Multiple Radar Data Merging In Hydro-Nexrad, Witold F. Krajewski, Bong Chul Seo, Anton Kruger, Piotr Domaszczynski, Gabriele Villarini, James A. Smith

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The Hydro-NEXRAD merging algorithms include two options: (1) data-based merging; and (2) product-based merging. Data-based merging algorithm takes volume scan reflectivity data from all radars involved through preprocessing algorithm that performs volume data quality control, interpolates data to synchronize temporal scale between individual radars, and finally combines data onto a common geographic grid. Reflectivity values for a given location are assigned by a weighting function with respect to the distance from the radar. This single reflectivity field is then converted to rainfall amounts using a user-requested standard approach. In product-based merging algorithm reflectivity data from multiple radars are all converted …

Hydro-NEXRAD is a prototype system that allows hydrologists to obtain user-specified rainfall data for their research. These data are based on observations collected by the national network of WSR-88D radars, known as NEXRAD. Users interact with Hydro-NEXRAD through a web-based interface that has map-based components for spatial navigation, calendar- and time series plot components for temporal navigation and a menu-based component for selection of processing options. Through the interface, users browse the Hydro-NEXRAD metadata and select data of interest. As the system is approaching the point of being fully operational, the authors and a group of test users have evaluated …

Strain Sensitive Coax Cable Sensors For Monitoring Structures, Genda Chen, James L. Drewniak, Huimin Mu, David Pommerenke

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The invention provides increased structural monitoring systems that have sensitive continuous coaxial cable sensors. A preferred embodiment sensor cable of the invention includes an inner conductor, a dielectric jacket, and an outer conductor that is configured to passively deform responsively to strain in an associated structure. The deformation can be aided by the physical structure of the dielectric jacket, the outer conductor, or a combination of both. The deformation translates strain into a measurable change in a reflection coefficient associated with the outer conductor.

Section Properties For Cellular Decks Subjected To Negative Bending, Gregory L. Snow, W. Samuel Easterling Sep 2008

Section Properties For Cellular Decks Subjected To Negative Bending, Gregory L. Snow, W. Samuel Easterling

CCFSS Library (1939 - present)

Cellular decks are formed by attaching cold-formed “hat-shaped” deck sections on top of cold-formed steel sheets. The attachment is typically made using resistance spot welds spaced at a specific interval. The void left underneath the deck flutes and above the steel sheet provides a convenient means for the distribution of wiring and data cables throughout building systems. The section properties of cellular decks subjected to positive bending can be determined using the provisions of Chapter B of the 2001 AISI Specification (AISI, 2001). However, the provisions of Chapter B do not apply to cellular decks subjected to negative bending unless …

Strength Of Arc-Spot Welds Made In Single And Multiple Steel Sheets, Gregory L. Snow, W. Samuel Easterling

CCFSS Library (1939 - present)

The objective of this research was to establish a relationship between arc spot weld shear strength and the arc time used to form the weld. Lap shear tests were performed on both 3/4 in. and 5/8 in. nominal diameter welds. Each weld was formed in one-, two-, or four-layers of sheet steel ranging from 22 gauge (0.028 in.) to 16 gauge (.057 in.). Three distinct time series were tested for each unique weld size, thickness of sheet steel and layer configuration. The first of these series were the full-time welds. The two remaining series, 2/3-time and 1/3-time welds, had arc …

Determination Of Creep Compliance And Tensile Strength Of Hot-Mix Asphalt For Wearing Courses In Missouri, David Newton Richardson, S. M. Lusher Apr 2008

Determination Of Creep Compliance And Tensile Strength Of Hot-Mix Asphalt For Wearing Courses In Missouri, David Newton Richardson, S. M. Lusher

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Creep compliance and indirect tensile (IDT) strength of hot-mix asphalt (HMA) are the two primary inputs to the low-temperature or thermal cracking module in the new Mechanistic-Empirical Pavement Design Guide (M-E PDG) software. Creep compliance is defined as time-dependent strain per unit stress, while IDT strength is best defined as HMA strength when subjected to tension. AASHTO T 322 test protocol was used as reference for this work. However in preparation for the laboratory work performed at the Missouri University of Science and Technology many experts were consulted as to how IDT creep/strength testing and calculations are actually being performed. …

A Fast Adaptive Wavelet Scheme In Rbf Collocation For Nearly Singular Potential Pdes, Nicolas Ali Libre, Arezoo Emdadi, Edward J. Kansa, Mohammad Shekarchi, Mohammad Rahimian Mar 2008

A Fast Adaptive Wavelet Scheme In Rbf Collocation For Nearly Singular Potential Pdes, Nicolas Ali Libre, Arezoo Emdadi, Edward J. Kansa, Mohammad Shekarchi, Mohammad Rahimian

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

We present a wavelet based adaptive scheme and investigate the efficiency of this scheme for solving nearly singular potential PDEs. Multiresolution wavelet analysis (MRWA) provides a firm mathematical foundation by projecting the solution of PDE onto a nested sequence of approximation spaces. The wavelet coefficients then were used as an estimation of the sensible regions for node adaptation. The proposed adaptation scheme requires negligible calculation time due to the existence of the fast DiscreteWavelet Transform (DWT). Certain aspects of the proposed adaptive scheme are discussed through numerical examples. It has been shown that the proposed adaptive scheme can detect the …

Stable Pde Solution Methods For Large Multiquadric Shape Parameters, Nicolas Ali Libre, Arezoo Emdadi, Edward J. Kansa, Mohammad Rahimian, Mohammad Shekarchi Jan 2008

Stable Pde Solution Methods For Large Multiquadric Shape Parameters, Nicolas Ali Libre, Arezoo Emdadi, Edward J. Kansa, Mohammad Rahimian, Mohammad Shekarchi

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

We present a new method based upon the paper of Volokh and Vilney (2000) that produces highly accurate and stable solutions to very ill-conditioned multiquadric (MQ) radial basis function (RBF) asymmetric collocation methods for partial differential equations (PDEs). We demonstrate that the modified Volokh-Vilney algorithm that we name the improved truncated singular value decomposition (IT-SVD) produces highly accurate and stable numerical solutions for large values of a constant MQ shape parameter, c, that exceeds the critical value of c based upon Gaussian elimination.

Estimation Of Earthquake Loss Due To Bridge Damage In The St. Louis Metropolitan Area: Part I - Direct Losses, Ronaldo Luna, David J. Hoffman, William T. Lawrence

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The risk associated with earthquake hazards on highway systems is dependent on the complexity of a network and its redundancy in providing traffic flow. Earthquake loss estimation studies can provide decision makers with an appreciation of the importance of having a highway network resistant to earthquakes and information to make the network resistant to these events. The direct economic loss was estimated for a major metropolitan area, St. Louis, for a series of earthquake scenarios. The primary component of the study was damage to bridges within the highway system. The study zone covers the St. Louis metropolitan area and its …

Estimation Of Earthquake Loss Due To Bridge Damage In The St. Louis Metropolitan Area. Ii: Indirect Losses, David Lee Enke, Chakkaphan Tirasirichai, Ronaldo Luna

Engineering Management and Systems Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

An approach to estimate the indirect economic loss due to damaged bridges within the highway system from an earthquake event is presented. The indirect cost considered refers to the increased highway transportation cost only. The study zone covers the St. Louis metropolitan area and its surrounding suburban regions. An earthquake scenario centered in St. Louis, with a magnitude 7.0 is used. The direct earthquake loss was primarily damage to bridges, which causes an increase in travel time and distance within the transportation network. This information is then used as input for the indirect loss model. The indirect loss is examined …
