Implementation Of A Modified Perturb And Observe Maximum Power Point Tracking Algorithm For Photovoltaic System Using An Embedded Microcontroller, Dr. Adel A. Elbaset
Dr. Adel A. Elbaset
The conventional algorithm of perturb and observe (P&O) is widely applied due to its simplicity, low cost and easy implementation. However, it suffers from instabilities during rapid changes of weather and/or oscillation around maximum power point (MPP) at steady state. Instabilities occur due to the incorrect decision taken by the conventional P&O algorithm at the first step change in duty cycle during the rapid change in radiation. The reason for the steadystate oscillation is the continuous perturbation and tradeoff between step sizes and the convergence time. This study presents a modified P&O algorithm to overcome such drawbacks. It uses a …

Solar photovoltaic (PV) is one of the most promising renewable energy resources that converts solar energy into electricity with environment friendly manner. However, it has low efficiency and high relative costs. In order to overcome these drawbacks, a grid-connected PV energy system should be required to satisfy the load demand. The aim of this thesis is to study, design and performance analysis of grid-connected PV system as follows: • System modeling; that is composed of two-diode model to describe the I-V and P-V characteristic curves of PV system performance. Modeling of PV system represents the main goal in the design …

Renewable Energy And Smart Grid Integration Through Advanced Power Electronics, Dr. Adel A. Elbaset
Dr. Adel A. Elbaset
As electricity demands are increasing day by day causing unbalance in the present grid system which results in various causes like load shedding, unbalance voltage and power quality etc which ultimately affects the consumers. Now to avoid all such situations the only option is to meet the demand by increasing generation but, we are also lagging with the conventional sources so generating more power is also not convenient by conventional ways. Therefore, recent researches are interested in renewable energy system integrated with smart grid through advanced power electronic converters. Smart gird with renewable energy sources have been regarded as the …

Optimal Design Of A Pv/Fuel Cell Hybrid Power System For The City Of Brest In France, Dr. Adel A. Elbaset
Dr. Adel A. Elbaset
This paper deals with the optimal design of a stand-alone hybrid photovoltaic and fuel cell power system without battery storage to supply the electric load demand of the city of Brest, Western Brittany in France. The proposed optimal design study is focused on economical performance and is mainly based on the loss of the power supply probability concept. The hybrid power system optimal design is based a simulation model developed using HOMER. In this context, a practical load demand profile of Brest city is used with real weather data.

Design And Practical Implementation Of A Simple Data Acquisition System For Photovoltaic Applications, Dr. Adel A. Elbaset
Dr. Adel A. Elbaset
There are several commercial systems for testing PV modules under field conditions but they are expensive. This paper presents a design and implementation of a simple, low cost and high efficient data acquisition system for testing the photovoltaic modules under different operating conditions (different solar radiation levels and surface temperatures). It has been designed to be the laboratory basic element for the photovoltaic generators characterization. This data acquisition system is designed to acquire and then records the signals from the different sensors that are used for measuring the different parameters of the PV system. These measurements of the different parameter …

Dr. Adel A. Elbaset
Dealing with power distribution system became one of the most important arts in the field of power system, especially in the rapid increase of the distributed generation (DG) penetration to the distribution level which is a vital and important part of the entire power system. In this paper, a very special power distribution system with a unique deployment of distributed generation, such as, photovoltaic and wind generation has been studied. Energy storage system is utilized to play the main role to control the system’s power quality and the system frequency, as load following operation (LFO) and automatic generation control (AGC), …

A Neural Network Based Speed Control Of A Linear Induction Motor Drive, Adel A. Elbaset, Ahmed A. Hassan, Yehia S. Mohamed, T. Hiyama,, T. H. Mohamed
Dr. Adel A. Elbaset
In this paper, a general regression neural network (GRNN) based controller is used to control the speed and thrust output of the linear induction motor drive. The field orientation principle is used to asymptotically decouple the motor speed from the secondary flux. The idea of model predictive control technique is used for the training of the proposed controller. The motivation for using this control strategy for training the GRNN based controller is to reduce the effect of the uncertainty due to motor parameters variation and load disturbance. This newly developed design strategy combines the advantage of the neural networks and …

Dr. Adel A. Elbaset
The reliability system concern and CO2 emission reduction are still the main targets of optimization problem in the hybrid generation system components. This pa- per utilizes Genetic Algorithm (GA) method to determine the optimal capacities of PV system, battery bank and diesel generator (DG) unit according to the minimum cost ob- jective functions that relate to these two factors. In this study, the cost objective function includes the annual capital cost (ACC), annual operation maintenance cost (AOM), an- nual replacement cost (ARC), annual fuel cost (AFC), annual emission cost (AEC) and annual customer damage cost (ADC). The proposed method has …

The optimization of diesel generators (DGs) and renewable energy sources have to be done within a cost benefit, high reliability and environmentally friendly framework. Most of optimization method just consider only from economical point of view. This paper presents complete optimization method involving of cost, reliability and pollutant emission into optimization process. The reliability level is analyzed using basic probabilistic concept in order to find loss of load probability (LOLP). This value is then used to determine the customer damage cost due to electricity interruption. Meanwhile, CO2 emission as an indicator of pollution is calculated to determine the annual emission …
