A Study On Early Age Properties Of Concrete For Precast And 3d Printing, Debalina Ghosh Dec 2022

A Study On Early Age Properties Of Concrete For Precast And 3d Printing, Debalina Ghosh

Doctoral Dissertations

Concrete is the second-most consumed material, leading the global Portland cement production of 4.1 billion tons in 2020 and 5-8% of global Carbon dioxide (CO2) emission annually. As with any other material and practice, the construction industry is also ever-changing to meet market demand, evolving technology, and resource limitation. In the case of concrete construction, one of the main concerns is the lack of automation. In the last few decades, some new construction methods have risen to address this concern. Some of these economic and successful practices are precast construction, self-compacting concrete (SCC), and 3D printing of concrete(3DPC). …

Flexural Bond Strength Of Masonry Assemblies With Lightweight Grout, Benjamin L. Hiner Dec 2022

Flexural Bond Strength Of Masonry Assemblies With Lightweight Grout, Benjamin L. Hiner

All Theses

Lightweight grout has many potential benefits in masonry construction, including minimizing mass, improving thermal performance, and potentially reducing shrinkage cracking via internal curing. However, insufficient testing of masonry assemblies with lightweight grout has been conducted to suggest appropriate design modification factors akin to the lambda factor in ACI 318-19. The objective of this paper is to study the tensile bond behavior of masonry assemblies grouted with lightweight grout and to suggest appropriate equations for predicting design capacity. A moment couple test is designed specifically for grouted masonry assemblies and has additional capacity compared to the traditional ASTM 1072 bond wrench …

Review Of Fly-Ash As A Supplementary Cementitious Material, Nikki Shaji, Niall Holmes Dr., Mark Tyrer Aug 2022

Review Of Fly-Ash As A Supplementary Cementitious Material, Nikki Shaji, Niall Holmes Dr., Mark Tyrer

Conference papers

This paper presents a review of fly-ash as a Supplementary Cementitious Material (SCM) in concrete in terms of its effects on hydration and durability. The climate change agenda has focused the cement and concrete industry on using low embodied CO2 materials and much effort has been made on incorporating industrial by-products into cement as SCMs. With worldwide cement production (circa 4 billion tonnes) currently accounting for approximately 8% of global CO2 emissions and 7% of industry energy use, the use of suitable SCMs to partially replace cement in concrete is extremely important. However, while coal-fired power stations are in the …

An Experimental Investigation Of Icephobicity And Hydrophobicity Of Concrete Surface Treated With Pavix, Hussein Hashemi Senejani Aug 2022

An Experimental Investigation Of Icephobicity And Hydrophobicity Of Concrete Surface Treated With Pavix, Hussein Hashemi Senejani

Civil Engineering Theses

High ice adhesion is a significant problem in several industries. The majority of practical issues brought on by ice adhesion are still not fully resolved, and the ice-adhesion mechanism is still poorly understood. Ice adhesion is a complex phenomenon that becomes more intricate when salt is involved, as in many marine cases. Reducing ice adhesion by generating hydrophobic surfaces might be advantageous in many applications as a passive ice removal strategy. Lowering adhesion may reduce friction, abrasion, and damage to structures in a maritime environment, as well as any surface prone to ice development. This process may also be utilized …

Finite Element Modeling Of Thermal Effect On Airport Slabs, Chuanyue Shen Jul 2022

Finite Element Modeling Of Thermal Effect On Airport Slabs, Chuanyue Shen

International Conference on Durability of Concrete Structures

A sub-ground tunnel connecting two concourses of a terminal at Chicago O’Hare International Airport suffered from water leakage. The airport engineers suspected that the problem was caused by high stresses impinging on the tunnel structure by the pavement sections above the tunnel, acting to damage joints and waterproofing membranes that should have prevented such leakage. To provide a fundamental solution to this problem while minimizing the interference with airport operation, a repair strategy needs to be determined based on a clear understanding of the root cause. A preliminary field inspection confirmed that the concrete pavement slabs moved significantly when ambient …

The Effects Of Recycled Waste On Concrete Mixture Properties, Noral Hadbawi Jul 2022

The Effects Of Recycled Waste On Concrete Mixture Properties, Noral Hadbawi

Master of Science in Civil Engineering Theses

Recent years have seen an exponential increase in plastic product consumption worldwide. Manufacturing, and individuals rely on plastics in almost every aspect, as a result, a negative impact on the environment is detected due to the large quantities and low biodegradability of plastic waste. The massive amount of plastic waste and end-of-life tires produced annually required a vast area of landfills, which became a major concern far and wide. To address these issues, an eco-friendly approach consisting of incorporating plastic and rubber waste into engineering applications, such as plastic concrete, and rubberized concrete was proposed. A primary objective of this …

Production Of Low-Cost Self-Consolidating Concrete (Scc) Using Manufactured Aggregates, Rabab Raydan, Farah Chamseddine, Ali Jahami, Oussama Baalbaki, Jamal Khatib, Adel Elkordi

BAU Journal - Science and Technology

Limitations to the sources of aggregates and the unavailability of sand is becoming a problematic issue for concrete production. A novel technology of manufactured aggregates can produce well graded round aggregates that can substitute natural aggregates while maintaining the same characteristics needed and preserving the resources. Self-Consolidating Concrete (SCC) using manufactured aggregates is assessed in this experimental work to understand the variability of workability properties and mechanical properties with the changes in w/c ratio and percentages of Coarse Aggregates and Manufactured Sand to Natural Sand in order to choose the best mixture that satisfies an adequate overall performance. Targeting compressive …

Using Metal-Organic Frameworks (Mof) To Reduce The Carbon Footprint Of Concrete, Mona Ibrahim El-Hallak

Theses

The production of concrete by the construction industry has a massive impact on the environment. The process of manufacturing its main component, cement, releases a considerable amount of anthropogenic carbon dioxide. This thesis is concerned with the production of sustainable and eco-friendly concrete that integrates metal-organic frameworks (MOF) to capture and offset the CO2 emissions emitted during the production of cement. The main objective is to synthesize a MOF capable of capturing CO2 in concrete through accelerated carbonation curing and to assess its impact on concrete performance. Different parameters were examined, including the MOF content, initial curing duration, …
