Optimization Of The Bowtie Gap Geometry For A Maximum Electric Field Enhancement, Tsenguun Byambadorj Oct 2016

Optimization Of The Bowtie Gap Geometry For A Maximum Electric Field Enhancement, Tsenguun Byambadorj

Master's Theses (2009 -)

Optimization of the geometry of a metallic bowtie gap at radio frequency is presented in this thesis. Since the design and fabrication of a plasmonic device (nanogap) at nanoscale is challenging, the results of this study can be used to estimate the best design parameters for nanogap structure. The geometry of the bowtie gap including gap size, tip width, metal thickness, and tip angle are investigated at macroscale to find the maximum electric field enhancement across the gap. This thesis focuses on the simulation portion of a work that consists of experimental and simulation platforms. The simulation platform is created …

Performance-Robust Dynamic Feedback Control Of Lipschitz Nonlinear Systems, Winston Baker Oct 2016

Performance-Robust Dynamic Feedback Control Of Lipschitz Nonlinear Systems, Winston Baker

Dissertations (1934 -)

This dissertation addresses the dynamic control of nonlinear systems with finite energy noise in the state and measurement equations. Regional eigenvalue assignment (REA) is used to ensure that the state estimate error is driven to zero significantly faster than the state itself. Moreover, the controller is designed for the resulting closed loop system to achieve any one of a set of general performance criteria (GPC). The nonlinear model is assumed to have a Lipschitz nonlinearity both in the state and measurement equations. By using the norm bound of the nonlinearity, the controller is designed to be robust against all nonlinearities …

Analysis Of Interference Between Electromagnetic Articulography And Electroglottograph Systems, Kelly Vonderhaar Oct 2016

Analysis Of Interference Between Electromagnetic Articulography And Electroglottograph Systems, Kelly Vonderhaar

Master's Theses (2009 -)

Electromagnetic Articulography (EMA) has become an integral tool for researchers and clinicians who seek to characterize speech kinematics. The position and orientation of the articulators – which include the jaw, lips, and tongue – are recorded by attaching sensors to the articulators and tracking the movement of the sensors through an electromagnetic field. This has been used by researchers and clinicians to better understand dysarthria and synthesize speech, among other applications. Another speech tool, electroglottography (EGG), is used to analyze the movement of the vocal folds during speech production. This is achieved by measuring the time variation of the contact …

Plasticized Polymer Coatings For Sh-Saw Sensors For High Sensitivity And Long-Term Monitoring Of Btex Analytes In Liquid Phase, Pintu Adhikari Oct 2016

Plasticized Polymer Coatings For Sh-Saw Sensors For High Sensitivity And Long-Term Monitoring Of Btex Analytes In Liquid Phase, Pintu Adhikari

Master's Theses (2009 -)

BTEX compounds (benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylene) are constituents of crude oil and hazardous to human health. Among them, benzene has the lowest maximum contaminant level for drinking water because of its carcinogenicity. Spills or leakage from underground storage tanks or hazardous waste sites can contaminate nearby groundwater with these volatile organic compounds. Therefore, it is very important to detect the presence of BTEX contamination as early as possible in order to start the remediation process and maintain a healthy environment. To develop an in-situ continuous monitoring sensor system, shear horizontal surface acoustic wave (SH-SAW) sensor devices are being investigated …

An Interactive Likelihood For The Multi-Bernoulli Filter, Anthony B. Hoak Jul 2016

An Interactive Likelihood For The Multi-Bernoulli Filter, Anthony B. Hoak

Master's Theses (2009 -)

In this thesis, a simple yet effective technique is presented for increasing the accuracy of multi-target tracking algorithms with a focus on sequential Monte-Carlo implementations of random finite set-based approaches. This technique, referred to throughout this work as an interactive likelihood, exploits the spatial information that exists in any given measurement, reducing the need for data association and allowing for more target interaction thereby increasing overall tracking accuracy. The interactive likelihood is constructed entirely within the random finite set framework and is integrated with a multi-Bernoulli filter. In addition, a state-of-the-art deep neural network for pedestrian detection is combined in …

Robust And Resilient Control Design And Performance Analysis For Uncertain Systems With Finite Energy Disturbances, Fan Feng Jul 2016

Robust And Resilient Control Design And Performance Analysis For Uncertain Systems With Finite Energy Disturbances, Fan Feng

Dissertations (1934 -)

This dissertation addresses the problem of robust and resilient control design with additional performance analysis for uncertain systems with finite energy disturbances. The control design is robust and resilient in the sense of maintaining certain performance criteria in the presence of perturbations in both system parameters and feedback gains. The performance analysis evaluates resilience properties of state feedback and dynamic (state estimate) feedback controllers. A resilient and robust state feedback controller is designed using linear matrix inequality (LMI) techniques for the characterization of solutions to the analysis and design problems posed in this work. Uncertainties are allowed in the linear …

Design Optimization Of Permanent Magnet Machines Over A Target Operating Cycle Using Computationally Efficient Techniques, Alireza Fatemi Jul 2016

Design Optimization Of Permanent Magnet Machines Over A Target Operating Cycle Using Computationally Efficient Techniques, Alireza Fatemi

Dissertations (1934 -)

The common practices of large-scale finite element (FE) model-based design optimization of permanent magnet synchronous machines (PMSMs) oftentimes aim at improving the machine performance at the rated operating conditions, thus overlooking the performance treatment over the entire range of operation in the constant torque and extended speed regions. This is mainly due to the computational complexities associated with several aspects of such large-scale design optimization problems, including the FE-based modeling techniques, large number of load operating points for load-cycle evaluation of the design candidates, and large number of function evaluations required for identification of the globally optimal design solutions. In …

Development Of A Wireless Mobile Computing Platform For Fall Risk Prediction, Akm Jahangir Alam Majumder

Dissertations (1934 -)

Falls are a major health risk with which the elderly and disabled must contend. Scientific research on smartphone-based gait detection systems using the Internet of Things (IoT) has recently become an important component in monitoring injuries due to these falls. Analysis of human gait for detecting falls is the subject of many research projects. Progress in these systems, the capabilities of smartphones, and the IoT are enabling the advancement of sophisticated mobile computing applications that detect falls after they have occurred. This detection has been the focus of most fall-related research; however, ensuring preventive measures that predict a fall is …

Novel Convergence Results In Nonlinear Filtering, Jennifer Lynn Bonniwell Apr 2016

Novel Convergence Results In Nonlinear Filtering, Jennifer Lynn Bonniwell

Dissertations (1934 -)

In this dissertation, the discrete-time extended Kalman filter is analyzed for its ability to attenuate finite-energy disturbances, known as the H-infinity property. Though the extended Kalman filter is designed to be a locally optimal minimum variance estimator, this dissertation proves that it has additional properties, such as H-infinity. This analysis is performed with the extended Kalman filter in direct form. Since this form reduces assumptions placed on the system in previous works on convergence and H-2 properties of the extended Kalman filter, the extended Kalman filter used as a nonlinear observer for noise-free models is revisited using the direct form …

Least-Squares Mapping From Kinematic Data To Acoustic Synthesis Parameters For Rehabilitative Acoustic Learning, Xiangyu Zhou Apr 2016

Least-Squares Mapping From Kinematic Data To Acoustic Synthesis Parameters For Rehabilitative Acoustic Learning, Xiangyu Zhou

Master's Theses (2009 -)

Thousands of people suffer from dysarthria resulting from neurological injury of the motor component of the motor-speech system, and need to rely on alternative methods to communicate in daily life, such as body language or text-to-speech [1] . However, there are currently very few effective rehabilitative therapies for helping these patients improve their speech. Because of this, research is needed to develop better rehabilitative therapies. One such area of research is the use of involuntary acoustic learning. The Speech and Swallowing lab at Marquette University has an Electromagnetic Articulography (EMA) system to collect kinematic data and a software system called …

Investigation Of The Use Of A Plasticizer-Polymer Sensor Coating With Improved Long-Term Stability In The Liquid Phase, Laura Jeanne Alderson Apr 2016

Investigation Of The Use Of A Plasticizer-Polymer Sensor Coating With Improved Long-Term Stability In The Liquid Phase, Laura Jeanne Alderson

Master's Theses (2009 -)

Benzene is one of the volatile organic compounds present in crude oil and gasoline. Leakage from underground storage tanks or hazardous waste sites can introduce benzene contamination into nearby groundwater. Benzene is a known carcinogen and its exposure is limited by the Environmental Protection Agency to 5 parts per billion (ppb) in drinking water. Early, accurate detection of the presence of benzene contamination in groundwater supplies is extremely important. Shear horizontal surface acoustic wave (SH-SAW) devices with a chemically sensitive coating can be used for the detection of volatile organic compounds in liquid, such as BTEX (benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and …
