Design And Development Of An Immersive Simulation For Social Determinants Of Health Training, Lahari Surapaneni Jan 2019

Design And Development Of An Immersive Simulation For Social Determinants Of Health Training, Lahari Surapaneni

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

This thesis research project focuses on design and development of an immersion simulation-based training tool that help raise the social determinants of health (SDOH) awareness among the health care providers. Compared to existing classroom lecture and/or role-play based SDOH education approach, our immersion-simulation based approach provides an easy access and highly realistic experience to such training curriculum at anytime and anywhere with an Internet connection. Such an interactive and immersive exposure is critical to raise SDOH awareness and maintain long-lasting empathy towards actual patients in practice, and thus help providers to be better prepared when encountering with those patients. Particularly, …

Development Of Visualization-Animation Software For Learning Transportation Algorithms, Ivan P. Makohon Jul 2016

Development Of Visualization-Animation Software For Learning Transportation Algorithms, Ivan P. Makohon

Computational Modeling & Simulation Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Recognizing the steady decline in US Science Technology Engineering Mathematics (STEM) interests and enrollments, the National Science Foundation (NSF) and the White House have developed national strategies and provided significant budget resources to STEM education research [1-2] in the past years, with the ultimate goals being to improve both the quality and number of highly trained US educators, student workforce in STEM topics, in today’s highly competitive global markets. With the explosion of the internet’s capability and availability, it is even more critical to effectively train this future USA-STEM work-force and/or to develop effective STEM related teaching tools to reach …

A Distributed Map Animation Framework For Spatiotemporal Datasets, Ahmet Sayar Jan 2016

A Distributed Map Animation Framework For Spatiotemporal Datasets, Ahmet Sayar

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Maps are an excellent way to present data that have spatial components. However, when the data being presented vary over time, a simple two-dimensional map ignores an important feature of the data. An animated map that shows a series of two-dimensional maps at successive points in time allows one to add a time dimension to the display of data. The current study proposes a distributed service-oriented architecture to create map animations from spatiotemporal datasets. We extend the open standards GIS web services definitions with a topic-based publish-subscribe paradigm, which best suits the animation requirements. The effectiveness of the technique is …

Java Based Visualization And Animation For Teaching The Dijkstra Shortest Path Algorithm In Transportation Networks, Ivan Makohon, Duc T. Nguyen, Masha Sosonkina, Yuzhong Shen, Manwo Ng Jan 2016

Java Based Visualization And Animation For Teaching The Dijkstra Shortest Path Algorithm In Transportation Networks, Ivan Makohon, Duc T. Nguyen, Masha Sosonkina, Yuzhong Shen, Manwo Ng

Civil & Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications

Shortest path (SP) algorithms, such as the popular Dijkstra algorithm has been considered as the "basic building blocks" for many advanced transportation network models. Dijkstra algorithm will find the shortest time (ST) and the corresponding SP to travel from a source node to a destination node. Applications of SP algorithms include real-time GPS and the Frank-Wolfe network equilibrium.

For transportation engineering students, the Dijkstra algorithm is not easily understood. This paper discusses the design and development of a software that will help the students to fully understand the key components involved in the Dijkstra SP algorithm. The software presents an …

A-Maze-D: Advanced Maze Development Kit Using Constraint Databases, Shruti Daggumarti, Peter Revesz, Corey Svehla Oct 2015

A-Maze-D: Advanced Maze Development Kit Using Constraint Databases, Shruti Daggumarti, Peter Revesz, Corey Svehla

CSE Conference and Workshop Papers

In this paper, we describe the A-Maze-D system which shows that constraint databases can be applied conveniently and efficiently to the design of maze games. A-Maze-D provides a versatile set of features by a combination of a MATLAB library and the MLPQ constraint database system. A-Maze-D is the first system that uses constraint databases to build maze games and opens new ideas in video game development.

Pen-Based Methods For Recognition And Animation Of Handwritten Physics Solutions, Salman Cheema Jan 2014

Pen-Based Methods For Recognition And Animation Of Handwritten Physics Solutions, Salman Cheema

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

There has been considerable interest in constructing pen-based intelligent tutoring systems due to the natural interaction metaphor and low cognitive load afforded by pen-based interaction. We believe that pen-based intelligent tutoring systems can be further enhanced by integrating animation techniques. In this work, we explore methods for recognizing and animating sketched physics diagrams. Our methodologies enable an Intelligent Tutoring System (ITS) to understand the scenario and requirements posed by a given problem statement and to couple this knowledge with a computational model of the student's handwritten solution. These pieces of information are used to construct meaningful animations and feedback mechanisms …

Exercise Power Grid Display And Web Interface, Alexander (Alex) Chernetz Dec 2009

Exercise Power Grid Display And Web Interface, Alexander (Alex) Chernetz

Computer Engineering

The 2008-2009 expansion of the Recreation Center at Cal Poly includes three new rooms with cardiovascular fitness equipment. As part of its ongoing commitment to sustainable development, the new machines connect to the main power grid and generate power during a workout. This document explains the process of quantifying and expressing the power generated using two interfaces: an autonomous display designed for a television with a text size and amount of detail adaptable to multiple television sizes and viewing distances, and an interactive, more detailed Web interface accessible with any Java-capable computer system or browser.
