Electro-Optic Modulator, Microwave Photonic Link Including An Electro-Optic Modulator, And Method Of Communicating A Signal With An Electro-Optic Modulator, Christopher T. Middlebrook, Arash Hosseinzadeh
Michigan Tech Patents
An electro-optic modulator coupled to an optical source providing an optical power and a radio frequency source providing a radio frequency power. The electro-optic modulator includes a waveguide to receive the optical power, a first ring resonator modulator, and a second ring resonator modulator. The first ring resonator modulator and the second ring resonator modulator receives the radio frequency power, and are coupled to the waveguide for modulating the optical power with the radio frequency power. The first ring resonator modulator and the second ring resonator modulator, with the waveguide, substantially suppress third order intermodulation distortion of a combined power. …

Method To Provide Meta-Stable Operation Of Dc Microgrid Comprising A Pulsed Load, David G. Wilson, Wayne Weaver, Rush D. Robinett Iii, Ronald Matthews, Steven F. Glover
Michigan Tech Patents
A Hamiltonian surface shaping power flow control (HSSPFC) method is used to analyze the meta-stability and adjust pulsed power loads on a DC electric power distribution network. Pulsed power loads are nonlinear, time-variant systems that cause nonlinear limit-cycles. During the on periods of a pulsed load, the system can be in an unstable state and is damped back to stability during the off state of the load. Therefore, over the entire period of the pulse the system may only be assessed as meta-stable. As shown through simulation, HIL and hardware results, the HSSPFC method is more accurate than the other …

Autonomy At The End Of The Earth, Jeremy P. Bos
Autonomy At The End Of The Earth, Jeremy P. Bos
TechTalks
Despite press accounts to the contrary, significant challenges remain in the development of true autonomous vehicles. Though these challenges are many and varied my research focuses on two areas. First, operation of autonomous vehicles in inclement weather with emphasis on ice and snow. The other focus is on developing functionally safe mobility solutions. In this talk, I will briefly describe some approaches I am developing to solving these challenges.
Multi-Sensor Fusion On Mobile Platforms, Timothy C. Havens
Multi-Sensor Fusion On Mobile Platforms, Timothy C. Havens
TechTalks
An important goal for many mobile platforms---terrestrial, aquatic, or airborne---is reliable, accurate, and on-time sensing of the world around them. The PRIME Lab has been investigating multi-sensor fusion for many applications, including explosive hazard detection and infrastructure inspection, from terrestrial vehicles and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). New developments in multi-sensor fusion using radars, imaging sensors, and LIDAR will be discussed that encompass advancements from novel signal processing approaches for mobile ground-penetrating radar to more theoretical approaches for optimal fusion of measurements from multi-modal sensors. This talk will explore the area of sensor-fusion both from a practical, application-focused standpoint and also …

Superior Analyzer For Raman Spectra With High Acceptance Cone, Resolution, Transmission, And Quantum Efficiency, And Strong Background Reduction, Manfred Fink, Philip Varghese, Jacek Borysow
Michigan Tech Patents
A Raman analyzer for analyzing light emitted from a Raman cell is provided that has a beam splitter configured to split the light emitted from the Raman cell into a first beam and a second beam. An atomic vapor filter can be used to filter a Raman scattered line from the first beam and a chopper system can periodically interrupt the first and second beams that are directed towards a photo detector, which can convert light from the first and second beams into an electrical signal. The signal output from the photo detector can optionally be amplified, digitized, Fourier filtered, …
