A Study On Early Age Properties Of Concrete For Precast And 3d Printing, Debalina Ghosh Dec 2022

A Study On Early Age Properties Of Concrete For Precast And 3d Printing, Debalina Ghosh

Doctoral Dissertations

Concrete is the second-most consumed material, leading the global Portland cement production of 4.1 billion tons in 2020 and 5-8% of global Carbon dioxide (CO2) emission annually. As with any other material and practice, the construction industry is also ever-changing to meet market demand, evolving technology, and resource limitation. In the case of concrete construction, one of the main concerns is the lack of automation. In the last few decades, some new construction methods have risen to address this concern. Some of these economic and successful practices are precast construction, self-compacting concrete (SCC), and 3D printing of concrete(3DPC). …

Effects Of Fiber Orientation On The Coefficient Of Thermal Expansion Of Fiber-Filled Polymer Systems In Large Format Polymer Extrusion-Based Additive Manufacturing, José Luis Colón Quintana, Lucinda Slattery, Jon Pinkham, Joanna Keaton, Roberto A. Lopez-Anido, Keith Sharp Apr 2022

Lopez-Anido, Keith Sharp

Civil Engineering Faculty Scholarship

Large format polymer extrusion-based additive manufacturing has been studied recently due to its capacity for high throughput, customizable bead size and geometry, and ability to manufacture large parts. Samples from three fiber-filled amorphous thermoplastic materials 3D printed using a Masterprint 3X machine from Ingersoll Machine Tools were studied, along with their neat counterparts. Characterization techniques included thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and thermo-mechanical analysis (TMA). TGA results showed that the fillers decreased the degradation temperature for most of the materials investigated, with a 30°C decrease for polycarbonate (PC) and a 12°C decrease for polyethylene terephthalate glycol (PETG). For …

Development Of The Uhpc Mix For 3d Printing, Buse Ilayda Oz Mar 2022

Development Of The Uhpc Mix For 3d Printing, Buse Ilayda Oz

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis utilizes the development of Ultra-High-Performance Concrete mix design for 3-Dimensional (3D) Printing purposes. 3D concrete printing offers many advantages such as the improvements in safety, quality, and productivity. Moreover, it holds a great advantage for the construction of structural elements that are difficult to construct by conventional methods. These advantages carry a huge potential for solving the aforementioned challenges.

Seven UHPC mixes have been designed and analyzed using various test setups for comparison purposes. Extrudability, flowability, buildability, and open time were measured using the fresh properties of the UHPC mixes. Mechanical properties were measured using compression test setups. …

Critical Evaluation Of Construction Industry-Related Additive Manufacturing Research: A Scientometric Analysis, Tyler J. Brunjes Mar 2022

Critical Evaluation Of Construction Industry-Related Additive Manufacturing Research: A Scientometric Analysis, Tyler J. Brunjes

Theses and Dissertations

Review of construction-related AM literature is used to identify the advantages, challenges, and current trends of the research. Using a scientometric analysis of 522 bibliographic records, this research systematically analyzed construction related AM research to determine the key research areas and trends. Results showed that starting in 2015, the field has been growing at an exponential rate. Recent AM research focused on materials and reinforcement topics, which matched the most notable challenges of AM, which are material rheology, reinforcement, and lacking construction standards. This study provides an insight into AM research and identifies areas requiring more innovation before its commercial …

Numerical Modeling And Experimental Investigation Of Effective Elastic Properties Of The 3d Printed Gyroid Infill, Philip Bean, Roberto A. Lopez-Anido, Senthil Vel Feb 2022

Numerical Modeling And Experimental Investigation Of Effective Elastic Properties Of The 3d Printed Gyroid Infill, Philip Bean, Roberto A. Lopez-Anido, Senthil Vel

Civil Engineering Faculty Scholarship

A numerical homogenization approach is presented for the effective elastic moduli of 3D printed cellular infills. A representative volume element of the infill geometry is discretized using either shell or solid elements and analyzed using the finite element method. The elastic moduli of the bulk cellular material are obtained through longitudinal and shear deformations of a representative volume element under periodic boundary conditions. The method is used to analyze the elastic behavior of gyroid infills for varying infill densities. The approach is validated by comparing the Young’s modulus and Poisson’s ratio with those obtained from compression experiments. Results indicate that …
