Power-Weighted Divergences For Relative Attenuation And Delay Estimation, Ruairí De Fréin, Scott T. Rickard Prof Nov 2016

Power-Weighted Divergences For Relative Attenuation And Delay Estimation, Ruairí De Fréin, Scott T. Rickard Prof

Articles

Power-weighted estimators have recently been proposed for relative attenuation and delay estimation in blind source separation. Their provenance lies in the observation that speech is approximately windowed-disjoint orthogonal (WDO) in the time-frequency (TF) domain; it has been reported that using WDO, derived from TF representations of speech, improves mixing parameter estimation. We show that power-weighted relative attenuation and delay estimators can be derived from a particular case of a weighted Bregman divergence. We then propose a wider class of estimators, which we tune to give better parameter estimates for speech.

Pattern Reconfigurable Back-To-Back Microstrip Patch Antenna, Kansheng Yang, Xiulong Bao, Patrick Mcevoy, Max Ammann

Articles

A back-to- back microstrip patch antenna with a switchable pattern is proposed for WLAN applications. The patch elements, printed on FR-4 substrates with a common ground plane, are switched with a single-pole double-throw PIN diode circuit. Switching the feed selects either of two identical radiation patterns in the opposing hemispheres for spatial diversity that would benefit a distributed network.

Optical Wavelength Ratiometric Monitoring System For Data Centre Cwdm Applications, Anthony Colohan, Thomas Freir, Derek Finlay

Conference papers

The development of the internet and the subsequent increase in the quantity of connected devices in recent years has given rise to an explosion in demand of data traffic across telecommunication networks. Converged networks deliver high speed bit rates for the purpose of streaming videos, downloading music files and communicating over the internet; voice over internet protocol (VOIP). Further additional data traffic growth stemming from the upsurge in the amount of ‘tweets’ and instant messages (IM) created as well as emails written and cloud storage, has led to a demand for the construction of much larger data centres, which …

Energy Managment Of Photovoltaic Charging Station (Pv-Cs) For Green University Campus Transportation, Ayda Esfandyari, Brian Norton, Michael Conlon, Sarah Mccormack

Conference Papers

Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs) have been recognised as the ideal solution for lowering the CO2 emissions in the transport sector and helping to achieve a sustainable future. When BEV technology is leveraged with a solar energy source such as a Photovoltaic Charging Station (PV-CS), the CO2 saving potential is extended to both generation and consumption points. Due to the intermittent nature of our solar resource, once the PV-CS is combined with a storage unit, energy production is achieved without risking the disruption to power supply reliability and quality. Technological University Dublin (DIT) has recognised the viability of this …

Bitrate Classification Of Twice-Encoded Audio Using Objective Quality Features, Colm Sloan, Damien Kelly, Naomi Harte, Anil C. Kokaram, Andrew Hines Jun 2016

Bitrate Classification Of Twice-Encoded Audio Using Objective Quality Features, Colm Sloan, Damien Kelly, Naomi Harte, Anil C. Kokaram, Andrew Hines

Conference papers

When a user uploads audio files to a music stream- ing service, these files are subsequently re-encoded to lower bitrates to target different devices, e.g. low bitrate for mobile. To save time and bandwidth uploading files, some users encode their original files using a lossy codec. The metadata for these files cannot always be trusted as users might have encoded their files more than once. Determining the lowest bitrate of the files allows the streaming service to skip the process of encoding the files to bitrates higher than that of the uploaded files, saving on processing and storage space. This …

Source Separation Approach To Video Quality Prediction In Computer Networks, Ruairí De Fréin May 2016

Source Separation Approach To Video Quality Prediction In Computer Networks, Ruairí De Fréin

Articles

Time-varying loads introduce errors in the estimated model parameters of service-level predictors in Computer Networks. A load-adjusted modification of a traditional unadjusted service-level predictor is contributed, based on Source Separation (SS). It mitigates these errors and improves service-quality predictions for Video-on-Demand (VoD) by :6 to 2dB.

Gravity As An Ultra-Low Frequency Scattering Efect, Jonathan Blackledge

Articles

Under the weak gravitational field appromination and for the 00-component of the stress-energy tensor, Einstein's field equations for the gravitational potential. By considering Newton' field equation to be the result of an ultra-low frequency scattering effect (in the limiting) case, this work introduces a model where gravitational field is taken to be the result of an ultra-low frequency gravitational wave (propagating in a near-Cartesian Minkowski space) scattering from an object (a mass)

Time Series Analysis For A 1/Tb Memory Function And Comparison With The Lyapunov Exponent Using Volatility Scaling, Paddy Walsh, Jonathan Blackledge

Articles

Being able to provide accurate forecasts on the trending behaviour of time series is important in a range of applications involving the real time evolution of signals, most notable in financial time series analysis but control engineering in general. A critical solution for providing high accuracy forecasts is the filtering operation used to identify the position in time at which a trend occurs subject to a time delay factor that is inherent in the filtering strategy used. The paper explores this strategy and presents some example results that provide a quantitative measure of the accuracy used.

Optimized Sliding Mode Control To Maximize Existence Region For Single-Phase Dynamic Voltage Restorers, Samet Biricik, Hasan Komurcugil

Articles

This paper presents an optimized sliding mode control (SMC) strategy to maximize existence region for single-phase dynamic voltage restorers. It is shown analytically that there exists an optimum sliding coefficient which enlarges the existence region of the sliding mode to its maximum. Also, it is pointed out that the optimum sliding coefficient improves the dynamic response. In addition, a double-band hysteresis control which ensures the switching of a transistor in the voltage source inverter during a half-cycle while it remains either on or off in the other half cycle is used to mitigate the switching frequency. The theoretical considerations and …

A Two-Level Identity Model To Support Interoperability Of Identity Information In Electronic Health Record Systems., Xu Chen Jan 2016

A Two-Level Identity Model To Support Interoperability Of Identity Information In Electronic Health Record Systems., Xu Chen

Doctoral

The sharing and retrieval of health information for an electronic health record (EHR) across distributed systems involves a range of identified entities that are possible subjects of documentation (e.g., specimen, clinical analyser). Contemporary EHR specifications limit the types of entities that can be the subject of a record to health professionals and patients, thus limiting the use of two level models in healthcare information systems that contribute information to the EHR. The literature describes several information modelling approaches for EHRs, including so called “two level models”. These models differ in the amount of structure imposed on the information to be …

High performance all-optical quantizer based on silicon waveguide is believed to have significant applications in photonic integratable optical communication links, optical interconnection networks and real-time signal processing systems. In this paper, we propose an integratable all-optical quantizer for on-chip and low power consumption all-optical analog-to-digital converters. The quantization is realized by the strong cross-phase modulation and interference in a silicon-organic hybrid (SOH) slot waveguide based Mach-Zehnder interferometer. By carefully designing the dimension of the SOH waveguide, large nonlinear coefficients up to 16,000 and 18,069 W−1/m for the pump and probe signals can be obtained respectively, along with a low pulse …

Using Photovoltaics To Power Electrochemical Chloride Extraction From Concrete, Sean Bond, Lynette O'Callaghan, Niall Holmes Dr., Brian Norton

Conference papers

Corrosion of embedded steel in reinforced concrete (RC) is a world-wide problem, that reduces structural performance and lifespan. Chloride attack may be a result of seawater, de-icing salts or contaminated admixtures, brought on by ingress of chlorides into the concrete. Electrochemical Chloride Extraction (ECE) is a non-destructive treatment for contaminated RC structures, that due to uncertainty of treatment times and applied current densities, is only 50% effective. It is often diesel powered has an environmental impact and often very costly due to the long treatment times. To improve the efficiency of ECE the influences of concrete resistance, cement type and …

Solar Photovoltaic System Control Topology Investigation For Power Source Mismatch, Lynette O'Callaghan Jan 2016

Solar Photovoltaic System Control Topology Investigation For Power Source Mismatch, Lynette O'Callaghan

Conference papers

An investigation into solar photovoltaic (PV) system control topology selection, when partial shade is anticipated in the solar array, is presented. As available area is maximised in Building Integrated PV (BIPV) systems, shading is an inevitable consequence. The presence of partial shading in a PV array leads to multiple power peaks in the power-voltage curve, due to bypass diode sections being triggered, and an increase in module mismatch losses in the array. A building energy design software, Integrated Environmental Solutions, is used to determine the shadowed area on PV modules throughout the year, incorporating the PV system location and geometrical …

Ultra-Wideband Antennas, Max Ammann, Matthias John, Giuseppe Ruvio Jan 2016

Ultra-Wideband Antennas, Max Ammann, Matthias John, Giuseppe Ruvio

Books/Book chapters

The focus of UWB antenna research activity has matured in recent years and currently mainly concentrates on applications such as biomedicine and security. Early UWB antenna designs were driven by the FCC allocation of spectrum in 2002 and focussed on obtaining wide impedance bandwidths with reasonable group delay characteristics. Many of these were simple planar monopoles antennas with canonical geometries. The emergence of new applications channelled the emphasis towards miniaturisation and integration into devices. This required optimisation of the antenna geometries to ensure that good system performance is achieved from the integrated antenna. Many optimisation techniques are available including the …

Porous Silica Coated Spherical Microresonator For Vapor Phase Sensing Of Ammonia At A Sub-Ppm Level, Arun Kumar Mallik, Gerald Farrell, Dejun Liu, Vishnan Kavungal, Qiang Wu, Yuliya Semenova

Conference Papers

A new type of fiber optic sensor for detection and quantification of ammonia (NH3) vapors is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. This sensor is based on a spherical silica micro resonator coated with porous silica gel. Whispering gallery modes (WGMs) in the micro resonator are excited by evanescent coupling to a tapered fiber with a 3.3 µm waist diameter. The optical properties of the porous silica layer change when it is exposed to ammonia vapor, leading to a spectral shift of the WGM resonant wavelengths. The sensitivity of the proposed sensor has been tested by exposing it to different low level …

Simultaneous Rotation And Distance Measurement Using Multiband Circularly Polarized Radio Link, Adam Narbudowicz Jan 2016

Simultaneous Rotation And Distance Measurement Using Multiband Circularly Polarized Radio Link, Adam Narbudowicz

Conference Papers

The paper proposes a method for simultaneous measurement of rotation and distance by using a multi-band circularly polarized radio links. The method is realized using a standard dual-band patch antenna, operating at 1.58 GHz and 2.27 GHz, with respective axial ratios of 1.7 dB and 1.0 dB. Both link distance and antenna rotation were varied from a reference position/orientation from -40 mm to +40 mm and from 0° to 360°, producing a total set of 125 samples. For a noiseless link the distance change and rotation were predicted with respective mean errors of 1.9 mm and 7.3°.

The Accuracy Of A 2d And 3d Dendritic Tip Scaling Parameter In Predicting The Columnar To Equiaxed Transition (Cet), M. Seredynski, Marek Rebow, J. Banaszek Jan 2016

The Accuracy Of A 2d And 3d Dendritic Tip Scaling Parameter In Predicting The Columnar To Equiaxed Transition (Cet), M. Seredynski, Marek Rebow, J. Banaszek

Conference papers

The dendrite tip kinetics model accuracy relies on the reliability of the stability constant used, which is usually experimentally determined for 3D situations and applied to 2D models. The paper reports authors` attempts to cure the situation by deriving 2D dendritic tip scaling parameter for aluminium-based alloy: Al-4wt%Cu. The obtained parameter is then incorporated into the KGT dendritic growth model in order to compare it with the original 3D KGT counterpart and to derive two-dimensional and three-dimensional versions of the modified Hunt’s analytical model for the columnar-to-equiaxed transition (CET). The conclusions drawn from the above analysis are further confirmed through …

Comparative Study Between Direct Load Control And Fuzzy Logic Control Based Demand Response, Chittesth Veni Chandran, Malabika Basu, Keith Sunderland Jan 2016

Comparative Study Between Direct Load Control And Fuzzy Logic Control Based Demand Response, Chittesth Veni Chandran, Malabika Basu, Keith Sunderland

Conference papers

Demand response (DR), as part of Demand side management (DSM), is a method that modifies consumer side energy consumption. By actively controlling the time associated with electricity consumption, both energy and economic efficiencies are increased. There is however, depending on the algorithm employed, potential for consumer comfort levels to be adversely affected. Generally direct load (Boolean logic) control is employed, which solely considers demand reduction and not customer comfort. In comparison, fuzzy logic based programs can consider non-deterministic inputs such as consumer comfort level with ease and simplicity. This paper considers the evolution of DR through a comparison of the …
