In December 2019, two California Polytechnic State University (Cal Poly) students built a house in Chiang Mai, Thailand, with the nonprofit organization, Global Village. This experience not only embodied the Cal Poly motto of Learn by Doing, but went further, that the students Learned by Giving. Following the impactful, hands on service learning experience, the students dedicated their senior project to aiding future students in finding similar endeavors to do, learn, and give. In the winter of 2019, students from the Cal Poly Construction Management Department traveled to Chiang Mai, Thailand to complete a home build with Habitat for Humanity Global Village. This trip sparked their interest in promoting service based learning for other students looking for similar opportunities to participate in not-for-profit projects. In order to provide other students with information about not-for-profit construction, a website was created to highlight these organizations and the available opportunities to volunteer. In Winter of 2019, members of the Associated General Contractors, Student Chapter at Cal Poly traveled to Selena, Belize to complete soccer bleachers at the local soccer field. This trip offered an excellent case study into feasibility and benefits of new construction technology on all project sizes and in different countries. SketchUp was used in multiple phases of this project including design, estimating and the creation of as-builts. Procore offers an array of useful features including the scheduling, daily logs and meetings that were used on this project.
