Speech delivered by WKU president Gary Ransdell at the National Governor's Association Center for Best Practices. In response to Governor Patton's challenges to create Programs of Distinction and enhance the state's capacity for economic development, we, at Western, have created a series of applied science centers. These centers are directing faculty talent toward creating a relevant curriculum in the sciences, toward solving environmental and material problems which limit economic development, and toward creating practice-based experiences for students. A by-product of these centers is a strengthened core curriculum which brings the applied sciences into focus for all WKU students.

Evaporative Cooling Availability In Water Based Sensible Cooling Systems, Ben Costelloe, Donal Finn
Evaporative Cooling Availability In Water Based Sensible Cooling Systems, Ben Costelloe, Donal Finn
Conference Papers
Recent developments have prompted a review of evaporative cooling technology as an effective means of cooling modern deep plan buildings. Prominent among these developments is the success of high temperature sensible cooling systems, such as chilled ceilings, which require a supply of cooling water at 14 to 18°C. Crucial to the success of evaporative cooling technology, as a significant means of cooling in modern applications, is the ability to generate cooling water, in an indirect circuit, at a temperature which closely approaches the ambient adiabatic saturation temperature or wet bulb temperature. Recent research in this area has shown that it …

Retention Of Female Faculty Members, Susan L. Murray, Mariesa Crow, Suzanna M. Rose
Engineering Management and Systems Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
The recruitment and the retention of female undergraduate and graduate students into engineering courses is discussed. A similar challenge lies in recruiting female faculty member from the limited pool of candidates in several fields at most universities. It is found that about half the females who were hired did not stay at the university. It is suggested that programs should be introduced to encourage mentoring and career development as such improvements would benefit all faculty members both female and male.

A Multimedia Based Laboratory Course For Environmental Engineering Fundamentals And Process Design, Lynn E. Katz, Lenly Weathers
University of Maine Office of Research Administration: Grant Reports
Many undergraduate environmental engineering curricula across the nation are being re-designed to emphasize fundamentals of environmental engineering process dynamics and to acquire familiarity with the procedures for obtaining and determining design parameters for design of full scale systems for treatment and remediation of water and wastewater. The objective of this proposal is to build on the P.I.s' previous course development efforts by developing and promoting the use of multi-media learning tools for undergraduate education. Specifically, the proposal will focus on the development of interactive multi-media laboratory modules for a course titled "Pollutant Fate and Transport." The modules will include did …

Flowers For The World: Developing A Business Game To Support The Teaching Of Is Concepts, Trevor T. Moores, Jerry Cha-Jan Chang
Flowers For The World: Developing A Business Game To Support The Teaching Of Is Concepts, Trevor T. Moores, Jerry Cha-Jan Chang
Management, Entrepreneurship and Technology Faculty Publications
One of the key problems in teaching fundamental concepts in information systems is how to ground the theory in experiences that the students can relate to. To overcome this problem, a business game called Flowers For The World has been developed and used across a wide variety of IS courses. This paper will describe the game and the result of using it for a 300-level course in analysis and design. The possibility exists that the game could be developed to provide a common business foundation across all business school curricula.

Global Engineering In An Interconnected World: An Upper Division General Education Cluster At Old Dominion University, Sushil Chaturvedi, Gary Crossman, William Swart, Joseph Betit
Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Faculty Publications
The “Global Engineering in an Interconnected World” cluster of courses fosters among students an awareness and understanding of global technology, quality assurance standards, and differences in cultural, communication, and business practices and their impact on a global work environment. This cluster will prepare the growing numbers of students who will accept employment with global firms or find themselves part of a merger or strategic alliance involving multinational corporations. This newly approved cluster of five courses described in the paper has been approved by the University for satisfying University upper-division general education requirements. As a consequence, students choosing this route to …

Prototype Development For A Leak-Preventive Toilet Flush System- An Met Senior Design (Capstone) Project, Cheng Y. Lin
Engineering Technology Faculty Publications
A senior design (Capstone) project for three mechanical engineering technology students at Old Dominion University is described. A prototype design is presented to perform the functional test of a leak-preventive toilet system. There are two major leaks in the toilet water tank. In the first case, leaking occurs when the seal in the water tank becomes aged. The leak is very easy to detect visually, since the outside of the tank and the floor becomes wet. In the second case, leak occurs when the flapper valve can't complete shut off the water, due to corrosion or damage of the rubber …

The test data contained in this report are a tabulation of the results of a series of tests. Due to the restricted format of these pages, only a limited amount of data and not all of the tractor specifications are included. The full OECD report contains usually about 30 pages of data and specifications. The test data were obtained for each tractor under similar conditions and therefore, provide a means of comparison of performance based on a limited set of reported data.
