Design And Construction Of Drilled Shafts For Landslides, Malek Smadi Mar 2020

Design And Construction Of Drilled Shafts For Landslides, Malek Smadi

Purdue Road School

In general, weathered shale underlain by shale interbedded with limestone is the main forma-tion that underlies many of the slopes adjacent to the Ohio River in southern Indiana. During wet periods the weathered shale exhibits a sig-nificant decrease in strength, which has led to a number of landslides. In this session several case histories will be presented where drilled shafts have been used to repair and improve the safety of homes and roadways.

Plant Growth Layer: Recurring Special Provision 629-R-630, Kurt Pelz, Shawn Slaymon Mar 2020

Plant Growth Layer: Recurring Special Provision 629-R-630, Kurt Pelz, Shawn Slaymon

Purdue Road School

This presentation encapsulates everything from what plant growth layer is and how it was developed to when it should be added to projects, its proper verification, and estimating PGL quantities. This presentation will also include project-specific examples of the limitations and expectations of PGL during the design and construction phase.

Waterproofing Membrane For Concrete Boxes And Culverts, Keith Alan Lytton P.E., Jeremy Hunter P.E. Mar 2020

Waterproofing Membrane For Concrete Boxes And Culverts, Keith Alan Lytton P.E., Jeremy Hunter P.E.

Purdue Road School

In 2019 a new INDOT Specification went into effect for waterproofing on concrete pipes and three- and four-sided boxes. The new specification decreased the leakage at these structures joints from 95% to less than 5%. This presentation will provide the background on why the change was needed and the solution, complete with construction examples and results.

The Future State Of Mobility, Jerome Quandt Mar 2020

The Future State Of Mobility, Jerome Quandt

Purdue Road School

Formed in 2018, the Illinois Autonomous Vehicles Association (ILAVA) is a privately funded non-for-profit organization focused on establishing thought leadership in the state of Illinois, by identifying and addressing the current and emerging opportunities related to the inevitable growth of CAV technologies throughout the transportation network. Through the deployment of scalable and sustainable business solutions, facilitating industry education and establishing thought leadership, ILAVA is creating an ecosystem that defines Illinois as #TheFutureStateofMobility.

Dnr Permitting From A Consultant’S Perspective: Construction In A Floodway, Paul Brayton, Nicole Reed Mar 2020

Dnr Permitting From A Consultant’S Perspective: Construction In A Floodway, Paul Brayton, Nicole Reed

Purdue Road School

When working near a river or stream, it is likely that a Construction in a Floodway (CIF) permit will be required. Consultants submitting permits to regulatory agencies can encounter costly delays trying to get them approved. This presentation will focus on the best practices to help streamline the permitting process by walking through the permitting process from a consultant’s perspective, including what projects need a CIF permit, and when to submit.

Strategies And How-Tos On Interstate Closures For Mot, Jim Poturalski, Eryn Fletcher Mar 2020

Strategies And How-Tos On Interstate Closures For Mot, Jim Poturalski, Eryn Fletcher

Purdue Road School

Full interstate closures have proven to be an effective method for balancing congestion and safety when maintaining interstate infrastructure. This presentation will describe successful practices, federal requirements, and the process to follow when closing an interstate for maintenance.

Unique Utility Coordination, Bill Read, Thomas Randall, Corey Baugh Mar 2020

Unique Utility Coordination, Bill Read, Thomas Randall, Corey Baugh

Purdue Road School

This session presents constructibility problems associated with raising a bridge about 9 feet under a 765 KV line. The solution for how to work under the line while complying with OSHA requirements, utility company coordination requirements, and the overall construction schedule was difficult: shut down the power line for construction, which had to be coordinated within a narrow window and also funded. Join us for a discussion.

Six Pillars Of Utility Engineering, Cesar Quiroga, Natalie Parks Mar 2020

Six Pillars Of Utility Engineering, Cesar Quiroga, Natalie Parks

Purdue Road School

The Utility Engineering and Surveying Institute (UESI), the newest Institute within the American Society of Civil Engineers, has adopted and strongly promotes the six pillars of utility engineering. This presentation will discuss how each pillar is critical to successful project delivery and how the six pillars can be incorporated into our projects.

City Of Elkhart - Ada Data Collection And Transition Plan Implementation, Jeffrey Schaffer, Rachel Page Mar 2020

City Of Elkhart - Ada Data Collection And Transition Plan Implementation, Jeffrey Schaffer, Rachel Page

Purdue Road School

Over a 5-year period, the City of Elkhart col-lected detailed data on nearly 4,000 curb ramps. The City is now using that data to plan and fund ADA improvements within the public right-of-way. This presentation will discuss how to look at an overwhelming task such as ADA compli-ance in the right-of-way and develop a plan to manage it.
