Online/Incremental Learning To Mitigate Concept Drift In Network Traffic Classification, Alberto R. De La Rosa
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Communication networks play a large role in our everyday lives. COVID19 pandemic in 2020 highlighted their importance as most jobs had to be moved to remote work environments. It is possible that the spread of the virus, the death toll, and the economic consequences would have been much worse without communication networks. To remove sole dependence on one equipment vendor, networks are heterogeneous by design. Due to this, as well as their increasing size, network management has become overwhelming for network managers. For this reason, automating network management will have a significant positive impact. Machine learning and software defined networking …

Design Of Environment Aware Planning Heuristics For Complex Navigation Objectives, Carter D. Bailey
Design Of Environment Aware Planning Heuristics For Complex Navigation Objectives, Carter D. Bailey
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
A heuristic is the simplified approximations that helps guide a planner in deducing the best way to move forward. Heuristics are valued in many modern AI algorithms and decision-making architectures due to their ability to drastically reduce computation time. Particularly in robotics, path planning heuristics are widely leveraged to aid in navigation and exploration. As the robotic platform explores and navigates, information about the world can and should be used to augment and update the heuristic to guide solutions. Complex heuristics that can account for environmental factors, robot capabilities, and desired actions provide optimal results with little wasted exploration, but …

To fully cure the specimens after fabrication, a UV chamber was used. Then, measurements …
Generative Spatio-Temporal And Multimodal Analysis Of Neonatal Pain, Md Sirajus Salekin
Generative Spatio-Temporal And Multimodal Analysis Of Neonatal Pain, Md Sirajus Salekin
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Neonates can not express their pain like an adult person. Due to the lacking of proper muscle growth and inability to express non-verbally, it is difficult to understand their emotional status. In addition, if the neonates are under any treatment or left monitored after any major surgeries (post-operative), it is more difficult to understand their pain due to the side effect of medications and the caring system (i.e. intubated, masked face, covered body with blanket, etc.). In a clinical environment, usually, bedside nurses routinely observe the neonate and measure the pain status following any standard clinical pain scale. But current …

Machine learning (ML) has been extensively employed for strategy optimization, decision making, data classification, etc. While ML shows great triumph in its application field, the increasing complexity of the learning models introduces neoteric challenges to the ML system designs. On the one hand, the applications of ML on resource-restricted terminals, like mobile computing and IoT devices, are prevented by the high computational complexity and memory requirement. On the other hand, the massive parameter quantity for the modern ML models appends extra demands on the system's I/O speed and memory size. This dissertation investigates feasible solutions for those challenges with software-hardware …

Happiness And Policy Implications: A Sociological View, Sarah M. Kahl
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
The World Happiness Report is released every year, ranking each country by who is “happier” and explaining the variables and data they have used. This project attempts to build from that base and create a machine learning algorithm that can predict if a country will be in a “happy” or “could be happier” category. Findings show that taking a broader scope of variables can better help predict happiness. Policy implications are discussed in using both big data and considering social indicators to make better and lasting policies.

A Study Of Grammar-Based Fuzzing Approaches, Ziwei Wu
Master's Theses
Fuzzing is the process of finding security vulnerabilities in code by creating inputs that will activate the exploits. Grammar-based fuzzing uses a grammar, which represents the syntax of all inputs a target program will accept, allowing the fuzzer to create well-formed complex inputs. This thesis conducts an in-depth study on two blackbox grammar-based fuzzing methods, GLADE and Learn&Fuzz, on their performance and usability to the average user. The blackbox fuzzer Radamsa was also used to compare fuzzing effectiveness. From our results in fuzzing PDF objects, GLADE beats both Radamsa and Learn&Fuzz in terms of coverage and pass rate. XML inputs …

Solar farms like the Gold Tree Solar Farm at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo have difficulty delivering a consistent level of power output. Cloudy days can trigger a significant drop in the utility of a farm’s solar panels, and an unexpected loss of power from the farm could potentially unbalance the electrical grid. Being able to predict these power output drops in advance could provide valuable time to prepare a grid and keep it stable. Furthermore, with modern data analysis methods such as machine learning, these predictions are becoming more and more accurate – given a sufficient data set. The …

Improving Relation Extraction From Unstructured Genealogical Texts Using Fine-Tuned Transformers, Carloangello Parrolivelli
Master's Theses
Though exploring one’s family lineage through genealogical family trees can be insightful to developing one’s identity, this knowledge is typically held behind closed doors by private companies or require expensive technologies, such as DNA testing, to uncover. With the ever-booming explosion of data on the world wide web, many unstructured text documents, both old and new, are being discovered, written, and processed which contain rich genealogical information. With access to this immense amount of data, however, entails a costly process whereby people, typically volunteers, have to read large amounts of text to find relationships between people. This delays having genealogical …
A Quantitative Comparison Of Algorithmic And Machine Learning Network Flow Throughput Prediction, Cayden Wagner
A Quantitative Comparison Of Algorithmic And Machine Learning Network Flow Throughput Prediction, Cayden Wagner
All Theses
Applications ranging from video meetings, live streaming, video games, autonomous vehicle operations, and algorithmic trading heavily rely on low latency communication to operate optimally. A solution to fully support this growing demand for low latency is called dual-queue active queue management (AQM). Dual-queue AQM's functionality is reduced without network traffic throughput prediction.
Perhaps due to the current popularity of machine learning, there is a trend to adopt machine learning models over traditional algorithmic throughput prediction approaches without empirical support. This study tested the effectiveness of machine learning as compared to time series forecasting algorithms in predicting per-flow network traffic throughput …

Advances in Recurrent Neural Network (RNN) techniques have caused an explosion of problems posed that revolve around the mass analysis and generation of sequential data, including symbolic music. Building off the work of Nathaniel Patterson’s Musical Autocomplete: An LSTM Approach, we extend this problem of continuing a composition by examining the creative impact that injecting latent-space encoded image data, specifically fine art from the WikiArt Dataset, has on the musical output of RNN architectures designed for autocomplete. For comparison purposes with Patterson, we will also be using a corpus of Erik Satie’s piano music for training, validation, and testing.

Machine Learning (ML) is vastly improving the world, from computer vision to fully self-driving cars, we are now able accomplish objectives that were thought to only be dreams. In order to train ML models accurately, they require mountains of information to work with, but sometimes it becomes impossible to collect the data needed, so we turn to data augmentation. In this project we use a conditional variational auto encoder to supplement the original video electrochemiluminescence biosensor dataset, in order to increase the accuracy of a future classification model. In other words, using a cVAE we will create unique realistic videos …
Exploring The Efficiency Of Neural Architecture Search (Nas) Modules, Joshua Dulcich
Exploring The Efficiency Of Neural Architecture Search (Nas) Modules, Joshua Dulcich
Honors Theses
Machine learning is obscure and expensive to develop. Neural architecture search (NAS) algorithms automate this process by learning to create premier ML networks, minimizing the bias and necessity of human experts. From this recently emerging field, most research has focused on optimizing a promisingly unique combination of NAS’s three segments. Despite regularly acquiring state of the art results, this practice sacrifices computing time and resources for slight increases in accuracy; this also obstructs performance comparison across papers. To resolve this issue, we use NASLib’s modular library to test the efficiency per module in a unique subset of combinations. Each NAS …
Quadratic Neural Network Architecture As Evaluated Relative To Conventional Neural Network Architecture, Reid Taylor
Quadratic Neural Network Architecture As Evaluated Relative To Conventional Neural Network Architecture, Reid Taylor
Senior Theses
Current work in the field of deep learning and neural networks revolves around several variations of the same mathematical model for associative learning. These variations, while significant and exceptionally applicable in the real world, fail to push the limits of modern computational prowess. This research does just that: by leveraging high order tensors in place of 2nd order tensors, quadratic neural networks can be developed and can allow for substantially more complex machine learning models which allow for self-interactions of collected and analyzed data. This research shows the theorization and development of mathematical model necessary for such an idea to …

Autonomous Rock Segmentation From Lidar Point Clouds Using Machine Learning Approaches, Lauren E. Flanagan
Autonomous Rock Segmentation From Lidar Point Clouds Using Machine Learning Approaches, Lauren E. Flanagan
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
Rover navigation on planetary surfaces currently uses a method called blind drive which requires a navigation goal as input from operators on Earth and uses camera images to autonomously detect obstacles. Images can be affected by lighting conditions, are not highly accurate from far distances, and will not work in the dark; these factors negatively impact the autonomous capabilities of rovers. By improving a rover's ability to autonomously detect obstacles, the capabilities of rovers in future missions would improve; for example, enabling exploration of permanently shadowed regions, and allowing faster driving speeds and farther travel distances. This thesis demonstrates how …

Hybridization Of Biologically Inspired Algorithms For Discrete Optimisation Problems, Elihu Essian-Thompson
Dissertations
In the field of Optimization Algorithms, despite the popularity of hybrid designs, not enough consideration has been given to hybridization strategies. This paper aims to raise awareness of the benefits that such a study can bring. It does this by conducting a systematic review of popular algorithms used for optimization, within the context of Combinatorial Optimization Problems. Then, a comparative analysis is performed between Hybrid and Base versions of the algorithms to demonstrate an increase in optimization performance when hybridization is employed.

Machine Learning (Ml) - Assisted Tools For Enhancing Security And Privacy Of Edge Devices, Santosh Kumar Nukavarapu
Theses and Dissertations
The rapid growth of edge-based IoT devices, their use cases, and autonomous communication has created new challenges with privacy and security. Side-channel attacks are one of the examples of security and privacy vulnerabilities that can cause inference at Internet-Service Provider (ISP) and local Wi-Fi networks. Such an attack would leak user’s sensitive information such as home occupancy, medical activity, and daily routines. Another example is that these devices have weak authentication and low encryption standards, making them an easy target for malware-based attacks such as denial of service or launching other network attacks using these infected devices. This thesis dissertation …
