Self-Consistent Three Dimensional Models For Quantum Ballistic Transport In Open Systems, Eric Polizzi, N. Ben Abdallah Dec 2002

Self-Consistent Three Dimensional Models For Quantum Ballistic Transport In Open Systems, Eric Polizzi, N. Ben Abdallah

Eric Polizzi

A quasi-three-dimensional model for quantum ballistic transport in nanostructures is proposed. The model goes beyond the Thomas-Fermi approximation and is numerically more tractable than the full three-dimensional Schrödinger-Poisson model. Its derivation relies on the strong confinement of electrons at the heterojunction which allows us to split the three-dimensional Schrödinger equation into a one-dimensional Schrödinger equation for the confined direction and a two-dimensional Schrödinger equation in the transport direction. The space charge effects are taken into account in a three-dimensional framework. Numerical simulations of quantum waveguide devices such as T stubs and directional couplers are used to illustrate the accuracy of …

Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition (Scada) Systems, George H. Baker, Allan Berg Nov 2002

Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition (Scada) Systems, George H. Baker, Allan Berg

George H Baker

Our critical national infrastructure systems have become almost universally dependent upon computer-based control systems technically referred to as supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) systems. SCADA systems evolved from the telemetry and event-alarm systems developed in the early days of utilities. With the widespread use of SCADA systems, computers have become the "basis element" for much of our critical infrastructure. Thus, the disruption of controlling computer terminals and networks due to natural disasters, electric power failure, accidents or malicious activity can have catastrophic consequences.

Delivering On The 256 Qam Promise, Ron D. Katznelson Oct 2002

Delivering On The 256 Qam Promise, Ron D. Katznelson

Ron D. Katznelson

The accumulation of degradation factors in the downstream channels is reviewed with focus on headend/hub transmission-related noise aggregation due to a plurality of downstream Quadrature Amplitude Modulation (QAM) transmitters and upconverters. Substantial increase in the number of QAM transmitters based on frequency agile upconverters is expected. Unlike fixed channel upconverters, these do not have narrow band filters at their output, consequently imparting appreciable levels of broadband noise on the network when several such units are combined. Based on these factors and other noise contributions, it is shown that additional impairments due to fluctuations associated with composite distortion terms on the …

Abstract: this paper presents the formulation of Extended Kalman Filter, Continuous-Discreet case (C-D EKF) and his application to the determination of state of satelite orbit, verifies the performance of the algorithm when it exists a good model for the process and measurement. It is observed the influence of the passage of integration in the estimation and importance that gives to the algorithm to the predictions and measurements.

Method For Cleaning Phosphor Screens For Use With Field Emission Displays - Micron Technology Inc. (Boise, Id) - United States Patent 6409564, Jim Browning, Zhongyi Xia, David A. Cathey, Surjit S. Chadha Jun 2002

Method For Cleaning Phosphor Screens For Use With Field Emission Displays - Micron Technology Inc. (Boise, Id) - United States Patent 6409564, Jim Browning, Zhongyi Xia, David A. Cathey, Surjit S. Chadha

Jim Browning

A method for cleansing the phosphor screen of a display device comprising the removal of oxygen or sulfur from the surface of the phosphor, and/or its associated binder material, to a depth that prevents oxygen diffusion from the phosphor and/or binder, thereby creating an oxygen deficient surface on the phosphors.

Specifying And Measuring Aggregate Broadband Noise Of Catv Modulators And Upconverters, Steven I. Rubin, Andre Basovich, Brani Petrovic, Ron D. Katznelson Jun 2002

Specifying And Measuring Aggregate Broadband Noise Of Catv Modulators And Upconverters, Steven I. Rubin, Andre Basovich, Brani Petrovic, Ron D. Katznelson

Ron D. Katznelson

This paper discusses the practical limitations and the subtle assumptions that must be incorporated into the specifications and measurements of Aggregate Broadband Noise of CATV upconverters and digital QAM transmitters. Considerations that govern the accuracy and measurement dynamic range required for such Aggregate Broadband Noise measures are identified. Novel methods involving the separation of the Aggregate Broadband Noise measure into its composites, namely, modulated distortion noise components and other broadband noise components are discussed. Optimal ways in which such measurement techniques have been automated to enable rapid and efficient evaluation of transmitter devices are also presented along with examples of …

Statistical Properties Of Composite Distortions In Hfc Systems And Their Effects On Digital Channels, Ron D. Katznelson May 2002

Statistical Properties Of Composite Distortions In Hfc Systems And Their Effects On Digital Channels, Ron D. Katznelson

Ron D. Katznelson

The statistical properties of Composite Triple Beat (CTB) and Composite Second Order (CSO) distortion terms associated with the analog channels carried on Hybrid Fiber Coax (HFC) are presented. Both simulation and measurement results show that such distortion components falling on individual channels have amplitude Probability Density Function that is nearly Rayleigh distributed (having a Standard Deviation of 5.7 dB). It is shown that both CTB and CSO components have peak envelope power fluctuations that exceed their average (measured) power levels by more than 15 dB. The temporal statistical properties of these distortion components demonstrate peak envelope power fluctuations with characteristic …

Microelectronics Process Engineering At San Jose State University: A Manufacturing-Oriented Interdisciplinary Degree Program, Emily Allen, Stacy Gleixner, David W. Parent, Greg Young, Yasser Dessouky, Linda Vanasupa Mar 2002

Microelectronics Process Engineering At San Jose State University: A Manufacturing-Oriented Interdisciplinary Degree Program, Emily Allen, Stacy Gleixner, David W. Parent, Greg Young, Yasser Dessouky, Linda Vanasupa

David W. Parent

San Jose State University's new interdisciplinary curriculum in Microelectronics Process Engineering is described. This baccalaureate program emphasizes hands-on thin-film fabrication experience, manufacturing methods such as statistical process control, and fundamentals of materials science and semiconductor device physics. Each course of the core laboratory sequence integrates fabrication knowledge with process engineering and manufacturing methods. The curriculum development process relies on clearly defined and detailed program and course learning objectives. We also briefly discuss our strategy of making process engineering experiences accessible for all engineering students through both Lab Module and Statistics Module series.
