Hyperspectral Imaging For Characterizing Single Plasmonic Nanostructure And Single-Cell Analysis, Nishir Sanatkumar Mehta Oct 2018

Hyperspectral Imaging For Characterizing Single Plasmonic Nanostructure And Single-Cell Analysis, Nishir Sanatkumar Mehta

LSU Master's Theses

Orientation of plasmonic nanostructures is an important feature in many nanoscale applications such as photovoltaics, catalyst, biosensors DNA interactions, protein detections, hotspot of surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS), and fluorescence resonant energy transfer (FRET) experiments. Silver nanocubes with significant spectral signatures between 400-700 nm are observed in this experimental research. Whereas study of single cells will enable the analysis of cell-to-cell variations within a heterogeneous population. These variations are important for further analysis and understanding of disease propagation, drug development, stem cell differentiation, embryos development, and how cells respond to each other and their environment. Adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells possess the …

Dispersing And Depositing Mose2 Onto Metal, Insulating, And Semiconducting Substrates Via Voltage-Controlled Deposition Technique, Kalyan Chakravarthy Byrisetty Oct 2018

Dispersing And Depositing Mose2 Onto Metal, Insulating, And Semiconducting Substrates Via Voltage-Controlled Deposition Technique, Kalyan Chakravarthy Byrisetty

LSU Master's Theses

In today’s world, consumer electronics are getting smaller than ever. These reductions in size are preceded by advancements in electronic materials engineering and related fields. The need for materials that have various properties and are suitable for applications also necessitated research on different materials. Growing research in the applications of graphene led the way to the discovery of materials that have similar properties to graphene. In this way, the transition metal di-chalcogenides (TMDCs) came into use for electrical engineering. Techniques are required to put TMDCs into application, however here we are going to explain the vital focus of our research …

Non-Parametric Classification Of Time Series Using Permutation Ordinal Statistics, Aldo Duarte Vera Tudela Oct 2018

Non-Parametric Classification Of Time Series Using Permutation Ordinal Statistics, Aldo Duarte Vera Tudela

LSU Master's Theses

The present thesis explores some approaches to classify time series without prior statistical information using the concept of permutation entropy. Motivated by the results from a previous published and relevant work that set similarity relationships between EEG time series, a reproduction of the proposed approach was performed giving negative results. The failure to reproduce those results led to the conclusion that the approach of building statistics from permutation patterns have to be complemented with another metric in order to be used for classification purposes. The concept of Total Variation Distance (TVD) was then used to develop three algorithms to classify …

Design, Simulation, And Construction Of An Ieee 14-Bus Power System, John Albert Boudreaux Sep 2018

Design, Simulation, And Construction Of An Ieee 14-Bus Power System, John Albert Boudreaux

LSU Master's Theses

Today’s bulk power system is massive, complex, and very dynamic. The U.S. power grid spans from coast to coast and even as far reaching as Canada. With the addition of new technologies such as renewable energies and power electronics to aid in power conversion and control, the power system grows more complex by the day. The most common approach of analyzing power system stability is through computer modeling and simulation. Due to the vast size and inaccessibility of transmission systems, real time testing can prove difficult. The motivation of this project was to design, simulate, and construct an IEEE 14 …

A Study On Reduction Of Harmonic Distortion Caused By Ac Arc Furnaces, Venkata Mani Gadiraju Aug 2018

A Study On Reduction Of Harmonic Distortion Caused By Ac Arc Furnaces, Venkata Mani Gadiraju

LSU Master's Theses

In AC arc furnaces, arc ignition is stabilized by inductors which are connected across its supply lines. They cause power factor degradation in the system. When furnaces are modelled as linear RL load, the arc nonlinearity reduces the impact of this degradation to a significant extent. Furnace Power factor is improved by the DC voltage on the arc. In this research study, power factor of AC furnaces is estimated on the assumption that DC voltage on the arc is constant and furnace operates in steady state. Primary objective of this research was to determine the power factor of the furnace …

The Fabrication Of High-Aspect Ratio Gratings For Talbot Interferometer With Medical Imaging Application., Vikaram Singh May 2018

The Fabrication Of High-Aspect Ratio Gratings For Talbot Interferometer With Medical Imaging Application., Vikaram Singh

LSU Master's Theses

X-ray Phase contrast-based Talbot interferometer creates high contrast between weak and strong absorbing materials, which makes it effective in imaging soft tissues. However, its performance is bounded by the aspect-ratio, features and symmetry of its gratings. For 40 KeV energy X-rays, the analyzer grating thickness should be 100 µm or more to achieve > 90% absorption in order to obtain high contrast images. Moreover, the smaller period in grating is desired for higher resolution. Therefore, researchers are exploring various fabrication techniques to achieve greater aspect-ratio gratings. Utilizing modern LIGA techniques, the aspect-ratio of gratings can be improved with a simplified …

Considerations On Direct Balancing Of Ultra-High Power Ac Arc Furnaces In Uneasy State, Ikenna Louis Ezeonwumelu Apr 2018

Considerations On Direct Balancing Of Ultra-High Power Ac Arc Furnaces In Uneasy State, Ikenna Louis Ezeonwumelu

LSU Master's Theses

During the operation of ultra-high-power ac arc furnace the negative effects of unbalance mostly occur in the secondary terminals of the transformer connected to the load. Hence balancing and compensating the furnace at this terminal will not only improve the transformer efficiency but also reduce energy losses that do occur. In this thesis a computer modeling of a reference ac arc furnace in both balanced and unbalanced states were simulated, and the effects of a reactive balancing compensator installed on the secondary side of the furnace transformer was evaluated to see how much delivered energy improvement can be obtained. The …

Multitarget Joint Delay And Doppler Shift Estimation In Bistatic Passive Radar, Mohammed Rashid Apr 2018

Multitarget Joint Delay And Doppler Shift Estimation In Bistatic Passive Radar, Mohammed Rashid

LSU Master's Theses

Bistatic passive radar (BPR) system does not transmit any electromagnetic signal unlike the active radar, but employs an existing Illuminator of opportunity (IO) in the environment, for instance, a broadcast station, to detect and track the targets of interest. Therefore, a BPR system is comprised of two channels. One is the reference channel that collects only the IO signal, and the other is the surveillance channel which is used to capture the targets' reflected signals. When the IO signal reflected from multiple targets is captured in the surveillance channel (SC) then estimating the delays and Doppler shifts of all the …
