The Missing Parameter In Renewable Energy Power Quality Analysis, I.E. The Coefficient Of Variation: Case Study Of A 3-Mw On-Site Wind Turbine Project In Ireland, Tony Kealy

Articles

Businesses are employing distributed generation techniques, such as wind turbines, to decarbonise their electrical energy supply by reducing their dependence on fossil-fuel-generated energy. This study investigates the effectiveness of a company making a €3,500,000 investment in a 3-MW on-site wind turbine to supply some or all of their factory electrical loads. The results should benefit the investing company and other potential investors by evaluating the economic, environmental, and social outcomes of the investment. A case study methodology was used. The study found that the payback period was six and a half years, and the turbine installation benefited the environment by …

Detection Of Grid Voltage Anomalies Via Broadband Subspace Decomposition, Samet Biricik, Soydan Redif Jan 2019

Detection Of Grid Voltage Anomalies Via Broadband Subspace Decomposition, Samet Biricik, Soydan Redif

Conference papers

Due to the increase of sensitive loads on the mains power grid, measurement and monitoring of the power quality (PQ) have become an important factor for both consumers and operators. As is well-known, PQ problems occur in a very short time period with specific characteristics. In transmission or distribution systems, power quality data are collected from monitoring devices such as digital fault recorders, power quality and dynamic system monitors, etc. The recorded data has to be analysed in order to understand system anomalies. These anomalies may be due to sources of broadband noise. In this study, we employ broadband subspace …

An Lcl-Filter Design With Optimum Total Inductance And Capacitance, Sampath Jayalath, Mohamed Moin Hanif Jan 2018

An Lcl-Filter Design With Optimum Total Inductance And Capacitance, Sampath Jayalath, Mohamed Moin Hanif

Articles

LCL-filter is among the best performing filters for grid-connected voltage source inverters. Designing of the filter parameters (grid-side and inverter-side inductors and capacitor), takes an iterative approach due to the coherence between the parameters and design requirements such as IEEE-519 Std for harmonic current limitations, reactive power compensation limit, and maximum allowable voltage drop across the filter to limit the switching losses. Most of the proposed LCL-filter optimization strategies emphasize on reducing the total inductance and losses of the filter while meeting the design requirements. There is less emphasis given on the capacitor selection and optimizing its value. Therefore, this …

New Hybrid Active Power Filter For Harmonic Current Suppression And Reactive Power Compensation, Samet Biricik, Ozgur Cemal Ozerdem, Soydan Redif, Mustafa Sezai Dincer Jan 2016

New Hybrid Active Power Filter For Harmonic Current Suppression And Reactive Power Compensation, Samet Biricik, Ozgur Cemal Ozerdem, Soydan Redif, Mustafa Sezai Dincer

Articles

In the case of undistorted and balanced grid voltages, low ratio shunt Active Power Filters (APFs) can give unity power factors and achieve current harmonic cancellation. However, this is not possible when source voltages are distorted and unbalanced. In this study, the cost-effective hybrid active power filter (HAPF) topology for satisfying the requirements of harmonic-current suppression and non-active power compensation for industry is presented. An effective strategy is developed to observe the effect of the placement of power capacitors and LC filters with the shunt active power filter. A new method for alleviating the negative effects of a non-ideal grid …

Offshore Electrical Networks And Grid Integration Of Wave Energy Converter Arrays - Techno-Economic Optimisation Of Array Electrical Networks, Power Quality Assessment, And Irish Market Perspectives, Fergus Sharkey Apr 2015

Offshore Electrical Networks And Grid Integration Of Wave Energy Converter Arrays - Techno-Economic Optimisation Of Array Electrical Networks, Power Quality Assessment, And Irish Market Perspectives, Fergus Sharkey

Doctoral

Wave energy is an emerging industry and faces many challenges before commercial wave energy converter (WEC) arrays are installed. One of these challenges is the grid integration of WEC arrays. This includes offshore electrical networks, grid compliance, and access to electrical markets. This must be achieved in a technically viable manner and also at an acceptable cost. As electrical networks are expected to make up a large proportion of the overall WEC array CAPEX, perhaps up to 25%, this area is critical to the long term competitiveness of wave energy.

The objectives of this thesis are to develop technically and …

Improved Harmonic Suppression Efficiency Of Single-Phase Apfs In Distorted Distribution Systems, Samet Biricik, Soydan Redif, Shafiuzzaman Khadem, Malabika Basu Jan 2015

Improved Harmonic Suppression Efficiency Of Single-Phase Apfs In Distorted Distribution Systems, Samet Biricik, Soydan Redif, Shafiuzzaman Khadem, Malabika Basu

Articles

In this study, a control method is proposed to improve the harmonic suppression efficiency of the single phase active power filter in a distorted power system to suppress current harmonics and reactive power. The proposed method uses the self-tuning filter (STF) algorithm to process single phase grid voltage in order to provide a uniform reference grid current, which increases the efficiency of the system. The results of the simulation study are presented to verify the effectiveness of the proposed control technique in this study.

Upqc For Power Quality Improvement In Dg Integrated Smart Grid Network: A Review, Shafiuzzaman Khadem, Malabika Basu, Michael Conlon

Articles

Quality of power supply has become an important issue with the increasing demand of Distributed Generation (DG) systems either connected to the grid through some power electronics grid-tie inverters or to work in isolated (microgrid) mode towards the development of a smart grid network. In this paper a technical review of Integration of Unified Power Quality Conditioner (UPQC) in Distributed Generation Network has been presented. Though the primary task of UPQC is to minimize the grid voltage and load current disturbance along with the reactive and harmonic power compensation, additional functionalities like compensation of voltage interruption and active power transfer …

The Effects Of Harmonics On Power Quality And Energy Efficiency, Alan Harrison Jan 2010

The Effects Of Harmonics On Power Quality And Energy Efficiency, Alan Harrison

Other resources

By making our electricity supply more secure, reliable and versatile will mean that we reduce our reliance upon oil, gas and solid fuels, which mostly exist outside of Ireland and the European community. The majority of our fuel is imported and this makes our economy dependent on outside interests and out of our control. Even more importantly as the world’s fossil fuel reserves are running out and electricity demand is ever increasing.

If we make our electricity networks secure and designed to the highest standards we can import and export electrical energy more easily as our demands change, for example …

Protection Of Dvr Against Short Circuit Faults At The Load Side, Iurie Axente, Malabika Basu, Michael Conlon, Kevin Gaughan Jan 2006

Protection Of Dvr Against Short Circuit Faults At The Load Side, Iurie Axente, Malabika Basu, Michael Conlon, Kevin Gaughan

Conference papers

An additional control scheme has been proposed in this paper for a dynamic voltage restorer (DVR), to protect it against load short circuit conditions. When overcurrents occur in the distribution system, under the proposed scheme the DVR reverses its injected voltage polarity so as to minimise the current flow. The detection method is based on impedance measurement feedback. The advantage of the scheme is that no additional over current device or protection is required for the DVR and it is easy to implement. The proposed control scheme has been validated through simulation.

Application Of Wavelet Transform To Power Quality (Pq) Disturbance Analysis, Malabika Basu, Biswajit Basu Jan 2004

Application Of Wavelet Transform To Power Quality (Pq) Disturbance Analysis, Malabika Basu, Biswajit Basu

Conference papers

This paper presents a wavelet analysis based time-frequency technique to identify power system transients and disturbances. A mother wavelet basis function (Littlewood- Paley (L-P)) with dyadic non-overlapping frequency hands has been used. The advantage of the proposed approach is in identification of the occurrence and duration of the disturbances. A few power signals with power quality disturbances have been analysed to show the effectiveness of the proposed technique.
