Agricultural productivity in strawberry cultivation was enhanced through the application of machine learning in this study. Traditional methods for detecting diseases and assessing ripeness in strawberries were identified as labor-intensive and error-prone, which limited farming efficiency and reduced crop yields. To address these challenges, it was hypothesized that advanced machine learning models incorporating attention mechanisms could significantly improve these tasks. The objective was to evaluate the effectiveness of various models by optimizing them for specific agricultural applications. Two datasets of strawberry images were augmented, and three pretrained models—Vision Transformer (ViT), MobileNetV2, and ResNet18—were fine-tuned. Data quality was improved through background …

This thesis presents the development and testing of Bruce, a low-cost hybrid Remote Operated Vehicle (ROV) / Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV) system for the optical survey of marine archaeological sites, as well as a novel sonar image augmentation strategy for semantic segmentation of shipwrecks. This approach takes side-scan sonar and bathymetry data collected using an EdgeTech 2205 AUV sensor integrated with an Harris Iver3, and generates augmented image data to be used for the semantic segmentation of shipwrecks. Coral reefs, supporting 25% of marine biodiversity, confront challenges from local and global impacts like overfishing, runoff, acidification, and warming. Crustose Coralline Algae (CCA), pivotal for reef structure and coral settlement, are underrepresented in research. Current methods like Coral Point Count with Excel Extensions (CPCe) have limitations, relying on image quality and being time-consuming. The United States Air Force is researching vision-based AAR and different methods for this actualization. Previous work has established a computer vision based pipeline with ICP. This work focuses on how ICP can become resilient to boom occlusion by minimizing errors and discusses the limitations of ICP in the face of occlusions. Specifically, we look at various filtering techniques to remove non-salient points. To register point clouds while maintaining real time interactivity, this work also presents a method for downsampling high resolution camera calibrations to preserve real-time processing and significantly decrease the vision pipeline latency.

Upper-limb prosthetics are typically driven exclusively by biological signals, mainly electromyography (EMG), where electrodes are placed on the residual part of an amputated limb. In this approach, amputees must control each arm joint iteratively, in a proportional manner. Research has shown that sequential control of prosthetics usually imposes a cognitive burden on amputees, leading to high abandonment rates. Currently, Unmanned Aerial Vehicles are unsafe to refuel in-flight due to the communication latency between the UAVs ground operator and the UAV. Providing UAVs with an in-flight refueling capability would improve their functionality by extending their flight duration and increasing their flight payload. Our solution to this problem is Automated Aerial Refueling (AAR) using stereo vision from stereo electro-optical and infrared cameras on a refueling tanker. We explore low-cost solutions for efficiently improving the 3D pose estimation problem of a single camera moving in an unfamiliar environment. The visual odometry (VO) task -- as it is called when using computer vision to estimate egomotion -- is of particular interest to mobile robots as well as humans with visual impairments. The purpose of our project is to allow players to hit baseballs on a baseball field and not have to worry about picking them up. By combining our knowledge of software and hardware, we developed the first design of a robot that “shags” baseballs. Our endeavor was only partially successful. In this paper, we compare the results of ResNet image classification with the results of Google Image search. We created a collection of 1,000 images by performing ten Google Image searches with a variety of search terms. We classified each of these images using ResNet and inspected the results. The ResNet classifier predicted the category that matched the search term of the image 77.5% of the time. In our best case, with the search term “forklift”, the classifier categorized 92 of the 100 images as forklifts.
