Reinstatement Of The Poly Canyon Caretaker Program Through The Development Of A Tiny Home Community, Leily Martin Jan 2024

Reinstatement Of The Poly Canyon Caretaker Program Through The Development Of A Tiny Home Community, Leily Martin

Construction Management

The Poly Canyon Experimental Structures Laboratory, through its Design/Build program, is unique in the educational opportunity it provides Cal Poly College of Architecture and Environmental Design (CAED) students. However, since the conclusion of the Caretaker Program in 2011, the facility’s structures have deteriorated due to vandalism, purposeful destruction, and weathering. This study examines the perspectives of CAED students, the interim CAED Dean, Kevin Dong, and Cal Poly Risk Manager, Mike Morgan, on the effectiveness in reinstating the Caretaker Program through the development of a tiny home community. Results indicated educational value in this facility, so addressing these issues must occur …

Shell House Demo, Cameron Tilmont Dec 2019

Shell House Demo, Cameron Tilmont

Construction Management

The Shell House demo was recommended by the Associate Dean of CAED as a potential senior project for students. Built decades ago it had deteriorated over time. The purpose of this project was to clean up Poly Canyon Architecture Graveyard, making it a nice, safe place to visit. This project interested the author because it was something different and was geared more towards heavy civil.

To get started, a permit had to be submitted to the CAL POLY building department. This process took longer than expected. The permit wasn’t released until an environmental impact test was conducted, resulting in asbestos …

Cal Poly San Luis Obispo Bridge House Remodel Project, Severin B. Elste Jun 2019

Cal Poly San Luis Obispo Bridge House Remodel Project, Severin B. Elste

Construction Management

The Bridge House, located in Poly Canyon, was originally constructed in 1968. Its original purpose served as a seismic activity lab for Architectural Engineering (ARCE) students. I joined a team of 4 ARCE students, making this an interdisciplinary project. There have been a few other groups who have tried to complete this project but have always fallen short. With the calculations and structural drawings provided by the ARCE students, we had a design and plan to fabricate the hand railings. We have completed 13 handrails, with four already installed on the structure by another group, that have now replaced the …

Construction Management

This senior project paper will delve into the background, setbacks and triumphs that where undergone during the course of this project based senior project- The first permanent structure in Poly Canyon in 15 years. Built in true “Learn By Doing Fashion” in the experimental, hands-on lab that some may better know as “Architecture Graveyard.” The project was one of extreme adversity, from fundraising difficulties and a condensed schedule, to unique site conditions and lack of manpower. The students involved in this project showed a strong sense of purpose and determination to see this structure through to completion.

Preconstruction Services For The Modular House, Trevor Daniel Houghton Jun 2017

Preconstruction Services For The Modular House, Trevor Daniel Houghton

Construction Management

The "Modular House", originally named for its composition of 8x8x8 foot steel framed modules, has experienced a rich history of tenants, additions, and tourism. This structure was one of the first to be erected in California Polytechnic’s Poly Canyon. After many great years as a residence and iconic structure the house was ultimately abandoned in 2010. Since then, the building and the canyon have seen increased vandalism and weathering backed by minimal maintenance, resulting in unsafe conditions for the general public. Our mission was to allow this structure to be enjoyed by the public while highlighting its initial architectural features. …

Architectural Engineering

The Modular House, located in Poly Canyon, has seen extensive damage since the last caretaker left nearly ten years ago. To prevent further damage and improve the safety and appeal of the structure, we are proposing a renovation of the existing building that removes the existing cladding and partitions. By the end of Spring Quarter 2017, the Modular House will have a guardrail system replacing the wood paneling on the walls and a new steel composite deck to replace the current flooring system. The structural steel framing system will remain as is.
