Integration Of Matlab And Machine Learning To Accelerate Evaluation Of Biological Activity In Agricultural Soils And Promote Soil Health Improvement Goals, Andrew Stiven Ortiz Balsero Aug 2024

Integration Of Matlab And Machine Learning To Accelerate Evaluation Of Biological Activity In Agricultural Soils And Promote Soil Health Improvement Goals, Andrew Stiven Ortiz Balsero

Department of Biological Systems Engineering: Dissertations and Theses

Traditionally, assessments of soil biological activity have been confined to laboratory settings, creating a disconnect with practical in-field methods. To bridge this gap, cotton fabric degradation has been used to illustrate soil microbial activity under different management practices. While effective, these demonstrations are subjective and labor-intensive.

Researchers have explored using image processing software like ImageJ and Adobe Photoshop to streamline this process. Although these tools accurately quantified fabric degradation under varying soil conditions, the methods remained labor-intensive and complex. Consequently, these methods were still not ideal for on-farm use by agricultural practitioners.

To further address labor and complexity limitations, the …

Multimodal Fusion For Audio-Image And Video Action Recognition, Muhammad B. Shaikh, Douglas Chai, Syed M. S. Islam, Naveed Akhtar Jan 2024

Multimodal Fusion For Audio-Image And Video Action Recognition, Muhammad B. Shaikh, Douglas Chai, Syed M. S. Islam, Naveed Akhtar

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Multimodal Human Action Recognition (MHAR) is an important research topic in computer vision and event recognition fields. In this work, we address the problem of MHAR by developing a novel audio-image and video fusion-based deep learning framework that we call Multimodal Audio-Image and Video Action Recognizer (MAiVAR). We extract temporal information using image representations of audio signals and spatial information from video modality with the help of Convolutional Neutral Networks (CNN)-based feature extractors and fuse these features to recognize respective action classes. We apply a high-level weights assignment algorithm for improving audio-visual interaction and convergence. This proposed fusion-based framework utilizes …

Image segmentation is the core computer vision problem for identifying objects within a scene. Segmentation is a challenging task because the prediction for each pixel label requires contextual information. Most recent research deals with the segmentation of natural images rather than drawings. However, there is very little research on sketched image segmentation. In this study, we introduce heuristic (point-shooting) and deep learning-based methods (U-Net, HR-Net, MedT, DETR) to segment technical drawings in US patent documents. Our proposed methods on the US Patent dataset achieved over 90% accuracy where transformer performs well with 97% segmentation accuracy, which is promising and computationally …

In this paper, a hybrid neural network (HNN) that combines a convolutional neural network (CNN) and long short-term memory neural network (LSTM) is proposed to extract the high-level characteristics of materials for critical temperature (Tc) prediction of superconductors. Firstly, by obtaining 73,452 inorganic compounds from the Materials Project (MP) database and building an atomic environment matrix, we obtained a vector representation (atomic vector) of 87 atoms by singular value decomposition (SVD) of the atomic environment matrix. Then, the obtained atom vector was used to implement the coded representation of the superconductors in the order of the atoms in the chemical …

Machine Learning Assisted Gait Analysis For The Determination Of Handedness In Able-Bodied People, Hugh Gallagher Jan 2020

Machine Learning Assisted Gait Analysis For The Determination Of Handedness In Able-Bodied People, Hugh Gallagher

Dissertations

This study has investigated the potential application of machine learning for video analysis, with a view to creating a system which can determine a person’s hand laterality (handedness) from the way that they walk (their gait). To this end, the convolutional neural network model VGG16 underwent transfer learning in order to classify videos under two ‘activities’: “walking left-handed” and “walking right-handed”. This saw varying degrees of success across five transfer learning trained models: Everything – the entire dataset; FiftyFifty – the dataset with enough right-handed samples removed to produce a set with parity between activities; Female – only the female …

Comparison Of Object Detection And Patch-Based Classification Deep Learning Models On Mid- To Late-Season Weed Detection In Uav Imagery, Arun Narenthiran Veeranampalayam Sivakumar, Jiating Li, Stephen Scott, Eric T. Psota, Amit J. Jhala, Joe D. Luck, Yeyin Shi

Department of Biological Systems Engineering: Papers and Publications

Mid- to late-season weeds that escape from the routine early-season weed management threaten agricultural production by creating a large number of seeds for several future growing seasons. Rapid and accurate detection of weed patches in field is the first step of site-specific weed management. In this study, object detection-based convolutional neural network models were trained and evaluated over low-altitude unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) imagery for mid- to late-season weed detection in soybean fields. The performance of two object detection models, Faster RCNN and the Single Shot Detector (SSD), were evaluated and compared in terms of weed detection performance using mean …

Performance Comparison Of Hybrid Cnn-Svm And Cnn-Xgboost Models In Concrete Crack Detection, Sahana Thiyagarajan Jan 2019

Performance Comparison Of Hybrid Cnn-Svm And Cnn-Xgboost Models In Concrete Crack Detection, Sahana Thiyagarajan

Dissertations

Detection of cracks mainly has been a sort of essential step in visual inspection involved in construction engineering as it is the commonly used building material and cracks in them is an early sign of de-basement. It is hard to find cracks by a visual check for the massive structures. So, the development of crack detecting systems generally has been a critical issue. The utilization of contextual image processing in crack detection is constrained, as image data usually taken under real-world situations vary widely and also includes the complex modelling of cracks and the extraction of handcrafted features. Therefore the …
