Permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) is a popular electric machine in industry for its small volume, high electromagnetic torque, high reliability and low cost. It is broadly used in automobiles and aircrafts. However, PMSM has its inherent problems of nonlinearity and coupling, which are challenges for control systems design. In addition, the external disturbances such as load variation and noises could degrade the systems performance. This thesis illustrates the principle and the behavior for doubly fed electric machines used in variable speed wind power systems under the balanced and unbalanced operating conditions. A generalized control method for complete stator pulsating power elimination and harmonic elimination in grid currents with adjustable power factor of a doubly fed induction generator under the unbalanced operating conditions is proposed. The theoretical analysis of this proposed control method is presented and then demonstrated by the simulation in Powersim®. The grid ride-through-fault ability by using the proposed method is also tested

This thesis presents a generalized control method for complete harmonic elimination and adjustable power factor of a grid side inverter under unbalanced operating conditions used in variable speed wind power systems. The theoretical analysis of the proposed control method is described and verified by simulation in Simulink®. Two types of traditional control methods are also explained and applied in the wind power system for comparison, which are the indirect current control in a-b-c reference frame and the active and reactive power control in d-q synchronous frame. Induction Motors (IM’s) are increasingly being considered for and used in high-performance motor drive (HPMD) systems. Their application has only gained acceptance since the 1970’s with the advent of vector control, microprocessors and improvements in power converter technology. D.C. motors were traditionally the preferred choice in HPMD systems. The main reasons for IM acceptance in HPMD systems are ruggedness, durability, low maintenance, cost, and small size by comparison with D.C. motors.

In this work, feasibility of using low cost, low resolution sensor for high performance brushless dc (BLDC) motor speed control is investigated. Conventional control, using a tachometer or high resolution encoder, suffers from drawbacks such as high cost, large physical volume, and high sensor processing bandwidth. On the other hand, sensorless BLDC motor, appealing in its hardware simplicity, does not provide sufficient fast performance. Using a standard low resolution sensor, such as a hall sensor or commutation encoder, a compromise between cost and performance can be obtained. Recognizing that the prime purpose of the 3 phase induction motor is to deliver torque with minimum line current. This thesis studies the torque as well as the current response produced by the singularity changes in the induction machine slip. It is desirable that the torque to be maximized for a given value of line current at the corresponding load slip.
