This work investigates the contribution modelling makes when integrated into the pilot plant development stage of a new synthetic aggregate manufacturing process. The pilot plant is based around a novel rotary kiln, unique in design from standard kilns. The kiln has a trefoil cross sectional profile and a low thermal mass. A dynamic simulation model of the kiln was built to simulate the thermal behaviour of the pilot plant and the movement of the pelletised aggregate as it travels through the kiln drum.
