter consists of converter sets; each converter set has a special function defined by the designer. A family of DC/DC Boost based integrated rectifiers with two active switches can be derived by the integration concept. In this paper, Boost + Push-Pull integrated converter is introduced and derived. To regulate the output voltage and shape the input current, a new simple digital control method is applied. Microstrip structures, formed by metal traces printed on a dielectric substrate above a reference plane, are frequently the object of electromagnetic modeling. In this paper, hybrid FEM/MoM formulations employing conventional Whitney elements and newly developed linear-tangent/linear-normal (LT/LN) tangential vector finite elements (TVFEs) are applied to the analysis of microstrip structures with thin traces. This paper shows that the variation of the electric field below the trace is a significant issue to be addressed in microstrip structure modeling. Different mesh methods are investigated and the advantages of the LT/LN TVFEs are discussed.

This paper presents a temporal model for the coverage achieved by software testing. The proposed model, which is applicable at any level of the testing hierarchy, can determine the value of test coverage at any given time, as well as predicting future values. The model is comprised of two main components: coverage functions, and the coverage matrix. The coverage functions represent the coverage of a single entity as a function of time and reflect the test environment through their stochastic parameters. The coverage matrix utilizes the coverage functions to depict the coverage attained for each entity by each test within …

A method to extract a lumped element prototype SPICE model is used to study noise coupling between non-parallel traces on a PCB. The parameters in this model are extracted using a PEEC-like approach, a Circuit Extraction approach based on a Mixed-Potential Integral Equation formulation (CEMPIE). Without large numbers of unknowns, the SPICE model saves computation time. Also, it is easy to incorporate into system SPICE net list to acquire the system simulation result considering the coupling between traces on the printed circuit board (PCB). A representative case is studied, and the comparison of measurements, CEMPIE simulation, and SPICE modeling are …

Experimental measurements and numerical modeling were used to study the EMI performance of a module-on-backplane connector for various configurations of signal-return pin-outs. A commercially available open-pin-field connector was used in these results to connect between the mother-board and the daughter-card. The experimental techniques, based on measuring |S21|, included both common-mode current measurements and monopole near-field probe measurements. The FDTD method was used to provide numerical support of the near-field measurements and generally agreed with the measured results for frequencies up to 3 GHz. The FDTD method was also used to investigate the relationship between the radiated EMI at …

Fdtd Modeling Of Lumped Ferrites, Min Li, Xiao Luo, James L. Drewniak May 2000

Fdtd Modeling Of Lumped Ferrites, Min Li, Xiao Luo, James L. Drewniak

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Implementing ferrites in finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) modeling requires special care because of the complex nature of the ferrite impedance. Considerable computational resources and time are required to directly implement a ferrite in the FDTD method. Fitting the ferrite impedance to an exponential series with the generalized-pencil-of-function (GPOF) method and using recursive convolution is an approach that minimizes the additional computational burden. An FDTD algorithm for a lumped ferrite using GPOF and recursive convolution is presented herein. Two different ferrite impedances in a test enclosure were studied experimentally to demonstrate the FDTD modeling approach. The agreement is generally good.

Emi Reduction From Airflow Aperture Arrays Using Dual-Perforated Screens And Loss, Min Li, Joe Nuebel, James L. Drewniak, Todd H. Hubing, Richard E. Dubroff, Thomas Van Doren

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Airflow perforations in shielding enclosures can act as apertures facilitating the coupling from internal sources to external electromagnetic interference (EMI). This EMI radiation for single- and dual-screen configurations was studied herein experimentally and with finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) modeling. A general EMI reduction of more than 20 dB was achieved for dual-perforated screens spaced 1 cm apart when compared to EMI for a single perforated screen. However, in the dual-screen case, the space between the screens can act as a thin cavity, which, in turn, can lead to significant radiation at distinct angles. Damping the resonances by loading the space between …

Modeling Emi Resulting From A Signal Via Transition Through Power/Ground Layers, Wei Cui, Xiaoning Ye, Bruce Archambeault, Doug White, Min Li, James L. Drewniak

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Signal transitioning through layers on vias are very common in multi-layer printed circuit board (PCB) design. For a signal via transitioning through the internal power and ground planes, the return current must switch from one reference plane to another reference plane. The discontinuity of the return current at the via excites the power and ground planes, and results in noise on the power bus that can lead to signal integrity, as well as EMI problems. Numerical methods, such as the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD), Moment of Methods (MoM), and partial element equivalent circuit (PEEC) method, were employed herein to study this …
