An Analysis On Wildfire Mitigations Employed By Utilities In California, Evan Luu Dec 2023

An Analysis On Wildfire Mitigations Employed By Utilities In California, Evan Luu

Master's Theses

As climate change continues to worsen, environmental effects are felt by many people around the world. In California, some of its most damaging wildfires have been found to be started by utilities. As the state continues to suffer from worsening wildfire conditions, the utilities need to implement a variety of wildfire mitigations to help reduce the risk of wildfires that can affect the state and its residents. This paper analyzes the effectiveness of four mitigations employed across three California utilities and suggests potential ways for the mitigations to be used together. The technologies evaluated are covered conductor, rapid earth fault …

Enhancing Telecom Churn Prediction: Adaboost With Oversampling And Recursive Feature Elimination Approach, Long Dinh Tran Jun 2023

Enhancing Telecom Churn Prediction: Adaboost With Oversampling And Recursive Feature Elimination Approach, Long Dinh Tran

Master's Theses

Churn prediction is a critical task for businesses to retain their valuable customers. This paper presents a comprehensive study of churn prediction in the telecom sector using 15 approaches, including popular algorithms such as Logistic Regression, Support Vector Machine, Decision Tree, Random Forest, and AdaBoost.

The study is segmented into three sets of experiments, each focusing on a different approach to building the churn prediction model. The model is constructed using the original training set in the first set of experiments. The second set involves oversampling the training set to address the issue of imbalanced data. Lastly, the third set …

Efficiency Study Of A Hybrid Ac/Dc House, Eunice Dominique Solomon Santiago Jun 2023

Efficiency Study Of A Hybrid Ac/Dc House, Eunice Dominique Solomon Santiago

Master's Theses

With the proliferation of residential-scale renewable energy sources and DC loads, it has become attractive to use residential DC electrical system that could offer benefits over the legacy residential AC electrical system. The Hybrid AC/DC house provides a sustainable alternative to preexisting residential electrical system by having both AC and DC buses. The DC bus facilitates the connection from DC sources to DC loads, whereas the AC bus interfaces AC sources to AC loads. The study develops the equations to calculate losses based on a model consisting of four main components: Multiple-Input Single-Output (MISO) converter, AC-DC converter, inverter, and DC-DC …

Design Of Class F-Based Doherty Power Amplifier For S-Band Applications, Kyle Chang Jun 2023

Design Of Class F-Based Doherty Power Amplifier For S-Band Applications, Kyle Chang

Master's Theses

Modern RF and millimeter-wave communication links call for high-efficiency front end systems with high output power and high linearity to meet minimum transmission requirements. Advanced modulation techniques, such as orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) require a large power amplifier (PA) dynamic range due to the high peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR). This thesis provides the analysis, design, and experimental verification of a high-efficiency, high-linearity S-band Doherty power amplifier (DPA) based on the Class F PA. Traditional Class F PAs use harmonically tuned output matching networks to obtain up to 88.4% power-added efficiency (PAE) theoretically, however the amplifier experiences poor linearity performance due …

Class F Power Amplifier And Doherty Power Amplifier Design, Shreyansh Suman Jun 2023

Class F Power Amplifier And Doherty Power Amplifier Design, Shreyansh Suman

Master's Theses

The main goal of this thesis is to design and fabricate a power amplifier suitable for entry in IMS 2023 High Efficiency Power Amplifier Student Design Competition. Power amplifier design requires multiple design tradeoffs, for example, efficiency and linearity are the two main conflicting design parameters that require careful tradeoff to ensure optimum performance. Two prototypes are designed and fabricated for the competition: Class F operating at 1.5 GHz and Doherty Power Amplifier designed for an operating frequency of 3 GHz. Both prototypes meet the minimum requirement for qualifying in the IMS 2023 HEPA SDC. Class F power amplifier designed …

Parameter Measurement Of 0.33 Hp Synchronous Machine Using Itech Digital Power Supply, Andrew Kargol Jun 2023

Parameter Measurement Of 0.33 Hp Synchronous Machine Using Itech Digital Power Supply, Andrew Kargol

Master's Theses

The classical methodologies for synchronous machine modeling provide a solid estimation for synchronous machine behavior but are limited in terms of accuracy due to the assumptions made in the modeling process. The equivalent circuit model developed by the classical approach breaks down the entire machine into a singular impedance component. This allows the model to be generated more quickly but limits its accuracy. In the pursuit of developing a more realistic model, this thesis outlines the parameter measurement of a Hampden SM-100 synchronous machine. In determining the SM-100’s experimental parameters, this thesis executes and analyzes new experimental approaches to synchronous …

Solar Farm Utilizing A Battery Energy Storage System, Hannah Nicole Bonderov Mar 2023

Solar Farm Utilizing A Battery Energy Storage System, Hannah Nicole Bonderov

Master's Theses

According to the US Energy and Information Administration, between 2022-2023 60% of planned new electricity generation consists of solar farms with a battery energy storage system [1]. The demand for these paired systems has increased since batteries can be charged during the day with the energy captured from the solar farm then released to the customer in the evening during peak energy demand. This achieves peak load shaving which reduces the cost of electricity for the customer and is ecologically friendly.

This thesis aims to create an efficient solar farm with a battery energy storage system for a farmer in …

Simple Open-Source Formal Verification Of Industrial Programs, Christopher Disney Peterson Mar 2023

Simple Open-Source Formal Verification Of Industrial Programs, Christopher Disney Peterson

Master's Theses

Industrial programs written on Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs) have become an essential component of many modern industries, including automotive, aerospace, manufacturing, infrastructure, and even amusement parks. As these safety-critical systems become larger and more complex, ensuring their continuous error-free operation has become a significant and important challenge. Formal methods are a potential solution to this issue but have traditionally required substantial time and expertise to deploy. This usability issue is compounded by the fact that PLCs are highly proprietary and have substantial licensing costs, making it difficult to learn about or deploy formal methods on them.

This thesis presents the …

Time-Domain Evaluation Of Atmospheric Ducting Effects On X-Band Propagation Over Water, Jack A. Gallegos Mar 2023

Time-Domain Evaluation Of Atmospheric Ducting Effects On X-Band Propagation Over Water, Jack A. Gallegos

Master's Theses

The marine atmospheric boundary layer (MABL) is the region of atmosphere that interacts with the ocean surface. The atmospheric variability (i.e. temperature and relative humidity) in this region can result in rapid changes in the refractive index with increasing height from the sea surface. The complex region can result in non-standard propagation of electromagnetic (EM) waves beyond the horizon under atmospheric ducting conditions. However, when ducting layers are not present, EM waves are limited to line-of-sight transmission. Atmospheric ducting research is typically conducted using radio frequencies in the X-band (around 8-12 GHz) due to its impact on performance of marine …
