Leveraging Lexical Link Analysis (Lla) To Discover New Knowledge, Ying Zhao, Douglas J. Mackinnon, Shelley P. Gallup, Joseph L. Billingsley
Military Cyber Affairs
Lexical Link Analysis (LLA) is a form of text mining in which word meanings represented in lexical terms (e.g., word pairs) are treated as if they are in a community of a word network. LLA can provide automated awareness for analyzing text data and reveal previously unknown, data-driven themed connections. We applied LLA to develop authentic archetypes and conversely determine potential imposters of that same archetype. We use publically available social media data to develop a cyber professional as an example. This paper reports the development of the algorithm, the collection and labeling of data, as well as the results …
Large Scale Brownian Dynamics Simulation Of Dilute And Semidilute Polymeric Solutions, Amir Saadat
Large Scale Brownian Dynamics Simulation Of Dilute And Semidilute Polymeric Solutions, Amir Saadat
Doctoral Dissertations
Excluded Volume (EV) and Hydrodynamic Interactions (HI) play a central role in static and dynamic properties of macromolecules in solution under equilibrium and nonequilibrium settings. The computational cost of incorporating HI in mesoscale Brownian dynamics (BD) simulations, particularly in the semidilute regime has motivated significant research aimed at development of high-fidelity and efficient techniques.
In this study, I have developed several algorithms for the mesoscale bead-spring representation of a macromolecular solution in dilute and semidilute regimes. The Krylov subspace method enables fast calculation of single chain dynamics with simulation time scaling of O(Nb2) [order N …

Microstructural Analysis Of Thermoelastic Response, Nonlinear Creep, And Pervasive Cracking In Heterogeneous Materials, Alden C. Cook
Microstructural Analysis Of Thermoelastic Response, Nonlinear Creep, And Pervasive Cracking In Heterogeneous Materials, Alden C. Cook
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation is concerned with the development of robust numerical solution procedures for the generalized micromechanical analysis of linear and nonlinear constitutive behavior in heterogeneous materials. Although the methods developed are applicable in many engineering, geological, and materials science fields, three main areas are explored in this work. First, a numerical methodology is presented for the thermomechanical analysis of heterogeneous materials with a special focus on real polycrystalline microstructures obtained using electron backscatter diffraction techniques. Asymptotic expansion homogenization and finite element analysis are employed for micromechanical analysis of polycrystalline materials. Effective thermoelastic properties of polycrystalline materials are determined and compared …
Coupled Fluid-Structure Interaction Modeling Of A Parafoil, Brandon Burnett
Coupled Fluid-Structure Interaction Modeling Of A Parafoil, Brandon Burnett
Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses
In the summer of 2014, Performance Designs, Inc. contacted Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University’s Eagle Flight Research Center to lead an investigation on square parachute design and optimization using modern computational methods to reduce costs in experimental testing. This thesis investigates the foundation for using an implicit fluid-structure interaction computational model to tackle the challenges of modeling a highly-flexible, porous fabric for design optimization of a parafoil parachute’s transient performance. Canopy deformations of a single-cell square parafoil using a fluid-structure interaction (FSI) model with nonlinear material modeling is compared to an experimental setup of matching geometry. The results of this thesis yielded …

Characterization Of Molecular Communication Based On Cell Metabolism Through Mutual Information And Flux Balance Analysis, Zahmeeth Sayed Sakkaff
Department of Computer Science and Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Synthetic biology is providing novel tools to engineer cells and access the basis of their molecular information processing, including their communication channels based on chemical reactions and molecule exchange. Molecular communication is a discipline in communication engineering that studies these types of communications and ways to exploit them for novel purposes, such as the development of ubiquitous and heterogeneous communication networks to interconnect biological cells with nano and biotechnology-enabled devices, i.e., the Internet of Bio-Nano Things. One major problem in realizing these goals stands in the development of reliable techniques to control the engineered cells and their behavior from the …

Automatic Segmentation Of Coronal Holes In Solar Images And Solar Prediction Map Classification, Venkatesh Jatla
Automatic Segmentation Of Coronal Holes In Solar Images And Solar Prediction Map Classification, Venkatesh Jatla
Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs
Solar image analysis relies on the detection of coronal holes for predicting disruptions to earth’s magnetic field. The coronal holes act as sources of solar wind that can reach the earth. Thus, coronal holes are used in physical models for predicting the evolution of solar wind and its potential for interfering with the earth’s magnetic field. Due to inherent uncertainties in the physical models, there is a need for a classification system that can be used to select the physical models that best match the observed coronal holes. The physical model classification problem is decomposed into three subproblems. First, the …
Finite Element Simulation Of Pzt-Aided Interrogation Of Composite Laminates Exhibiting Damage, Amany Micheal, Yehia Bahei-El-Din
Finite Element Simulation Of Pzt-Aided Interrogation Of Composite Laminates Exhibiting Damage, Amany Micheal, Yehia Bahei-El-Din
Centre for Advanced Materials
Piezoelectricity has proved effective in capturing changes in structures caused by various damage mechanisms. In one approach, piezoelectric wafer active sensors (PWAS) are mounted on the surface of the host structure and utilized as both actuators and sensors to interrogate the structure and monitor its health. This is achieved by subjecting the PWAS to a transient electric pulse and reading the resulting voltage. Changes in the stiffness of the substrate due to structural damage affect the response of the PWAS, which could be correlated to integrity of the structure. Applying this technique to fibrous composite laminates encounters particular challenges due …
Eulerian Cfd Modeling Of Multiphase Internal Injector Flow And External Sprays, Eli T. Baldwin
Eulerian Cfd Modeling Of Multiphase Internal Injector Flow And External Sprays, Eli T. Baldwin
Doctoral Dissertations
The improvement of combustion systems which use sprays to atomize liquid fuel requires an understanding of that atomization process. Although the secondary break up mechanisms for the far-field of an atomizing spray have been thoroughly studied and well understood for some time, understanding the internal nozzle flow and primary atomization on which the far-field spray depends has proven to be more of a challenge. Flow through fuel injector nozzles can be highly complex and heavily influenced by factors such as turbulence, needle motion, nozzle imperfections, nozzle asymmetry, and phase change. All of this occurs within metallic injectors, making experimental characterization …

Recent Progress In Wide-Area Surveillance: Protecting Our Pipeline Infrastructure, Vijayan K. Asari, Paheding Sidike, Chen Cui, Varun Santhaseelan
Vijayan K. Asari
The pipeline industry has millions of miles of pipes buried along the length and breadth of the country. Since none of the areas through which pipelines run are to be used for other activities, it needs to be monitored so as to know whether the right-of-way (RoW) of the pipeline is encroached upon at any point in time. Rapid advances made in the area of sensor technology have enabled the use of high end video acquisition systems to monitor the RoW of pipelines. The images captured by aerial data acquisition systems are affected by a host of factors that include …
Automatic Fracture Orientation Extraction From Sfm Point Clouds, Jon Kissi
Automatic Fracture Orientation Extraction From Sfm Point Clouds, Jon Kissi
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
Geology seeks to understand the history of the Earth and its surface processes through charac- terisation of surface formations and rock units. Chief among the geologists’ tools are rock unit orientation measurements, such as Strike, Dip and Dip Direction. These allow an understanding of both surface and sub-structure on both the local and macro scale.
Although the way these techniques can be used to characterise geology are well understood, the need to collect these measurements by hand adds time and expense to the work of the geologist, precludes spontaneity in field work, and coverage is limited to where the geologist …

Multiscale Wind Modelling For Sustainability And Resilience, Djordje Romanic
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
The research presented herein is a mix of meteorological and wind engineering disciplines. In many cases, there is a gap between these two fields and this thesis is an attempt to bridge that gap through multiscale wind modelling approaches. Data and methods used in this study cover a multitude of spatial and temporal scales. Applications are in the fields of sustainability and resilience. This relationship between multiscale wind modelling and sustainability and resilience is investigated examining several case studies of three different developments: urban, rural and coastal.
An urban wind modelling methodology is proposed and applied for a specific development …

Modelling Of Coal-Biomass Blends Gasification And Power Plant Revamp Alternatives In Egypt’S Natural Gas Sector, Dalia A. Ali Eng, Mamdouh A. Gadalla Prof., Omar Y. Abdelaziz, Fatma H. Ashour Prof.
Chemical Engineering
Recently, there has been a growing research interest in the co-gasification of biomass with coal to produce syngas and electricity in a sustainable manner. Co-gasification technology do not only decrease potentially the exploitation of a significant amount of conventional coal resources, and thus lower greenhouse gases (GHG) emissions, but also boost the overall gasification process efficiency. In the present work, a rigorous simulation model of an entrained flow gasifier is developed using the Aspen Plus® software environment. The proposed simulation model is tested for an American coal and the model validation is performed in good agreement with practical data. The …
Laff-O-Tron: Laugh Prediction In Ted Talks, Andrew D. Acosta
Laff-O-Tron: Laugh Prediction In Ted Talks, Andrew D. Acosta
Master's Theses
Did you hear where the thesis found its ancestors? They were in the "parent-thesis"! This joke, whether you laughed at it or not, contains a fascinating and mysterious quality: humor. Humor is something so incredibly human that if you squint, the two words can even look the same. As such, humor is not often considered something that computers can understand. But, that doesn't mean we won't try to teach it to them.
In this thesis, we propose the system Laff-O-Tron to attempt to predict when the audience of a public speech would laugh by looking only at the text of …

Gpu-Arraysort: A Parallel, In-Place Algorithm For Sorting Large Number Of Arrays, Muaaz Awan, Fahad Saeed
Parallel Computing and Data Science Lab Technical Reports
Modern day analytics deals with big datasets from diverse fields. For many application the data is in the form of an array which consists of large number of smaller arrays. Existing techniques focus on sorting a single large array and cannot be used for sorting large number of smaller arrays in an efficient manner. Currently no such algorithm is available which can sort such large number of arrays utilizing the massively parallel architecture of GPU devices. In this paper we present a highly scalable parallel algorithm, called GPU-ArraySort, for sorting large number of arrays using a GPU. Our algorithm performs …

Multi-Objective Optimization Under Uncertainty Using The Hyper-Volume Expected Improvement, Martin Figura, Piyush Pandita, Rohit K. Tripathy, Ilias Bilionis
The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium
The design of real engineering systems requires the optimization of multiple quantities of interest. In the electric motor design, one wants to maximize the average torque and minimize the torque variation. A study has shown that these attributes vary for different geometries of the rotor teeth. However, simulations of a large number of designs cannot be performed due to their high cost. In many problems, design optimization of multi-objective functions is a very challenging task due to the difficulty to evaluate the expectation of the objectives. Current multi-objective optimization (MOO) techniques, e.g., evolutionary algorithms cannot solve such problems because they …

Design Optimization Of A Stochastic Multi-Objective Problem: Gaussian Process Regressions For Objective Surrogates, Juan Sebastian Martinez, Piyush Pandita, Rohit K. Tripathy, Ilias Bilionis
The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium
Multi-objective optimization (MOO) problems arise frequently in science and engineering situations. In an optimization problem, we want to find the set of input parameters that generate the set of optimal outputs, mathematically known as the Pareto frontier (PF). Solving the MOO problem is a challenge since expensive experiments can be performed only a constrained number of times and there is a limited set of data to work with, e.g. a roll-to-roll microwave plasma chemical vapor deposition (MPCVD) reactor for manufacturing high quality graphene. State-of-the-art techniques, e.g. evolutionary algorithms; particle swarm optimization, require a large amount of observations and do not …
