Electrical Design For Moringa Leaf Dryer, Jake Weiss
Electrical Design For Moringa Leaf Dryer, Jake Weiss
Construction Management
The objective of this project is to provide a methodology to the electrical scope of mechanical leaf dryers. This dryer was particularly designed for an off-grid farm in New Longoro, Ghana in which resources and materials are limited. The electrical system must be designed so that it works with motors, variable frequency drives, worm gears, and other materials that could be sourced in Ghana. The system should also draw minimal power so that remaining photovoltaic energy could be utilized on the farm. The system should be simplistic and repeatable for other farmers to utilize. By using both a numerical analysis …
Proposal For A New Construction Management Emerging Trends Elective Course: Principles Of Solar Construction, Nicholas J. Gairaud
Proposal For A New Construction Management Emerging Trends Elective Course: Principles Of Solar Construction, Nicholas J. Gairaud
Construction Management
California Polytechnic State University (Cal Poly) prides itself on its learn by doing motto which encourages students to participate in hands-on projects and choose elective courses about topics they are interested in. This project is an outline for an Emerging Trends elective course that aims to fill the gap between what students learn in school and what they see in the field. Over the past decade, the use of on-site solar energy generated has skyrocketed in the commercial and residential sectors. The purpose of this course is to inform students about solar requirements and to lay the groundwork for students …

Construction Management
Cal Poly’s motto is, “Learn by Doing" and for Cal Poly’s NECA Chapter, this isn’t simply a motto, but a directive for proactive change. For my senior project I will be leading the Cal Poly NECA chapter in the design, pre- fabrication and construction of a 5-7kw solar array, community center, ice production room and technology room in the remote fishing village of Agbokpa, Ghana. The solar array will power multiple industrial DC freezers, high efficiency LED lighting and charging stations while additionally powering water filtration and irrigation systems. Like many other fishing villages around the world, Agbokpa has no …
Viability Of Solar Power On Jobsites, Braden J. Levalley
Viability Of Solar Power On Jobsites, Braden J. Levalley
Construction Management
The use of solar energy has slowly been on the rise over the past few decades, the full potential of solar energy has not been realized in the realm of construction. Solar power in construction has been slow to catch on, as many of the upfront costs associated with solar power has created a feeling that investing in such systems will ultimately not be worth the investment. This paper attempts to address the issues of upfront costs, the willingness for contractors to invest in renewable energy both now and in the future, and will also identify possible uses for solar …
Student Led Service-Learning Initiative: Installation Of Photovoltaic Water-Pump Systems In The Ecuador Amazon Rainforest, Kelly M. Williams
Student Led Service-Learning Initiative: Installation Of Photovoltaic Water-Pump Systems In The Ecuador Amazon Rainforest, Kelly M. Williams
Construction Management
The National Electrical Contractors Association (NECA) student chapter at California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo, California was selected by an association called ELECTRI International to participate in their Student Community Service Initiative program. The goal of the program is to “Encourage construction management and electrical engineering students to take an active role in improving access to electricity in developing communities” (“Student Passport Program”). This paper summarizes the findings of a student-led project made possible by ELECTRI International’s program. The project included coordinating, funding, and executing a project to facilitate the installation of photovoltaic water pump systems to indigenous …

This community medical clinic will be the first of its kind in the rural town of Villa Tapia, Dominican Republic It is Phase II of a five-phase master plan drafted by religious organization Mission Twenty-Five35, founded by the Romano family The team consists of Cal Poly undergraduate students: Griffin Chierici (Architecture), Erica Croft and Tommy Sidebottom (Architectural Engineering), and Sarah De Los Reyes (Construction Management), backed by the guidance and support of non-profit organization Journeyman International and A/E firm Smith Group JJR The task was to design a clinic that would serve as a pediatric and urgent care center but …
Building A Solar Farm On A Rolling Landscape: A Case Study, Jakob Riley Schork
Building A Solar Farm On A Rolling Landscape: A Case Study, Jakob Riley Schork
Construction Management
The well-being of the environment in the United States is becoming dependent on a change from unreliable and scarce resources such as coal as a means to generate electricity to a more eco-friendly and abundant source. Solar farms provide the opportunity to generate electricity with no effect on global warming, no environmentally hazardous emissions, and are not affected by the fluctuating costs of fuel. One construction company in particular has noticed this as not only a terrific opportunity to improve the nations’ environmental footprint, but also as a tremendous business opportunity; Swinerton. Swinerton recently developed a renewable energy division that …

Construction Management
The use of photovoltaic panels in construction is rapidly growing all around the world. This paper summarizes the findings of a student-based project in Belize that was installed December 2016. The San Pedro Roman Catholic Primary School is the largest school on the island of Ambergris Caye, Belize with over 700 students in 22 classrooms ranging from Kindergarten to 8th grade. Although the school has power supplied from the local electrical utility, power outages occur frequently and the cost of electricity is considerable.
The project had several issues related to preparing the design, acquiring the materials and equipment, and developing …
Photovoltaic Installation In Ecuador And The Amazon, David Mulder
Photovoltaic Installation In Ecuador And The Amazon, David Mulder
Construction Management
The Photovoltaic Installation in Ecuador and The Amazon is part of a collaborative effort between two major construction clubs at Cal Poly: NECA and MCAA. Four students, two from each club, traveled with two faculty to install photovoltaics for two different communities. The first project was a solar installation to provide fresh water for the community of Santa Rosa. Project number two, was a sixteen-panel installation in Shell, Ecuador for the non-profit Reach Beyond. The main goals of each project were to provide fresh water, and achieve net zero electrical consumption.
