Carbon Removal And Optoelectronic Property Tuning In Copper Arsenic Sulfide Thin Films Through Ligand Exchange And Alloying, Louis R. Schroeder, Scott Mcclary, Rakesh Agrawal

The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium

Solution processed thin film solar cells are attractive alternatives to conventional energy sources due to low waste generation, flexibility in substrate choice, and scalability. The novel semiconductor Cu3AsS4 in the enargite phase has a near ideal band gap of 1.4 eV and has earth abundant constituent elements; yet single-junction solar cells have yielded low efficiencies due to a secondary carbonaceous phase present, among other issues. This carbonaceous phase may be eliminated by exchanging the carbonaceous ligands with molecular metal chalcogenides. To characterize the ligand exchanged particles, UV-Vis-NIR spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and …

Simulating Nanoscale Optics In Photovoltaics With The S-Matrix Method, Dalton Chaffee, Xufeng Wang, Peter Bermel

The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium

In the push to build high-efficiency solar cells with less materials usage, thin-film solar cells have attracted an increasing amount of interest. Thin films are particularly attractive if they could exhibit light trapping and photon recycling capabilities exceeding those of traditional wafer-based cells. Recent work by Alta Devices demonstrating a record single-junction efficiency of 28.8% with a gallium arsenide thin film cell shows the potential. However, most existing simulation tools do not handle these properties well -- particularly photon recycling. In this work, we develop an improved solar cell simulation tool to accurately predict thin-film performance. It is based on …

Pvpanel Sim 2.0 – Pv Module Simulation With Improved Device Physics, Mario Rentería Piñón, Muhammad A. Alam

The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium

Efficiency is a crucial parameter to consider when fabricating thin film (TF) photovoltaic panels because there is a significant efficiency drop between lab scale cells and large modules. PVpanel Sim is a circuit simulation using SPICE tool which combines the effects of the major reasons of efficiency reduction, like shunt leakages and sheet resistance, with external factors like irradiance and the effects of shadowing in order to provide the user with a better understanding of how a solar panel would behave. For the current version of the tool a basic equivalent model for individual cells is used with ideal components, …
