Uncertainties In Retrieval Of Remote Sensing Reflectance From Ocean Color Satellite Observations, Eder I. Herrera Estrella Sep 2023

Uncertainties In Retrieval Of Remote Sensing Reflectance From Ocean Color Satellite Observations, Eder I. Herrera Estrella

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Ocean Color radiometry uses remote sensing to interpret ocean dynamics by retrieving remote sensing reflectance (π‘…π‘Ÿπ‘ ) from satellite imagery at different scales and over different time periods. π‘…π‘Ÿπ‘  spectrum characterizes the ocean color that we observe, and from which we can discern concentrations of chlorophyll, organic and inorganic particles, and carbon fluxes in the ocean and atmosphere. π‘…π‘Ÿπ‘  is derived from the total radiance at the top of the atmosphere (TOA). However, it only represents up to ten percent of the total signal. Hence, the retrieval of π‘…π‘Ÿπ‘  from the total radiance at TOA involves the application of atmospheric correction …

Nature-Inspired Electrode Materials For Next Generation Sustainable Energy Storage, Mikhail Miroshnikov Jun 2020

Nature-Inspired Electrode Materials For Next Generation Sustainable Energy Storage, Mikhail Miroshnikov

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Despite revolutionizing the world of portable electronics, the contemporary lithium-ion battery (LIB) suffers from challenges associated with the cost, safety, and environmental impact of transition metal oxide-based intercalation cathodes. To alleviate these issues, naturally occurring organic molecules may serve as sustainable alternatives to traditional inorganic cathode materials. The electrochemical properties of organic compounds are derived from redox-active functional groups containing oxygen, nitrogen and sulfur. Additionally, these functional groups are capable of coordinating metal ions beyond lithium, allowing for compatibility with sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) and other earth abundant metal-based energy storage systems. However, despite competitive performance against commercialized cathode materials, much …

Development Of Functional Interactions Among Cortical And Trabecular Traits During Growth Of The Lumbar Vertebral Body, Melissa Ramcharan

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Variation in bone traits that contribute to increased fracture risk in the elderly is mainly established in adulthood. Previous studies have shown that in adults, cortical and trabecular traits are functionally related. How variations in traits develop to establish mechanical function in adult bone is not well understood. In this study, we examined temporal changes in the development of cortical and trabecular traits during growth in mouse lumbar vertebral body structures that have a wide range of genetic variants. We determined a sequence of events among traits that would suggest how functional bone structures developed. Examining bones in A/J, C57/BL6 …

Estimation Of Outer-Middle Ear Transmission Using Dpoaes And Fractional-Order Modeling Of Human Middle Ear, Maryam Naghibolhosseini Feb 2015

Estimation Of Outer-Middle Ear Transmission Using Dpoaes And Fractional-Order Modeling Of Human Middle Ear, Maryam Naghibolhosseini

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Our ability to hear depends primarily on sound waves traveling through the outer and middle ear toward the inner ear. Hence, the characteristics of the outer and middle ear affect sound transmission to/from the inner ear. The role of the middle and outer ear in sound transmission is particularly important for otoacoustic emissions (OAEs), which are sound signals generated in a healthy cochlea, and recorded by a sensitive microphone placed in the ear canal. OAEs are used to evaluate the health and function of the cochlea; however, they are also affected by outer and middle ear characteristics. To …

Cited2-Mediated Mechanotransduction And Its Use For Chondroprotection, Daniel J. Leong

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Novel prevention and therapeutic treatment for cartilage degradation is urgently called for, as cartilage degradation is a hallmark for arthritic diseases including osteoarthritis (OA) and rheumatoid arthritis (RA), and there is a high incidence of arthritis-related disability and high medical costs. While both underuse (e.g. physically inactive lifestyle) and overuse (e.g. high impact or intense repetitive joint use as seen in certain sports) are risk factors for cartilage degradation, recent studies highlight that dynamic moderate loading is associated with reduced incidence of developing OA. Exercise is prescribed in most cases at moderate levels for both OA and RA patients, and …

An Innovative Ran Architecture For Emerging Heterogeneous Networks: "The Road To The 5g Era", Shahab Hussain

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

The global demand for mobile-broadband data services has experienced phenomenal growth over the last few years, driven by the rapid proliferation of smart devices such as smartphones and tablets. This growth is expected to continue unabated as mobile data traffic is predicted to grow anywhere from 20 to 50 times over the next 5 years. Exacerbating the problem is that such unprecedented surge in smartphones usage, which is characterized by frequent short on/off connections and mobility, generates heavy signaling traffic load in the network "signaling storms". This consumes a disproportion amount of network resources, compromising network throughput and efficiency, and …
