Photodetectors are devices that capture light signals and convert them into electrical signals. High performance photodetectors are in demand in a variety of applications, such as optical communication, security, and environmental monitoring. Among many appealing nanomaterials for novel photodetection devices, graphene and semiconductor colloidal nanocrystals are promising candidates because of their desirable and unique properties compared to conventional materials.

Photodetector devices based on different types of nanostructured materials including graphene and colloidal nanocrystals were investigated. Infrared (IR) radiation spans the wavelengths of the windows: (1) near-IR region ranging from 0.8 to 1.0 μm, (2) shortwave IR (SWIR) ranging from 1.0 to 3.0 μm, (3) mid-wave IR (MWIR) region covering from 3.0 to 5.0 μm, (4) longwave IR (LWIR) spanning from 8.0 to 12.0 μm, and (5) very longwave IR extending beyond 12.0 μm. The MWIR and LWIR regions are important for night vision in the military, and since the atmosphere does not absorb at these wavelengths, they are also used for free-space communications and astronomy. UV photodetection devices have many important applications for uses in biological detection, gas sensing, weaponry detection, fire detection, chemical analysis, and many others. Today’s photodetectors often utilize semiconductors such as GaAs to achieve high responsivity and sensitivity. Zinc oxide, unlike many other semiconductors, is cheap, abundant, non-toxic, and easy to grow different morphologies at the micro and nano scale. The electronics industry has a large silicon infrastructure for the manufacture of complementary-metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) based electronics. The increasing density of Si based circuits has set a pace that is now pushing the physical limits of connectivity between devices over conventional wire based links. This has driven the increasing interest in Si based optoelectronics and to use the groundwork already established by the electronics industry for lower cost optical communications. The greatest limitation to this effort has been the incorporation of a Si based laser, which requires integration of a direct bandgap material within this CMOS process.

Room temperature operation is considered one of the essential restrictions in the design of electronic devices. Photodetectors are unable to detect light efficiently at room temperature due to high dark currents. Semiconductor nanocrystals possess unique optical and electrical properties which make them ideal for fabricating uncooled photodetectors. In this project, nanocrystals were synthesized and implemented in devices that detect light at room temperature.

Nanocrystalline I-III-VI2 and II-VI semiconductors (CuInS2 and CdSe) were grown by a wet chemical method, and characterized using: optical absorption, photoluminescence, Raman scattering, and x-ray diffraction. Photodetectors based various nanostructures and plasmon enhanced solar cells are investigated in this dissertation. The motivation of the dissertation rise is driven by urgent need of both high efficiency photodetectors and solar cells.

First, quantum dot infrared photodetectors have been intensely investigated due to their promise in high performance photodetectors. However, the strain-driven growth of quantum dots has hindered the progress of quantum dot photodetectors. The presence of strain in the device presents complexity in designing as well as defects. Therefore, in this project, new designs of quantum dot photodetector structures are presented to improve the control over detection wavelength. …
