Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Conformal coatings are often applied to printed circuit boards to protect the board and its components from environmental factors like moisture, chemicals, and vibration. The impact of a conformal coating on crosstalk and radiated emissions was studied in the following paper. Two coating materials were characterized in terms of their permittivity and permeability. The impact of the conformal coating was evaluated based on the crosstalk between microstrip traces, the radiated emissions from a switch-mode power supply (SMPS), and on coupling from an EMI filter to nearby components. The coatings increased crosstalk between microstrip traces by up to 5 ~ 6 …

The analysis and the design of the Power Delivery Network (PDN) is crucial in the real world of high-speed and high-performance on-board systems. In this context, the Cavity Model (where facing portions of power bus are considered electromagnetic resonant cavities) can be used to study the generation and propagation of noise. Given a real-world board's layout, one of the primary requirements for the application of this technique is the geometrical identification of all the cavities and their connectivity. This paper is focused on the fully automatic generation of this geometrical dataset as part of an integrated tool for the analysis …

Models of integrated circuits (ICs) allow printed circuit board (PCB) developers to predict radiated and conducted emissions early in board development and allow IC manufactures insight into how to build their ICs better for electromagnetic compatibility (EMC). A model of the power delivery network, similar to the ICEM or LECCS model, was developed for a microcontroller running a typical program and used to predict the noise voltage between the power and return planes of a PCB. The IC and package model was generated using the Apache tool suite. A model of the PCB was created using an electromagnetic cavity model …

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Cavity model with segmentation method is extended to the analysis of radio frequency interference (RFI) problems in a shielding enclosure with printed circuit boards (PCBs) . Sixteen different Green's functions, instead of one in the conventional segmentation method developed for PCB cavities, are introduced to describe the fields in various cavities formed by enclosure walls and PCB copper planes. Both horizontal and vertical connections among these cavities are achieved by enforcing the boundary conditions along their common interfaces. Numerical examples demonstrate the efficiency and accuracy of the method by compared with full wave simulations.

Nowdays the fast and increased demand for bandwidth in the telecommunication world translates into the design of complex boards exchanging data at high bit rate in reduced design cycle. Sometimes it is impossible to spent time in setting pre-layout simulations, because they are not compatible with the design time schedule. In this scenario it is better to design the boards using experience and then make simulations in conjunction with measurements, using customized numerical tools which don't need complex models.

A statistical cable bundle model is developed to account for the random disturbance of the wire positions along hand-assembled cable bundles. The nonuniform random bundles are modeled as n-cascaded segments of a uniform multiconductor transmission line. At each section, all wire positions are disturbed with random numbers obeying a Gaussian distribution. In addition, a spline interpolation function is used to improve the continuity of wires winding along the bundle. The wire crosstalk and the common-mode (CM) current distribution along the bundle can be calculated with simulation program with integrated circuit emphasis (SPICE)-like solvers. By injecting the CM current along the …

This paper describes a methodology to extract effective electrical properties for periodic composite medium. The extraction algorithm is based on a periodic finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method. The results are compared with conventional mixing theories and 3D Fourier series expansion methods. Two results show satisfactory agreement. With the extracted effective permittivity and conductivity, one can readily use these parameters to study electrical properties of composite materials with arbitrary micro-geometry and the shielding effects of using composite materials.

Predictive Modeling Of The Effects Of Skew And Imbalance On Radiated Emi From Cables, J. Chen, James L. Drewniak, Richard E. Dubroff, James L. Knighten, Jun Fan, J. Flavin

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper provides an approach for predicting the effects of skew and imbalance on radiated emission of cables inside a commercial 19-inch rack-based cabinet. Scattering parameters (S-parameters) for two sets of cable assembly are measured with a four-port vector network analyzer (VNA) and converted into mixed mode S-parameters. Time-domain input signals with different slew rates and different amount of skew are transferred into frequency-domain using fast Fourier transform (FFT). The spectra of radiation emission associated with different inputs are then estimated.

Overdistention Operation Of Cascaded Multilevel Inverters, Xiaomin Kou, Keith Corzine, M. W. Wielebski

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In the past decade, the multilevel power converter has transitioned from an experimental concept to a standard product of many medium-voltage drive manufacturers. By utilizing small voltage steps, the multilevel topology offers higher power quality, higher voltage capability, lower switching losses, and improved electromagnetic compatibility over standard topologies. Recently, several researchers have focused on the cascaded multilevel inverter whereby two multilevel inverters are series connected to a motor load by splitting the neutral connection. The resulting performance is exceptional in terms of power quality since the overall number of voltage levels is effectively the product of the two cascaded inverters. …

Analytical Model For The Rectangular Power-Ground Structure Including Radiation Loss, Ji Chen, Todd H. Hubing, Weimin Shi, R. L. Chen

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

An accurate analytical model to predict via coupling within rectangular power-return plane structures is developed. Loss mechanisms, including radiation loss, dielectric loss, and conductor loss, are considered in this model. The radiation loss is incorporated into a complex propagating wavenumber as an artificial loss mechanism. The quality factors associated with three loss mechanisms are calculated and compared. The effects of radiation loss on input impedances and reflection coefficients are investigated for both high-dielectric-loss and low-dielectric-loss printed circuit boards. Measurements are performed to validate the effectiveness of this model.

Coupling between circuitry on printed circuit boards can be mitigated by a variety of well-known techniques. One such technique is to isolate circuitry in different areas of the printed circuit board by strategically placing a gap in the signal return plane. However, this technique is only effective at reducing common-impedance coupling, which is generally not a significant coupling mechanism at frequencies above 1 MHz. This paper investigates the effect of a gap located between and parallel to adjacent microstrip traces. The effect of the gap on the mutual inductance and mutual capacitance is evaluated. Laboratory measurements and numerical simulations show …

A dual-step MTL / FDTD strategy is proposed for anticipating full-vehicle level EMI. In the first step, the current distribution along a cable bundle connecting to electronic modules an an automotive platform is calculated using multi-conductor transmission-line (MTL) models. In order to account for common-mode discontinuities on the vehicle chassis, e.g., slots, 3D full-wave modeling (FDTD) is used to determine radiation impedances, which are thereafter incorporated in the MTL models for compensating the radiation power loss. In the second step, the obtained currents are implemented as impressed current sources in full-vehicle full-wave modeling using an FDTD multi-wire subcelluar algorithm. Thus, …

The EMC and signal integrity impact of printed circuit board (PCB) trace discontinuities, such as vias, where the signal is transitioned from one layer to another in the PCB stackup, have become significant recently with the use of very high speed signals in today''s systems. If these discontinuities are ignored, significant distortion of the high speed signal can occur, and in many cases, cause data errors. A fast and accurate technique to include the effect of via discontinuities in the typical design process is needed to ensure this distortion is considered if significant. Therefore, a simple equivalent circuit for the …

Radiated emission algorithms for a printed circuit board EMC expert system are described. The expert system mimics the thinking processes that human EMC engineers would use to analyze circuit boards and make design recommendations. Working with limited information about the enclosure, cables or the exact nature of the signals, the expert system evaluates different structures on the printed circuit board looking for potentially strong radiated emission sources. Results obtained from the analysis of a sample printed circuit board are provided to demonstrate how the expert system quickly identifies problems that would otherwise be difficult to locate.

An Extrapolation Procedure To Shorten Time Domain Simulations, Giuseppe Selli, James L. Drewniak, David Pommerenke

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Time-domain simulation algorithms are widely used in the anaylsis and design of electromagnetic systems. Many of them are characterized by high Q's. Thus, the simulations have to employ many time steps in order to achieve a complete characterization of these systems. This time-consuming computational effort can be avoided if the late instants of time are extrapolated by applying a parametric estimation algorithm. An optimized implementation of a time-domain extrapolation method and a stop criterion are discussed in this paper. The latter criterion is based upon a normalized squared difference between the waveforms extrapolated from two different sets of initial data …

An important class of problems is the interaction of an antenna with the cavity of a semi-open metallic structure. In a working environment, an antenna may change its performance due to interactions with its surroundings. This is especially true in automotive applications. Therefore, it is important to consider the interaction of an antenna with possible resonating parts, and to solve these complex electrodynamics problems together. The development of methods for modeling and studying electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) problems has practical value. The method of auxiliary sources (MAS) with the method of moments (MoM) is applied to solve the excitation problem where …
