Derivation And Application Of A Conserved Orbital Energy For The Inverted Pendulum Bipedal Walking Model, Jerry E. Pratt, Sergey V. Drakunov

Sergey V. Drakunov

We present an analysis of a point mass, point foot, planar inverted pendulum model for bipedal walking. Using this model, we derive expressions for a conserved quantity, the “Orbital Energy”, given a smooth Center of Mass trajectory. Given a closed form Center of Mass Trajectory, the equation for the Orbital Energy is a closed form expression except for an integral term, which we show to be the first moment of area under the Center of Mass path. Hence, given a Center of Mass trajectory, it is straightforward and computationally simple to compute phase portraits for the system. In fact, for …

Optimal Sensor Threshold Control And The Weapon Operating Characteristic For Autonomous Search And Attack Munitions, Roland A. Rosario Mar 2007

Optimal Sensor Threshold Control And The Weapon Operating Characteristic For Autonomous Search And Attack Munitions, Roland A. Rosario

Theses and Dissertations

This Thesis considers the optimal employment of a wide area search munition in a battlespace where a target is known to be uniformly distributed among false targets which are Poisson distributed. The Poisson distribution's parameter is obtained from readily available battlespace intelligence. This work formulates and solves the optimal control problem for deriving the optimal sensor threshold schedule in order to maximize the probability of attacking the target during the battlespace sweep while constraining the probability of attacking a false target. The efficiency gained by optimally varying the sensor threshold is compared against the performance achieved with a static, optimum …

Sampled-Data Kalman Filtering And Multiple Model Adaptive Estimation For Infinite-Dimensional Continuous-Time Systems, Scott A. Sallberg Mar 2007

Sampled-Data Kalman Filtering And Multiple Model Adaptive Estimation For Infinite-Dimensional Continuous-Time Systems, Scott A. Sallberg

Theses and Dissertations

Kalman filtering and multiple model adaptive estimation (MMAE) methods have been applied by researchers in several engineering disciplines to a multitude of problems featuring a linear (or mildly nonlinear) model based on finite-dimensional differential (or difference) equations perturbed by random inputs. However, many real-world systems are more naturally modeled using an infinite-dimensional continuous-time linear systems model, such as those most naturally modeled as partial differential equations or time-delayed differential equations along with a possibly infinite-dimensional measurement model. The Kalman filtering technique was extended to encompass infinite-dimensional continuous-time systems with sampled-data measurements and a technique to approximate an infinite-dimensional continuous-time system …

Robust And Decentralized Control Of Web Winding Systems, Wankun Zhou Jan 2007

Robust And Decentralized Control Of Web Winding Systems, Wankun Zhou

ETD Archive

This research addresses the velocity and tension regulation problems in web handling, including those found in the single element of an accumulator and those in the large-scale system settings. A continuous web winding system is a complex large-scale interconnected dynamics system with numerous tension zones to transport the web while processing it. A major challenge in controlling such systems is the unexpected disturbances that propagate through the system and affect both tension and velocity loops along the way. To solve this problem, a unique active disturbance rejection control (ADRC) strategy is proposed. Simulation results show remarkable disturbance rejection capability of …
