As means to further supplement athletic performances increases, virtual reality is becoming helpful to sports in terms of cognitive training such as reaction, mentality, and game strategies. With the aid of haptic feedback, interaction with virtual objects increases by another dimension, in addition to the presence of visual and auditory feedback. This research presents an integrated system of a virtual reality environment, motion tracking system, and a haptic unit designed for the dorsal foot. MEMS actuators have multiple design applications. Understanding their behavior as well as the ability to predict their actuation characteristics and voltage response is important when designing these actuators. In order to know these devices will behave, designers have to solve multiple analytical equations and experiments that can be very time consuming. Over the course of the summer a tool was created on nanoHUB that will allow users to enter information about a MEMS actuator and provide the voltage response of the actuator.   • IPMC is a type of smart material called an electroactive polymer
  • Consists of an ionic polymer such as Nafion or Flemion and a conducive metal such as platinum or gold
  • COMSOL multi-physics simulations accurately model the experimental displacement results
  • Optimization performed using the multi-physics model to find the maximum deflection, force, and twisting
  • Using the closed loop control system accurate IPMC tip location can be achieved
  • This control system has been extended to function using a computer mouse as an input
